“Then I will always attempt to be quirky,” she smiled finding the conversation slightly humorous but also very meaningful. “I’m pretty sure you could read my mind any time you wanted, and you’re welcome to whenever you like. You’ve done it once, when you found me in the security office.” She squeezed his hand, “You know you have a lot of courage. I don’t know anyone who would have waded into that storm to save another person like that.” She took a deep breath and relaxed a little more, “I find the code you live by very attractive. You stick to it. You’re willing to reevaluate, but once you give your word you don’t…” she lifted a shoulder not really sure how to put it clearly.

Rainns chuckled, “I think you overestimate my abilities, I can’t just read minds, my abilities only seem to work if there is an overly powerful telepath nearby, it’s like my mind is a box and somebody else holds the key. In this case that somebody is you.” A small smirk formed on his face. “I can’t just decide to use it, you have to let me, that’s what happened in the security office. ” He paused for a moment to think about his next words carefully. “I would say I’m less courageous than I am headstrong, when I’m situations I feel I am in danger, I become very cautious very quickly. Don’t go back on my promise?” Rainns added, attempting to finish her sentence.

She nodded, “Yes you don’t go back on your promises. To borrow a cliche courage is not the absence of caution, but rather action tempered by caution,” she looked over at him and laughed, “That was horrible…I don’t even know how I came up with that…” She sat up from her relaxed position turning fully towards him, “I wasn’t suggesting you could read all minds, just mine.” She winked at him, “So I hold the key to you? I like the sound of that.”

Rainns grinned, “I like that quote, and I certainly don’t mind the cliche.” He watched as Fayth sat up. “I mean I don’t know if I would put it in those terms, but yes, to a degree you do, I can only use my ability with you because your mind is so strong it allows me to do so.” For some reason, Joseph felt vulnerable saying that, even though it was a perfectly obvious fact to him.

The color rapidly drained from her face, “Oh, I’m sorry..I…I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable. I…” She got up and started moving things around randomly. Her thoughts moving to him, ‘now you know why people don’t like to be around me. I say or do things that I have no business speaking of.’ She wasn’t sure if she should stand or sit, ‘I wish I could take that back.’

Joseph stood up and walked up to Sharah. He took both her hands with his and held them firmly but gently. “Hey,” he said in a soft tone. “I’m not saying there is anything wrong with that. I just have spent my whole life being independent, and with you..” he paused for a moment. “I don’t have to be, I like that you can give me special abilities that most people can’t. Don’t be upset about that.” He looked down at her. “I know you’ve heard me think this a thousand times but you have the most beautiful and sparkling eyes I’ve ever seen.”

Sharah could only share her own sense of acceptance when she was with him. She looked up at him, “Thank you.” Feeling flustered she resorted to an attempt at humor, “It’s because they’re so exotic.” She wasn’t sure what to do except hold onto his hands. Other than their dinner three weeks earlier she hadn’t been on date since she had been home on Betazed.
