Rainns smiled, “Well that was a good pep talk, thank you. I know you are ultimately right, but it’s just a shock to me, and I can’t help but feel the way I do.” Rainns looked at the food, “ enough about me, let’s eat.”

Sharah smiled, “You are entitled to feel any way you want. Your feelings about it are valid and relevant.” As she got up she squeezed his hand, “I’m here. I’m not a counselor, but I’ll listen, give advice, crack jokes at your expense, though they will be very bad. I’ll help you research, I’ll even let you do it on your own. I’ll help you learn about and use this new talent. Whatever you need.” She walked over to the replicator and took out the two plates she had prepared and set them on the table. The pasta was miss shaped and looked nothing like bowties, but the rest looked okay she hoped. “Tell me if it’s awful. It won’t hurt my feelings.” She pointed to the wine bottle on the table, “Do you want a glass? I’m not allowed to yet, but I can pour you one.” The table was positioned to look out the window at the stars.

Joseph smirked, “Feelings are secondary to facts though, and your facts will always trump my feelings.” He looked at the food with an eager desire but waved his hand at the wine, “I’m quite alright, I’ll just stick with water tonight.” He said a quick prayer and then began to eat. The pasta wasn’t bad, and he liked the sauce, the chicken was especially tasteful. “It’s not bad Sharah,” he said, as he looked to her and then out the window, “you thought of everything.” Taking another bite and finishing he spoke up again. “I don’t think I want to really explore any of my abilities though, I prefer to live a simple life of just being a regular human.”

“I’m glad it came out alright.” She glanced at him while he glanced out the window, “I tried too.” She listened and she could understand why he might feel that way, but she was …sad…disappointed…she started clearing the plates. Joseph’s acceptance of her and her illness had been an unexpected joy. She had enjoyed sharing her thoughts with him and he had said he didn’t mind, that he wanted to. She took a deep breath and pushed it aside. It didn’t change how she felt about him, or that she wanted to spend a lot more time with him. She would respect what he wanted for himself. “And that,” she smiled a little sadly, “is up to you. Just promise me if it bothers you you’ll let me know. I am so sorry, that my ‘gift’ …no I’m sorry that I brought this to you. I never want to be the cause of your unhappiness.” Sharah walked over to another table and pulled out two bowls and got something from a container that was frosted over. She placed them on the table. “Fresh fruit sherbet. I used to make it with my mom when I was little.”

Rainns shook his head, “Don’t apologize, I’m grateful that you helped me learn more about myself and I love that we have the intimacy to explore each other’s minds, I still can and want to continue to do that. You are not and will never be, the cause of my unhappiness.” Joseph eyed the bowls, “I’ve never had this before,” he said, “let’s see how it goes.” He could tell as she got the bowls something was troubling her. “What’s the matter?” he asked in a concerned tone.

And there was the crux of the matter, “Joseph, I” she sat down next to him moving her chair a little closer. She hadn’t tried to directly speak with telepathy to anyone since she woke up. Not there was anyone on board other than Joseph. She knew the closer she was the easier it would be. “My greatest fear has been that I would really hurt someone, someone I care about…” she didn’t know exactly how to put it into words, “I’m sorry, I don’t know how to put it into words.” He had said he wanted to continue to share each other’s minds. She gently reached out to allow him to know, if he choose.

There were many things adding to her solemness. She knew that they wouldn’t have this intimate relationship if she hadn’t been sick. If she hadn’t been she would never have replied to him using telepathy and then they wouldn’t be here, the ‘ifs’ went on. Her overwhelming fear that she’s had since she was old enough to understand what was different about herself was a huge aching paralyzing black ball of fear she carried. She shared her joy of his acceptance. The attraction, and something more that she wasn’t ready to investigate too much. Then his revelation that she had turned his life upside down, when he had confessed the headaches to her. She was happy that it lead to him to learn more about himself, but the idea that instead of learning about his heritage it could have gone very wrong. She had not been safe or stable to be around and he…she had risked his life, his mind, because she was sick and unable to function, and she never knew. And then the fear rose up again that she could have lost him before she knew him. The ‘what ifs’ were her greatest enimy.

She sighed a little and spoke into his mind, ‘you mean to much to me to regret all this happening, but you mean too much for me to not regret the risk I placed you in.’
