She reached out to pick up her glass and got empty air. She looked up confused and realized she had made it to the mess hall, but had been so engrossed in her work she hadn’t actually ordered anything. She saw the line for the replicators and decided to wait till it thinned a bit. She put her head back and rolled the ache out of her shoulders. What time was it anyway?
Cadet Fayth, DoctorA padd was dropped on the table in front of her, and Joseph Rainns sat down, holding a tray with a ham and cheese sandwich. “Afternoon Doctor.” He said, quickly praying and then eating.

Sharah glanced at the PaDD slightly startled and looked up, then smiling. Her day just got a lot better. “Is it dinner time already?” Obviously it was a meal time, she just hadn’t realized which one. “I’ll be right back.” She went to wait in the shortened line and came back with fruit and yogurt. She sat down and began to eat, ‘Forgive the small talk, but how are you doing? I feel like I haven’t seen you in days.’
Cadet Fayth, DoctorRainns took a small bite of his sandwich, and chewed quickly. ‘It’s fine. I’m quite alright, vetting some new cadets, scheduling shifts and working on my own personal tasks. How about yourself?’
Lt. JG Joseph Rainns- COS
Sharah tapped the PaDD she had been working on, ‘Working on this research project. I just sent the initial draft to Lt. Mika. I’m not sure how clear the…details are. It’s meant for non-medical personel, so I’m trying not to get lost in the medical terminology. After hours with experiments and research I’m stuck in doctor mode I guess and I’m getting frustrated at myself. I came down here to step away from it. Guess I shouldn’t have brought the PaDD with me.’ She shrugged a little.
Cadet Fayth, DoctorJust talking to Fayth made Rainns feel at peace and happy. He had been busy all day and was finally able to relax for a bit. ‘what’s wrong with doctor mode’ He asked, making air quotes with his fingers. ‘If you ever need a guinea pig to read your writings meant for non medical professional, I happen to be a non medical professional myself.’
Lt. JG Joseph Rainns- COS
‘Actually, that’s a wonderful offer. Just one possible problem, you know how I think, so it may read clearer to you than someone else. But I’ll take your offer. The problem is that…wait…Let me start over.’ Sharah took the last bite of her food and then started over speaking aloud, “I’ve been creating a list of folk, or herbal, medicines. The idea is to provide a list of plants/minerals/chemical compounds for away teams to look for. Most often away teams don’t take medical personnel with them unless medical help is requested before hand. And, not necessarily due to dangerous circumstances, away teams get disconnected from their ships with no medical help available and people get injured. So the idea is to have this list, with information on how to make these folk remedies to help injured personnel until medical help arrives.” She was starting to speak quickly because she was excited about her research and to share with him what she had been doing the last several days.
Cadet Fayth, DoctorJoseph smiled and leaned back in his seat. “I assume these medicines are proven to be effective. ” he took a sip of water from his glass. “And are not just medical recipes from ancient tapestries.” He could tell what Sharah was talking about excited her, and he couldn’t help but feel a little of that enthusiasm impress itself upon him.

Sharah paused looking at him quizzically as she spoke, “Oh..yes, of course they are. It’s all based on chemical composition and these plants share that. They also share chemical composition with medicines we use in sickbay. Of course, it’s plausible that there won’t be any plant that resembles the ones I’ve listed so in that case the chemical and mineral bases are listed so that they can be searched for instead. I mean ideally an away team would have a med kit, but that’s not standard. A medkit is carried by medical staff and we aren’t part of initial away teams. We, as a department, don’t usually have the training needed. We become a liability rather than help if things become dangerous. So this,” she tapped her PaDD again, “maybe will bridge that gap before medical personnel can arrive.” She glanced at the information on the PaDD again, “If anyone understands my ramblings but me.” She laughed a little at herself and put the PaDD down. She wasn’t here to obsess over her work, not right now anyway. She glanced over at Joseph, “Sorry, I tend to obsess over my little projects.” She sat back acknowledging the fact that she was much more relaxed since he sat down than she had been earlier.
Cadet Fayth, DoctorJoseph reached out with a hand and put it on hers. “I’m doing an ok job of following you.” He said with a soft smile. “I think that’s great, you are doing your best to help other be more prepared and ready to handle problems in life, which is a very admirable goal, and there is nothing wrong with “obsessing” over it. You want to do the best you can, don’t apologize for that.”

Sharah laced her fingers through his. “I really want to make a difference. Do you know the number of personnel that don’t make it because they don’t get help in time during situations where for one reason or another they get cut off? It’s too high, like close to 30%. That is way to high, I mean, I won’t be happy if it’s even 1%, but that’s not realistic. But the problem is that they have to be able to make the medicine for it to work. Hence my current frustration.”
