As the office doors slid aside, Kyle entered the room, stepping forward with his hands behind his back in the formal manner of an officer standing to attention.

“Cadet Kyle Anders, reporting for duty sir.” He declared respectfully. Noticing the ice cubes on the desk, Kyle couldn’t help but feel as if he was melting himself.

Rainns tapped his pen on his clipboard, and motioned to the chair in front of the desk, “At ease Cadet, take a seat.” He watched the Cadet’s body language carefully to ascertain how the young man dealt with discomfort, thinking back to his first day when he was a spry young cadet walking in for his first check in.

Kyle relaxed slightly, “Thank you sir,” he said respectfully. He dropped into the chair, careful to remain alert as he awaited the first question.

OOC: Remember to include your signature at the end of posts, it helps in the longer threads trust me

IC: Rainns uncapped his pen, “Cadet Anders, What drew you into the business of starfleet security? Why do you want serve in this department as opposed to science or engineering?”

Kyle shifted in his chair briefly before preparing his answer: “Both of my parents served on the Nightengale during the Dominion War sir, they were both security officers themselves. I was on that same ship as a kid, and my Father always noticed that I was a dab hand at using a phaser.” Quickly realising that he had used a British-ism, Kyle corrected himself - “By which I mean target practice always came easy to me. About 2 years into the war, the Nightengale received a distress call from a distant mining colony in the Gamma Quadrant. They were being hassled by Jem’Hadar squadrons. Dad was sent down there to fend them off - only,” Kyle paused, trying to suppress the memory forcing its way into his mind, “He never made it back. Some things I heard from the crew suggested that he was cornered while trying to rescue some colonists from a hostage situation. Thank god, the hostages made it out alive, just not my father. Since then, I’ve wanted to follow in his footsteps, protect my ship’s crew, whatever it takes.” Kyle could feel an itch in his eye, as if a tear was forming, but resisted the urge to scratch it.

OOC - Thank you for reminding me

Rainns groaned mentally, ‘not again’ he grumbled in his head. He pushed the memory of another cadet getting emotional in his office out of his. He frowned, “I’m sorry to hear that Cadet.” He jotted down some notes on his clipboard. He couldn’t help how much the young man in front of him echoed Rainns’ own reasons for joining the security department in starfleet. “How do you plan to do that?” he asked. “What skills do you have, tangible and intangible that are best equipped for the security department?”

Kyle caught a look in his CO’s eye that seemed as if he was annoyed about something. Deciding to push on, he straightened and began his answer:
“I like to think I’m reliable, I can get any job done to the best of my ability. I have even been known to branch out into different fields,” Kyle briefly recalled the time he’d out-piloted some of the trainee helmsmen on one of his days away from studying. “I will always do my damndest to protect those I work with. My concentration and hand-eye coordination have become somewhat of a mysterious gift so my tutors tell me.”

Rainns smirked, he and the cadet seemed to have quite a bit in common. “What are some of these other fields?” Rainns inquired. Interested to see what kind of interests Anders had in activities outside of his regular duties.

Kyle was relieved to see that Rainns seemed to be warming to him, “Well,” he said, “In terms of an on-duty standpoint, I took a brief beginner’s course in piloting, passed that, and moved onto intermediate. I took the exam just before getting this assignment. In terms of an off duty standpoint, I’ve been part of both the Academy’s Operatic Society and Jazz Band,” Kyle began to move his fingers up and down in mid-air as if playing scales at high speeds, “I’m told I’m quite the accomplished pianist.”

Great, a musician, Rainns copied some notes down, “Well if we ever need a bard in the holodeck I’ll let you know.” He clicked is pen and smiled. “Do you consider yourself t be a team player or do you work better alone?”

Kyle couldn’t help but smirk at that. I’ll hold you to that, he thought. Pressing on with the Question, he began, “A bit of both, I can play well in groups, but can also go it alone if the need arises. I like to think of myself as a jack of all trades in some senses.” Though he hated to admit it to himself, he was struggling to work out whether Rainns liked him or not.

Rainns eyes were on his clipboard as his pen moved across the paper. “What are your weaknesses?” He asked, “anything that you need to improve on or any habits that may be counterproductive to your duty?” After asking the question the Lieutenant took another sip of water.

Ok here we go, the difficult questions, Kyle thought to himself. “I’d say my only weakness is that I tend not to take time for myself as much as I should. Always trying to help where I can I suppose.” Anders’ eyes flitted towards the replicator behind the desk, his mouth suddenly very dry. He cleared his throat, “Sorry, do you mind? I’m gagging for a drink!”

Rainns looked up from his clipboard, “By all means Cadet,” he motioned toward the replicator, “Get whatever you need.” He paused his line of questioning until the Cadet had returned to his seat.

Kyle nodded thankfully and approached the replicator, “Computer, one Detorian Fruit Swirl.” (OOC: A fancy way of saying Juice) He quickly swigged the drink and returned to the desk, feeling much more relaxed.

-Cadet Kyle Anders: Security-

“What are your career goals?” Rainns asked after Anders had taken his seat again.

LT JG Joseph Rainns
“Honestly,” Anders said, almost uncertainly, “I’d love my own command, but I know I’m gonna have to work damn hard to get there.” Kyle came to realise that his confidence was coming back to him.

Rainns nodded and wrote a small annotation in his notes, again, the Cadet reflected the chief’s own ambitions. “Well Cadet, hopefully you’ve got the work effort to get you a starship, but for now.” He said with a smile, “I want to make sure you can be trusted with the responsibility of your ship and crewmate’s lives, which based off our little chat, I think you might be able too.” Rainns put the pen and clipboard down on his desk, he placed his notes down in such an angle that if Anders dared to look at them he would see a clause in all caps, I HATE PIANO. “Do you have any comments or concerns Cadet?” Rainns said to Anders, judging him closely to see how Anders would react.

Kyle glanced down at the clipboard noticed the clause, held back a laugh, and said “Nothing too pressing at the moment Lieutenant,” he paused, daring himself to end with a cheeky comment, “I hope to see you in the Holodeck at my first performance.”

-Cadet Kyle Anders: Security-

Rainns gave a deadpan, “Excellent Cadet, if that is all, you are dismissed, go ahead and get your other check in’s done so you are ready for duty shortly.” He paused and added, “As for the Holodeck, don’t count on it.”
