A minute or so later CSO McMorran appeared outside the XO’s quarters, scampering hurriedly along the corridor with her red hair swaying and a tricorder in each hand. When she arrived at the entrace to Hollman’s quarters she didn’t enter. Instead she stood just aside from the doors, breathing slowly and deeply as she awaited the arrival of the cadet she had called in.

Lt. J.G. Aili McMorran - CSO

T’Mor had received the call and made her way to meet with Lieutenant McMorran. There where already a few speculations going around among the crew on what had happened. None of these stories were consistent enough with each other, however, to give her any idea of what to expect. She approached the CSO and stood at attention outside the door.

“Lieutenant,”she said, acknowledging her superior.

Cadet T’Mor, Science Department

Aili acknowledged T’Mor with a solemn nod, somewhat unsure still after all her pondering as to how she should address the cadet in such grim circumstances. In the moments after receiving the captain’s communique the CSO had hurriedly selected her Vulcan cadet to assist her, considering her probably best placed to handle the potentially upsetting situation. T’Mor’s expertise in botany may not have been specifically what was needed but she wagered that her wider biological expertise would come in useful. McMorran knew, however, that the Vulcan mind was no simple thing. She aimed to be as gentle as possible while not offending the cadet’s Vulcan sensibilities as she had come close to doing when they first met.

McMorran struck a mournful tone. “Cadet, I don’t know how well you know Ensign Janga. I’m sorry to tell you that she has been found deceased here… in the first officer’s hot tub…” A tricorder was held out as an offering. Aili was keen to not linger on the emotion even if she was still trying to clear her own head. “We are to sweep the tub and search for any, well, clues as to what happened here. We’ll be working with a security cadet.” The Scot’s accent had thickened as her emotion became visible.

OOC: Don’t forget your signature! :D

Ander’s initial scan found some clues that science would need to analyze. First, there were two champagne flutes easily within arms reach of the hot tub. Both had some amount of sparkling wine in it, still very bubbly, but room temprature.

Next part of the XO’s clothing was folded neatly on one of the benches next to the hot tub, as opposed to the ensign’s uniform and other unmentionables. The rest had been strewn about as well but it looked more haphazard rather than pulled off in a true fit of passion.

Lastly the temperature was set as high as possible giving the room a foggy, almost sauna like feeling. Why?

T’Mor raised her brows inquisitively. Curiosity made her want to ask nearly a dozen more questions. Even more she wondered why the Lieutenant would choose her, and not someone whose skills were more suited for the investigation. Still, she did not want be insensitive and cause McMorran any more upset than she obviously was.

“That is very regrettable,” she replied in a limited attempt at warmth. After accepting the tricorder she continued,

“I will do my best to assist in any way I can.”

OOC: I’ve slightly rearranged the ordering so it flows better.

IC: “It is cadet, it certainly is.” The Lieutenant straightened up, pushing aside her emotional response as best she could for the moment being. “Apply your skills to investigate as you see fit. Do try not to disturb the scene though. With me”, she instructed T’Mor before turning to the doors and passing through as they slid apart.

Kyle had not noticed the heat until his tricorder scan picked it up. As the sweat began to stream down the young cadet’s body, he closed the tricorder and turned to address Lieutenant McMorran.
“Lieutenant, with your permission, I need to report my findings to Lieutenant Rainns.”

-Cadet Kyle Anders

McMorran knew Anders slightly, he had joined the ship as a cadet briefly before her own graduation and promotion, and she was thankful for a friendly face. Aili gave him a quick, genuine smile in greeting before sealing up her personality. “Not right now, Cadet Anders. Rainns is occupied with his own investigation. Report any findings to me and we will interrupt him only when truly necessary.” She raised her eyebrows, as if to question his understanding.

“Do you have any early finding to fill me and Cadet T’Mor in on?” The CSO looked around for the science cadet as she asked the question, taking in the scene around them as she did so. Their presence felt wrong to her. Never before had the personal space of a colleague become the setting for her duties. Challenging experiences like this, she supposed, would equip the cadets well for the diverse situations they would doubtless face after graduating from the aptly named Challenger.

Lt. J.G. Aili McMorran - CSO

Kyle breifly scolded himself for running on auto pilot at an inapropriate moment. He nodded in understanding.

“Yes ma’am, I have a theory if I may? Someone has deliberately turned up the heat in here, possibly to conceal entry. This is more of a hunch than a definitive possibility, but normally, you can detect a slight ripple in the air around you if someone is trying to conceal themselves, like how the Jem’Hadar used portable cloaking tech during the Dominion War to outwit us during ground combat. It would be harder to detect that ‘ripple’ if something like this steam was coating the room. With your permission, I can initiate a sweep for tachyon particles?”

Anders hoped that this theory was not too far fetched, there was just something about this fog that he did not like.

-Cadet Kyle Anders: Security-

As she entered, T’Mor was immediately hit with the heavy humid air. It was terribly uncomfortable, not so much the heat but the added moisture. Additionally there were the smells. The sterilization agent of the hot tub, the rose petals, and the alcohol. She stood by McMorran and listened to Anders’ idea. It was an interesting theory. Though at this time she was not aware of any indication of an intentional murder, she believed he was on to something.

Upon entering the space the heat had hit Aili like a hammer. The pale woman didn’t take well to hot climates, especially one so artificially intense. She began flapping a hand, fanning her face in an effort to somehow beat back the heat. “Well Cadet, it is a hot tub but this does seem… excessive.” She glanced over at the hot tub controls. “Aye, it’s at the maximum.” The CSO took a deep breath and blew out loudly, in response to both Anders’ theory and the heat. “Tachyon particles? You think someone on this ship has access to a personal cloaking device?” She sounded sceptical. “Very well, proceed. We must be thorough.”

McMorran’s fanning hand gave up and lurched at the zip of her uniform, undoing it slightly so she was less tightly wrapped. “T’Mor, thoughts?”

“Humans have been known to suffer serious heat exhaustion while intoxicated.” she said, using her eyes to indicate the champagne bottle.

The CSO nodded. “Noted.”

As far as T’Mor was aware, the orders had already been given to her, so there was no need to ask permission before starting to investage the scene. Specifically, she walked over to examine the glasses and bottle for finger prints. Leaning over with tricorder in hand, she began by gathering the visual data, and being careful not to touch the glass in the process. For good measure, also scanning the chemical composition of the champagne. At this distance the smell of it was almost overwhelming.

(OOC: Besides the other information: Has the champagne been out long enough to sour? It will usually lose it’s fizz a few hours after opening, but it also spoils really fast in heat. Do I smell sour champagne or is it fresh?)

Cadet T’Mor, Science Department

McMorran looked on approvingly as the cadet set to work. Again glancing around the scene she pondered what to first investigate herself. After considering the clothing she mentally shrugged and approached the tub itself. Kneeling beside it, she held her tricorder over the still water, looking for any abnormalities in its content.
