By the time Aili had gotten a glass of water for her, Mika’s mouth felt less like a fireplace. She took the glass anyway, taking a big swig as soon as she could. As she set the water down she felt Aili’s hand and momentarily tensed before relaxing once again. “Oh, that was completely my fault. No need for you to apologize.” She said, and then she turned to look at Aili and smiled. “Thank you, though.”

Silently, Aili sported an apologetic smile before refinding her seat. She cleared her throat loudly. “Annyyway… So when did you get started with you martial arts?”

“High school.” Tandra replied, suddenly looking uncomfortable. “I started learning it when I was sixteen.” She added, and then she began toying with the haggis on her plate, testing their heat this time.

Sensing Tandra’s discomfort and desperate not to force any further discomfort on her, Aili quickly moved to change the subject. “And why come out here? There are colony hospitals with no shortage of patients.” She struck an excited, dramatic tone. “Why a starship?” Pushing a little of each element on her plate onto her fork, she blew on it gently for a few second before eating it up.

Blowing on a piece of her own and cautiously sticking it in her mouth, she said, “A colony? How boring would that be? On a starship, you never know what situation you might be in next. Or what planet you might be on. That’s why I study survival medicine, as well as a wide variety of more… modern-day methods. One day you might be treating…” her eyes lit up as she spoke, and she began to ramble on, some of it being deep enough in the medical field that Aili likely wouldn’t understand everything she was saying. She had, at some point during her ramblings, set down her fork after her first bite.

As she continued to fork her food, Aili enjoyed simply listening to the passion in Tandra’s voice, even if she didn’t understand half of her words some of the time. Her eating slowed as she became intoxicated by Tandra’s eyes and their shared gaze. She could swear the caught a glint of excitement in those eyes whenever the words spoken reached an excited peak. Ultimately, she became still, sat with her fork frozen in place below her chin as she stared into the eyes of the other cadet, perfectly content just to watch and listen to Mika for the rest of the evening.

It would be another several minutes, making nearly a half an hour, before Tandra finally realized she’d been dominating the conversation and stopped herself. Aili had probably heard most of Tandra’s research, a lot of her studying from the beginning of Academy, and probably every even remotely interesting case she’d been on to date. After a pause, she added, “Sorry. I tend to get a bit… carried away with this stuff.”

Aili was frankly disappointed when the blathering came to a close. “Oh no! Trust me, I enjoyed it. I could listen to you all day.” Suddenly embarrassed, Aili looked down at her plate and pushed some of its remaining contents around. “Ahem”, she cleared her throat, “how are you liking this?”

“Oh, good. I’m glad I didn’t bore you,” Mika said, taking a bite of her food, which had now cooled down. “It’s good!” She said. In all honesty, she wasn’t really the biggest fan of the food, but she’d never, ever tell Aili that.
