Joseph walked into his office a little before Holmman and Hilo. He went over to the replicator and ordered a glass of water. This was not going to be fun, but it needed to be done. Sitting behind his desk, he picked up his clipboard and pen. Unlike most times though, this would not serve as an evaluation, but rather and interrogation. Joseph would not call it that out loud, but in his head, that was precisely what he was doing. He looked at the photo of Dr. Fayth that was sitting on his desk, he could really use a empathic person right now. He grimaced, dreading the looming conversation, but, it had to be done. And despite his feelings on the subject, Joseph felt he was the man to do it. He spent the next few moments waiting for Holmman and Hilo to arrive.

Lt. Jg. Joseph Rainns- COS

Counselor Hilo walked into Lieutenant Rainns’ office while frowning down at a PADD in his hand. Without so much as looking up, he found a chair to sit in on autopilot, settling stiffly and crossing one leg over the other. Then Hilo raised his gaze to meet the Chief of Security’s eyes. “Lieutenant,” he stated by way of greeting. Hilo was usually a jovial and good-humored man, so his distant demeanor was uncharacteristic. “I’ve reviewed Commander Holmman’s file. He’s been noted to have a penchant for risky behavior, but there’s no indication that he has violent tendencies. In fact, he was cleared of wrongdoing on the one physical altercation in his record, in which he apparently attempted to break up the fight, rather than contribute to it.”

“I can’t say I know the man well,” Hilo said with a small sigh, “but I also know that crewman death in non-combat situations is exceedingly rare, much less when another officer is in the room.” He waved the PADD. “Do you mind sending me the initial report of the scene?”

(Lt. Cmdr. Hilo, Counselor)

Joseph Rainns nodded to the counselor. As Hilo began talking he shook his head. “I have had a brief conversation with him but I also do not know him very well.” He nodded at Hilo’s request. “Of course, I’ll have it sent to you as soon as it is ready to go.”

(OOC: Happy for my character’s entrance to be played before or after the two of you finish consulting. Feel free to play it up as you want.)

Eric arrived at the Rainns’s office. He looked better than earlier that morning - a fresh uniform, combed hair… dry. His eyes were still red and his reflexes were still off (although it was unlikely anyone would specifically observe that without seeing more action from the XO). The pain in head was receding but still not gone, and the dull throb was distracting as well as still slightly painful. He had spent the walk over from his quarters trying to clear the cobwebs in his head and try to piece together what had happened and why he was with the ensign in his hot tub… but with little to show for those efforts.

“Rainns, Hilo,” he said in greeting. Still wishing to sit down - he was still more fatigued then he had realized - but making himself remain standing, he continued. “I guess we should get started.”

-Cmdr. Eric Hollman, XO

Rainns motioned for him to sit in the second seat in front of his desk. “Yes, commander, we should.” He wasn’t sure how to feel about the XO, a body was found in his hot tub, so the young COS was immediately considering him as a suspect in his mind, yet he wanted to be fair to his commanding officer. He waited for Holmman to react before he began to talk.

Lt. Jg. Joseph Rainns- COS

Eric sat down where Rainns indicated, with a slight sigh. He brushed his fingers through his hair to straighten it out. “Where would you both like to begin,” Eric asked. “The big thing for me: I actually don’t know what the two of us were doing in the hot tub. In fact, I don’t even remember arriving at my quarters last night. I don’t remember drinking, but I guess that could explain it - I certainly have the hangover from it. But suffice it to say, I have no memory of the actual drowning…”

Now that Eric revealed that, he waited for the reaction of both officers…

-Cmdr. Eric Holmman, XO

Hilo nodded, doing his absolute best to fight back the thought that popped into his mind of well of course you’d say that. “That’s a good point actually,” he said suddenly, looking at Lieutenant Rainns. “Do you have a tricorder that can read blood alcohol concentration levels? It might be a good idea to get a reading of if there are any toxins, including alcohol, in Commander Holmman’s system.”

Looking back at the executive officer, Hilo pressed the tips of his fingers together. “What is the last thing you remember, Commander? Was there a certain pretext for the reason you and the Ensign were spending time together yesterday evening?” He was obviously implying that it had been a prearranged date.

(Lt. Cmdr. Hilo, Counselor)

“Ensign Pay,” Eric asked. “I have no idea why she was in my quarters, although I guess it looks pretty obvious… Maybe I met her while I was blacked out? Although that seems a bit odd, even I have to admit. I know how that looks. But from what I can remember right now, I only learned her name when Mika said it in my quarters. Prior to last night, I don’t recall saying more than a few words in greeting to her.”

Eric frowned, closing his eyes for a moment while he tried to piece together his memories. “I got a call last night to come to my quarters. I can’t recall why now. That’s probably the last memory I can make out for certain. It was around… 20:00 hours? Yes, because I remember checking the time just around then to see when the next bridge shift was supposed to start. I was heading over to my quarters to see what the call was about, and… That’s really it.” Eric opened his eyes at that last statement.

“What time did you all get the alerts from me?” Eric asked.

-Cmdr. Eric Holmman, XO

The chronometer read about 0730, and it had been about 30 minutes, give or take, since the first call went out.

Rainns sat and listened quietly to both Hilo and Holmman’s statements. Holmman’s lack of memory made sense to him, if Joseph had been found with a body in his room he also would claim not to remember what happened. He pocketed his doubt in the moment. He simply nodded as Holmman talked. “0700 hours.” He replied to Holmman’s question, keeping a stern expression trained on the XO as he talked. “Do you remember who placed the call to you at 2000 hours sir?” He asked, his tone neutral, as Rainns was doing everything in his power to not sound incredulous. Holmman’s answers were not satisfactory to the Chief of Security. Rainns was not in the mood for his ‘I can’t remember’ routine he was doing.
