Slightly out of breath from all the running, Kyle decided to head back to his quarters and take a sonic shower before turning in for the evening to prepare for his first day as a (kind of) fully-fledged officer aboard the Challenger. As Kyle rounded the corner and saw his dormitory door, he immediately noticed that the lock still hadn’t been fixed, he tried to enter the room cautiously, so as not to wake (and, more than likely, aggravate) Cadet Trenton.-Cadet Kyle Anders: Security-
Ashlyn was glad to see that Ryan had graduated and moved on to his first ship, but this meant that she would need a new shift partner and this made her mildly uncomfortable. She worked on schooling her expression about it so it wouldn’t show so much. As per everyone else, she needed to be okay working with new people and she was, save a few accidental outbursts. The sonic shower was fairly relaxing, but she would need some real water soon. Maybe the holodeck had a pool program? Either way, it was clear that she either forgot she had a roommate or didn’t care as she casually strolled into the room to get in uniform leaving little to the imagination. She wasn’t even phased or halted when the door suddenly slid open, now she would have to report to Lieutenant Rainns that the door lock wasn’t fixed yet. “Well that’s a problem, welcome back, don’t be late.” The cadet scrutinized the door lock for a moment before pulling out a clean uniform to put on.

Anders groaned internally, And a good evening to you too, he thought to himself. Out loud he said, “Is the sonic shower usable? I could do with getting a quick one in before I turn in for the evening.” Only then did Kyle notice that Trenton was wearing a fresh uniform. “If I’m not overstepping my mark here, where are you going at this time of night? Surely there’s no need to patrol the ship?”
-Cadet Kyle Anders: Security-
Trenton gave Anders a long searching stare, trying to determine if he already forgot or if he’s just that tired. “You do remember when I said I was Third Shift right? Also, you did hear that Cadet John Ryan just graduated today didn’t you? That means the newest cadet is my new shift partner.” Trenton pointed at the bathroom, “The shower is good to go, but don’t be late to your first shift. That would be sad to have to pull a shift on my own, especially if the Engineers want to play with the sensors again.” Trenton’s expression softened as she finished pinning her communicator to her jacket, “If you’re not ready for it, I’ll let the L-T know you need another day to adjust your sleep schedule. It’s really not a big deal, I’d rather you be fully prepared than come in unrested.” Trenton moved over to the replicator in the room and ordered an emergency survival ration, a sort of supplement bar that she was most accustomed to eating. She figured that she would hang around at least long enough to get his answer, then go to shift with him should he decide to go.
- Cadet Ashlyn Trenton
Kyle was confused, “I’m pretty sure I’m First Shift? No one said anything to me about being your shift partner?”
-Cadet Kyle Anders: Security-
Trenton doesn’t argue, instead she turns on her computer terminal and pulled up the duty roster to show the confused Cadet. “The Lieutenant is very direct and blunt, also uses negative reinforcement but that’s besides the point. Point is, when he says be ready for work shortly, he’s not kidding. So congratulations, welcome to the Night Watch, unless you would rather put in for a shift change? I can help you with that request, but it means someone else is getting pretty shafted.” Trenton leans back in her chair and brings her feet up to cross her legs. “As you can see, Lieutenant Rainns is very pragmatic, he’s got all the new cadets scheduled before they even arrive and makes schedule changes based on arrival delays. Unless…” Trenton took a moment to observe Cadet Anders, watching his non-verbal signs. “Unless you just don’t want to work with me specifically?”
- Cadet Ashlyn Trenton
Kyle sighed, he was aggravated with himself for letting the day get ahead of him, “How long do I have?” he asked, hurriedly. He had to resist the urge to start stripping off the top half of his uniform in front of the young cadet.
-Cadet Kyle Anders: Security-
Trenton checked the computer for the time and turned back, “Fortunate, you have fifty three minutes so as long as you don’t take an hour in the showers you have plenty of time.”
- Cadet Ashlyn Trenton, Security
Kyle nodded his thanks and bolted into the sonic shower. As the sonic waves hit, Kyle felt more and more relaxed. It had been a busy day, the young cadet was looking forward to undertaking his first Bok’Mara class the next morning. But for now, he would have to ‘enjoy’ his first round of the night shift. After around 5 minutes, Kyle deactivates the shower, throws his uniform on rather quickly (causing him to have to adjust his combadge twice) and moved towards the door. After allowing it to open, he extended his hand and said: “Ladies first” in the politest way possible.
-Cadet Kyle Anders: Security-
Trenton suppressed a laugh, deciding that he meant well from the gesture. With a quick hop the cadet was on her feet and headed out the door to go report in for shift. “The Night Watch lead is Ensign Bough, he’s a former enlisted officer so he’s got just as much if not more experience than the Lieutenant. We’ll do guard-mount with him and the rest of the Night Watch, arm up, then head to our patrol locations for inspections. Then I’ll teach you armory inventory procedures, complete a second patrol, break for lunch, third patrol, then study group. Each person is responsible for contributing to study group based on their major in the Academy. I’m responsible for tonight so you don’t have to worry about it. My major was Information Security and Counter-Intelligence.” Trenton is sharing the schedule on her PaDD with Anders to get him up to speed on what is going on for the evening. “We’ll see Lieutenant Rainns in the morning after shift is over to report the door lock still being broken. Any questions?”
- Cadet Ashlyn Trenton
Kyle smiled, “Nothing getting started won’t answer for me, Cadet. Shall we?”
-Cadet Kyle Anders: Security-
Trenton led Anders to the Armory where the other “Night Watch” members were gathered for the guard mount. Most were just standing around having casual conversation with each other when Ensign Bough walked in. Ensign Bough, a male Betazoid standing about six feet tall, had all the signs of his age evident having made it to the officer ranks just under the maximum permitted age. Several visible scars share stories of engagements he had been a part of or bar fights he had to break up before taking up an officer rank.
As he got to the front of the gathering, everyone grew quiet and organized themselves into a formation where they waited for the day’s instructions. “Cadet Anders, welcome to the Night Watch. Get to know your brothers and sisters, they’ll be one of the few you know you can count on. Trenton, show him the ropes. I expect you to replace Ryan and drop the jokes. I’m glad to be rid of that bad humor, shame though. I really had hoped he’d get to stick around. Today’s major events, a birthday party in nine forward, so I don’t know what plans you had, but Trenton and Anders, you get to watch them get drunk and keep them from being stupid. DON’T HIDE THEM IN THE CLOSET AGAIN. The one time you thought it was a good place to tell people to make out, Lieutenant Mika found them and I had to wake up to write that report for Lieutenant Rainns.” The Ensign continued down the list of assignments for the others before asking if anyone had any questions.
- Cadet Ashlyn Trenton
Anders joined the rest of the cadets in a chorus of “No sir,” and went over to the weapons rack to pocket a phaser pistol. Kyle made a mental note to ask Trenton, or possibly one of the more amiable cadets about the ‘closet’ incident. Kyle eventually found Trenton as he slid a tricorder into the right-hand pocket of his belt.
“Don’t worry,” he whispered, “I’ll try and keep my jokes to a minimum.”
-Cadet Kyle Anders: Security-
Trenton also collected her standard equipment and requested a satchel of extra binders and a first aid kit. “First lesson of On the Job Training, OJT for short, Pay attention at Guard Mount. Not every leader will give thorough briefings so you have to read into what they are saying and anticipate what you will have to deal with. So, with that in mind, give me your own interpretation of what was briefed in Guard Mount that was important to remember?”
- Cadet Ashlyn Trenton
Kyle began listing the important events to note: “Well, there’s the party in Nine Forward. You must tell me what Ensign Bough meant by ‘Don’t put them in the closet again’, seemed like an interesting story. When we get down there, we should post ourselves at the North and South exits respectively, that way we can both move into the middle of the room if things start to get a little out of control.” Kyle could not escape the feeling that Cadet Trenton was waiting for him to screw up.
-Cadet Kyle Anders: Security-
Trenton chuckled and shook her head, “Long story short, a couple of cadets were trying to hide their affections for each other so I told them it would be better to hide in a storage closet somewhere else so they could show affection with fewer interruptions. They chose the storage locker in Medbay 2 and Lieutenant Mika found them doing more than expected. They said a non-descript Security Cadet told them it was okay. So Ensign Bough had to come in to write up the report. As a result, we don’t tell people it’s okay to make out in a closet.”
Trenton gestured toward Anders’s equipment, “So explain to me why you have equipped yourself as you have. What purpose does each piece of equipment you have serve in your own opinion? Anyone can rattle off Starfleet Regulations, I want to hear that you understand them.”
- Cadet Ashlyn Trenton
Kyle smiled, “Simple, we don’t want one of the replicators to malfunction at a party, so this baby,” he gestured towards the tricorder, “Will identify the problem and have a team of engineers in Nine Forward before you can say multimodal reflection sorting.” Anders drew the phaser, “This is for when things get a little hairy, but of course, it’s important that it is kept on stun only at all times.” Kyle decided to showboat a little by flipping the phaser in his hand and blowing on the barrel in the manner of an old Earth custom popularised by Cowboys in the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
-Cadet Kyle Anders: Security-
There were some things that Trenton was about to say about the tricorder, but instead paused when Anders drew his phaser. This also got the attention of the rest of the Night Watch, as they all dove for cover when he decided to flip his phaser. Once the phaser was back in its holster, Ashlyn was quick to pull it from his hip and set it on the table behind herself. She was clearly angry, “Basic weapons safety! You ALWAYS treat a weapon as if it is dangerous BECAUSE IT IS! Three simple rules taught in the Academy; 1: Know your target. 2: Know your weapon. 3: Treat your weapon as if it is set to VAPORIZE! What would you have done if your weapon malfunctioned and gone off while you were showing off huh?! Who was in your line of fire? ME! What is behind me? Explosive material! If your weapon had gone off, we would all be dead and there would be a hole in the ship!”
Trenton grabbed the bag of extra restrainers and let Ensign Bough take over. The Ensign, looking far calmer and collected than Trenton did, picked up the phaser and handed it back to Anders. “Turn in, you’re going to be on reports today and this incident will be the first report you make. We take weapons safety very seriously because unlike the rest of the ship, we’re trusted to hold them all day, every day, so we have to be sure to always respect them. Now, Trenton did lose her cool more than she should have, but she was also in the right. What you did was dangerous and careless and could have injured a lot of people. My lesson to you today, don’t show off. At best, the people that don’t know any better get mildly impressed. At worst, something goes wrong and people get hurt.” Clearly disappointed, Ensign Bough walks away to start writing his report.
- Cadet Ashlyn Trenton
Note to self, Anders mused, Save the party tricks for the holodeck “My apologies Cadet, you’re right of course, I should’ve known better.” Kyle drew from a pile of PADDs and began to note down the report. He decided to note down that there had been a miscommunication that nearly caused an unintentional weapons discharge. Anders knew that Trenton would not let him live this down, so he decided to stay off the subject for the rest of his shift.
-Cadet Kyle Anders: Security-
The report notes sent into Anders were, for the most uneventful. Even the party that Trenton had to watch over didn’t have anything out of the ordinary take place, a shouting match that Trenton defused, but that isn’t report worthy. The most unusual thing reported was a miscount of received packages, for some reason there were extra phaser emitter coils delivered to the cargo bay when they should have been delivered to the Armory with all the other weapon systems components. They have been scheduled for delivery during the morning shift so that situation has been dealt with. There were also repaired field emitters for the brig, fifteen more repaired door locks one of which being the one for Trenton and Anders’s room, and a correction in the communications relay all observed by various members of the Night Watch. In total, Anders had to put together seven reports for the evening as the first shift starts to arrive so they can get ready to muster and have their Guard Mount.
- Cadet Ashlyn Trenton
This was not the kind of first shift on Security that Kyle had been expecting, however, he understood that everyone in Starfleet had to start somewhere. He was not looking forward to facing Lieutenant Rainns after the incident in the security office. He decided that he would take a session on the phaser range in order to appease his thirst for the smallest hint of adrenaline. He decided however first that he needed to continue to try to make a good impression with his colleagues in Security (an impression which the phaser incident would not have helped) After handing in the reports to Ensign Bough, Anders caught up with Trenton.
“Hey Ashlyn,” he called as he spotted her in the corridor, “Breakfast in our quarters is on me,” he smirked, “Call it an apology and a peace offering.”-Cadet Kyle Anders: Security-
Ashlyn spun when she heard her name called and watched the other cadet run up to her. His offer of breakfast was appreciated, but his reasons just didn’t sit with her well. So she shook her head and prepared her next lesson for the new cadet. “Kyle, look, I appreciate the offer but I can’t. I have plans already for my mornings, I teach parkour till close to the afternoon and I don’t eat more than a nutritional supplement bar anyway. Besides all that, the best apology you can make is a change in behavior. Offering food as an apology or a peace offering is no different from trying to bribe your way into good graces and that is not a position you want to be in.” Because she had places she needed to go, Trenton walked with Anders toward their quarters while continuing the conversation. “Do you understand why we responded to your attempt to show off so poorly? What would you have done if something had gone wrong?”
- Cadet Ashlyn Trenton, Security
Kyle bristled slightly but tried not to show it, Ok ok, enough with the parenting, you’re a cadet too, not my CO, was what he wanted to say, but, at the same time, he didn’t want to burn the bridge between himself and Trenton even further, so decided to take the more diplomatic route.
“I’d have taken whatever punishment deemed necessary from Ensign Bough. I intend to slot some practice on the phaser range to tire my cowboy tendencies out before our next shift. You can join me after you’re done in t’gym if you’d like?”
