As the boarding shuttle docks with the ship, Cadet Clark says his thanks to the pilot and takes his first look at his first posting, the USS Challenger. His first duty is to report to his Department Head, Lt. Keval Vras, James only know that this man is Andorian, and he is the Chief Engineer about the Challenger. As James is walking down to the corridor, he starts thinking about all the exciting things that he might encounter on his first assignment, all the unique experiences, and yet as he steps into the turbolift, he can’t help but feel… apprehension. “What if the crew don’t like me” and other such thoughts start to rush through his head, he does his best to ignore them.

“Computer, current location of Lt. Keval Vras?”

A response comes:
“Main Engineering”

“Take me there.”
And with the command, the turbolift starts moving, head for main engineering. Just as the worrying thoughts start to creep back into his mind, the turbolift stops, and it’s doors open, he steps out of the lift and goes to find his Commander…

OOC: Great post. Just a couple of quick tips:

1) Remember to sign your post at the end (you can see the end of my post below for an example). It will take a few posts to get into the habit.

2) A lot of the times when we have our character talking through a communicator or to the computer, we use a comm-badge symbol instead of quotation marks. There are two types used by players in STF, either one is fine. =^= or =/\=

3) You’ll notice I made a slight change in the title of the thread. I changed it from “CO” to “DH”. In STF, we tend to reserve “CO” for the ship’s captain. We refer to the heads of each ship department as a “Department Head” or “DH”.

4) As I said, that was a good opening post. When you are ready, you should start some parallel threads of your character reporting to sickbay and the ship’s counselor.

As Cadet Clark approached Engineering, the doors opened, and an Andorian engineering officer stepped out, with a couple of toolboxes. He paused mid-step upon sight of the cadet. “You’re new,” he said, before his voice lit up in amusement. “Which is great. You can carry some of these!”

The Andorian handed most of the equipment to the cadet, and then quickly started walking towards the turbolift Clark just came from. He didn’t turn around, clearly expecting the cadet would follow.

When the two had entered the turbolift, the Andorian gave the destination (“Deck Seven”), before turning to the cadet. “Who are you, again?”

“Cadet Clark sir.”
Clark tries to extend his hand in an attempt to shake the Andorian’s hand, but after a short while of trying to hold both boxes in one hand, he fails and hopes his DH didn’t notice the display of pure incompetency, he decides he will shake his hand at a later date when he has a hand free.

“Excellent”, the Andorian replied. “I’m Lieutenant Keval Vras, Challenger’s Chief Engineer. It is always a good sign if I actually bring with me cadets who are actually assigned to Engineering.”

As the turbolift approaches deck seven, Clark tries to break the awkward silence
“If I may ask sir, why are we going to deck seven?”

“We’re going to be inspecting the conduits between Deck Seven and Eight,” Keval explained, intentionally not giving a very helpful answer. He looked at Cadet Clark. “Tell me, cadet, what would you anticipate we need to inspect between the two decks?”

As Keval waited for the answer, the turbolift doors opened, and he walked out, expected Clark to follow.

Clark quickly steps out of the turbolift and starts following the Lieutenant, he thinks for a short while before answering the question. He does his best to remember the ship schematics he spent days studying, even with the excessive amount of studying Clark did about the Challenger, he somehow still didn’t seem to remember them all that clearly.

“It’s… The docking clamps! Inbetween decks 7 and 8 are the ships docking clamps!” he says this a lot louder than he meant too.

Suddenly remembering the position of who he is talking to, he hurriedly sticks a “sir” on the end of his sentence. He then looks forward and down slightly and keeps following.

Keval looked over at the cadet, his antennae curving slightly in amusement. “Indeed,” Keval said, before being distracted with opening up the entrance to the Jefferies tubes.

“Because the hull is designed to separate between the two decks, it does make Challenger more susceptible to hull breaches in this area. There are two ways to prevent that from happening, and we need to regularly inspect both,” Keval said, as he entered the Jefferies tubes. “One is, of course, installing additional hull plating.”
