Joseph accepted her reach and took in what she was trying to convey. He saw her gratitude, guilt and pleasure. The ominous black ball in her mind looked scary, but he knew it was just a visual representation of her fear of being alone and misunderstood. He allowed to soak in. ‘The risk is over, and you didn’t hurt me, there’s nothing to regret’ he thought reassuringly. ‘No matter what happens, I’ll always be able to understand you, and that wouldn’t have happened without your sickness. That’s a blessing, please don’t be ashamed or upset.’ He reached out his hand and took hers. ‘Everything is ok now.’

She closed her eyes smiling slightly, ‘that is easier thought than done. The fear will always be a part of who I am. It’s what gives me the will to be stronger than this gift.’ She held onto his hand a little tighter and nodded. She was mentally tired now. Not too bad, but she choose to speak outloud, “Okay,”she agreed, “everything is okay now.” She started eating her desert. She didn’t know if he would like it, but she loved it. Orange, lime, and raspberry sherbet. “Tell me you’ve had a more interesting week than me. I’ve been stuck in here most of the time, no duty shift yet and ‘limited activity.’”
Cadet Fayth, DoctorRainns took a bite, it wasn’t his favorite dessert, but it was fine. “My week has probably just been about as boring as yours, wrote my report on the incident, and then it was business as usual, I’ve got two new cadets that have come in, and I’m going to be running a training exercise in a few weeks most likely. He stopped eating for a moment and starred out the window at the stars as the ship flew past them. “I want to make a real mark in starfleet, and I always thought that once I became an officer that would become easy, but I’m just more or less writing all the time, which I don’t mind, I just can’t do anything great that way.” He turned to look at Sharah, “my biggest fear is that I will die in obscurity, and that ten years after the fact, nobody will even know I existed, I know that’s a silly fear and I have lofty ambitions, but right now I can’t help but feel I’m just wasting time on this ship.”

Sharah smiled. “Oh Joseph, don’t you know you’ve already made a mark, here on this ship?” She got up and picked up a PaDD off her desk and handed it to him. It was the medical report, very official looking with Lt. Mika’s name and his on it. “You discovered an unknown parasite that has the potential to really do damage and even kill telepaths. Lt. Mika may have classified it and found the cure, but without you finding it, she couldn’t have done that. You’re both receiving credit for it. I know it’s not your field -medicine- but it was your investigation that found it. This thing could have been killing telepaths for hundreds of years and we never knew. You and Mika have just saved A LOT of lives, starting with me.” She took the desert bowls and put them away. She went and sat on the couch. “It may not be the way you expected to be remembered, but you will be, by many people.” She got a teasing look on her face, “so now you’ve saved hundreds of lives and right after you got your first promotion. Better get to living up to the bar you set for yourself.”
Cadet Fayth, DoctorJoseph smirked, “Well when you put it that way life doesn’t seem so bad.” He got up from his seat and joined Sharah at the couch. “The other component to a legacy though is to have someone carry it once you’re gone, you need someone to carry it on.” He looked at the wall for a second, in a momentary state of deep thought. “Not only do I have big career goals, but I have personal ones as well. I want to be a father one day, and in Starfleet, I’m not sure how plausible that is.” He stopped and rubbed his eyes, “I think about the future way to much, I need to learn to enjoy the present more.”
LT JG Joseph Rainns- COS
“Goals are good. I know there are many families among Star Fleet. Some even get to stay together on the same ship or outpost. Starfleet is usually helpful in that area. Or so they tell us at the Academy. Thinking of the future is great as long as you aren’t trying to live it before it happens.” Sharah blushed thinking about kids, but gave it some deep thought, “I think…I would like children some day. But then that fear…what if my child, had to live like I do? Don’t get me wrong I actually love my life. I know before it didn’t seem that way, I was so confused, but I do. It took me a long time to find that though and I’m still working on it.”
Cadet Fayth, DoctorRainns smiled. “I think your condition in a way would make you a great mom, but I’ve got to no credentials to back that up.” He looked around the room for a second before returning his gaze to Sharah. “Any deep thoughts in your head right now? I’m not really feeling small talk at the moment.”
LT JG Joseph Rainns- COS
Sharah let out a full body laugh, “I HATE small talk. It’s inane. I’ve always got deep thoughts but we’ve already discussed those.” She got up and walked over to the view screen by her desk. “See this, it’s a map of Betazed. I’ve been maping stories, current and historical, of people with my condition. I’ve been trying to find a cause or a cure, or something.” She turns to you, “Or you could teach me to play chess. Mentally, I’m tired enough I can’t cheat.” She raised a brow.
Cadet Fayth, DoctorRainns leaned back, “I’m always happy to learn about new things.” He looked over at the chess set, “besides I’m too tired to focus on that kind of game. Do you have any theories about a possible cure yet?” He asked turning back to Fayth.
LT JG Joseph Rainns- COS
“Yes and no. So I’ve been mapping where we all have come from, for as far back as I find references.” She pointed at the map to the view screen. It had purple dots on it to indicate locations, “Some of them are not super accurate. The oldest stories are hard to select an exact location and with the change and movement of the crust layer of the planet it’s hard. That kind of thing is beyond me, so I’ve been doing my best.” She adds another set of blue lines to it. “These show where those people traveled. I haven’t found one spot that they all traveled to.” She stopped, “Sorry I got ahead of myself. Many of the stories talk about the individual traveling far away and then returning and claiming to either be healed or much improved. That’s the blue lines. There is no one place where they all actually meet. I was hoping to find a place with a wild flower or something that would, or maybe a cave with some kind of chemical or mineral effect that would help.” She picks up the PaDD containing her research. After handing it to you she sits down in her chair and rubs her temples. “It’s all coming back in waves, each higher than the last. When I first woke up I couldn’t hear anything. It was so quiet. It was a little disturbing.” She nods to the PaDD, “All the stories have one single thing in common. The ones that managed to get better all use the word, ‘home.’ They found home, they were home, they had returned home. A few over lap in places, but not all of them. And I thought that was the answer. A place somewhere on Betazed. Then Tam Elbrum came along and messed that up. When he decided to stay with Tin Man the report reads that he said, “I’m finally home.” Well I know this species, Tin Man, didn’t come take all of the sick Betazoids away to help them because until Elbrum none of them had left Betazed. So now I don’t know.”
Cadet Fayth, Doctor
Rainns just sat on the couch and watched Fayth with Interest and gratitude. He was happy to see her lively again and to see her passionately talking the way she was. “If you found a cure, would you take it?” He asked after she was done talking.
