“I have a strong interest in both Emergency and Cardio-Respiratory Medicine,” Hayley replied, “but I specialized in Emergency Medicine first. I figured you can pretty much go anywhere from there if you want to after all.”

“Indeed,” Tija replied with another nod. “And being able to handle the pressure and stress of emergency medicine is definitely more than helpful as a Starfleet Medical Officer. But other than that rational part of your decision, what else made you chose emergency medicine?”

“I guess it really just felt like I could do the most good there.” Hayley answered. “Even as a kid I couldn’t stand seeing people in pain. Being able to relieve that, it’s just…special.” Hayley paused and shook her head a little, “You know, I don’t think I’ve ever said that out loud. I’ve been giving the rational answers all my life. It seemed to be what was expected of me.”

“I think that is a very common thing to do, Cadet Marshall,” Tija said with a nod and a small smile. “Not only is it what we often assume people expect, but it also leaves us less vulnerable to stick with the rational answers. And speaking of vulnerabilities, what are your weaknesses and areas you feel like you need additional training or extra support?” While her question was rather blunt, she attempted to convey that the young woman had nothing to worry about by trying to soften her voice slightly.

Hayley took a moment to think about the latest question, “Bedside manner is always something I am working on, I tend to come across a bit awkwardly at times. I also need to expand my knowledge and experience in treating non-human species. I have only what was taught in the Academy Med School courses and fairly limited actual experience. As much as I would like to study Cardio-Respiratory some day it would be much more practical to focus on that right now.”

Tija nodded here and there while taking some more mental notes. “It’s good to have an idea what your weaknesses are and to have a plan how to work on them. We all have them and my motto in training fellow medical officers has always been to weaken weaknesses and to strengthen strengths. Which means I and the rest of the medical department are here to help you achieve the things you want to achieve, but also by pointing out other things you might want to focus on. Does that sound like something that you will be comfortable with?”

“Most definitely,” Hayley replied with a smile, “Sounds like the best possible way to work and learn at the same time. Your philosophy is very much like my brother’s, despite his field being so different from ours.”

Tija nodded and then asked, “Do you have any questions, concerns or ideas or anything else you’d like to talk about?”

“Not at the moment,” Hayley replied, “I’m sure I will have more questions as things progress. In the meantime what duties would you like me to take on to start with?”

Tija nodded. “At the beginning, I’ll assign you shifts alongside myself or any of the medical cadets who have been on board longer. So you can learn the ropes without feeling overwhelmed. Once you feel more comfortable, I’d like you to take over boarding evaluation of other cadets,” Tija replied. “My door is always open, so please don’t hesitate to approach me with anything.”

“Thank you Doctor, I look forward to getting started. Will you relay the schedule to my Padd then?” Hayley asked. “Do you need me to get started on anything right away? If not I wouldn’t mind just spending some time familiarizing myself with Sickbay if I am dismissed for now.” ~Hayley was impressed with Lt. Tija’s direct manner. She always preferred knowing exactly what was expected of her. It was also clear her offer of support was sincere which was reassuring to the inexperienced physician.~

“I will, yes. Spending time familiarising yourself with Sickbay and the other members of the department is a very good idea and something I’d always highly recommend. After all, in a situation of crisis you need to know exactly where everything is and knowing your colleagues is more than just helpful in those situations as well. If you don’t have any other questions, we should head over to sickbay and finish this with your medical evaluation,” Tija replied, a small smile playing across her face.
