She gestured towards a different biobed, which had a built-in scanner that could encapsulate the person lying on it. “There’s really no risk involved. I can do the test, and after that, you’re still free to accept or reject treatment as you see fit. If this is what I think it is, it’ll take about a half hour to fix, and your arm will be numb for maybe another three after that. Plus you’ll have a specialised nanite embedded in your arm for an unspecified amount of time, until it detects it isn’t needed anymore. Probably a few years.”

Alex walked towards the biobed with the embedded scanner, activated it, and then turned back to Starr. “My recommendation would be to take the test, and the we’ll see where we go from there. But really, it’s completely up to you.”

“Well, I’m not going to argue with that” Simon smiled as he followed the doctor to the other biobed. “Besides, though it doesn’t happen often, if it happens at an inconvenient time that could become a problem” he joked as he sat down

Alex nodded with a smile. “All right then,” she said. “Lie down, please. I don’t need a full body scan for this, so technically I could do it with you sitting up, but then I’d have to recalibrate the scanner, and I’d rather not.”

As soon as Starr followed her instruction, Alex pushed a button. The scanner formed an arch over Starr’s body. “Would you like to see what the inside of your arm looks like?” she asked.

She’d rather ask, before confronting the Cadet with a fait accompli. Some people, she knew, preferred blissful ignorance in certain areas. Such as the intricate workings of their various bodily functions.
