Sharah continued to slowly eat her food while she listened to him. When he was done she paused, her fork halfway to her mouth and put it down. She picked up her water, drinking it, not quite having choked on her food, but her mouth suddenly very dry. She didn’t see herself like that all. She’d always been described as sick, unguarded, flighty, unfocused, and when she was younger uncontrolled and dangerous. To Joseph, she seemed a little sad, but not necessarily in a bad way. ‘Do you really see me that way?’ She didn’t really see her self like that. She knew she was stubborn and determined, but she didn’t see herself as strong, her mind was always such…a mess…until recently. ‘You, you’re tough. Your mind is formidable, it’s intimidating. And physically you have to be tough, your COS.’ She also thought he was extremely attractive.

‘Yes Sharah, I do, I would never lie to you about something as important as this.” Joseph replied. ‘You are the most amazing woman I’ve ever met, who else could have made it as far as you have in life if they didn’t have grit, determination and toughness.’ He set his bowl down on the table and reached for her hands. ‘You have all the makings of a brilliant and successful doctor in the future, and I want to be there with you every step of the way. I think I knew I wanted that from the moment you first visited my mind.’ He pointed up at his head. ‘I wouldn’t trade you for the universe.’

There was a warm/cold feeling spreading down Sharah’s back and making her feel a little light headed and unsteady. She didn’t really know what to say. She hadn’t thought he was lying; she just had a hard time accepting it herself. She held onto his hands, maybe a little too tight and breathing a little too fast. They’d talked about being together for, well for a life time, and many other things, but for some reason she just couldn’t seem to think straight. Her mind was a swirling mess, ‘the universe is awfully big, there’s a lot out there.’ The idea that he wouldn’t ‘trade’ her seemed awfully wonderful to her. She needed to say something, but couldn’t think straight enough to do so. She stared at his hands holding hers and then looked up into his eyes.

Joseph returned her gaze. He could feel her confusion and mental disconnect. What he could not tell was what the cause of her current state. He began worrying that maybe he had said too much, maybe Sharah didn’t feel the same way, and he was spouting his soul off to her, putting her on the spot. ‘I haven’t upset you have I?’ He asked cautiously.

‘What? No!’ she was trying to figure out how to say what she wanted to say. More out of reflex than though, she simply slipped into that calm center in his mind where she could simply be with just her own craziness and not everyone else’s. The noise battering her buffeting him. She was able to take a deep breath and let it out. ‘I love you, Imzadi. I guess I was just a little overwhelmed by how much for a moment. I can’t fathom how I got so lucky. I…I guess I just don’t know how to take a compliment very well.’ Mimicking how she was curled up in his head she curled up next to him on the couch.
Cadet Fayth, Doctor

Rainns could hear the noise Fayth was dealing with. He felt her retreat into his mind. He welcomed her presence and created a barrier with the outside world, shielding her from the noises by creating a mental cocoon for her conscious to dwell. At the same time, he wrapped his arms around her curled body. ‘You will always be safe with me imzadi.’ He said. ‘I promise.’

Sharah simply stayed there for several minutes. She closed her eyes and breathed. Eventually her own swirling thoughts settled. She wrapped herself in Joseph’s promise. She knew he didn’t make them lightly and so it was precious to her. Suddenly she remembered he probably wanted to finish her food. She felt better, but was simply to comfortable to move. Quietly she asked, ‘Does your old soul like movies?’
