Joseph walked with his hands behind his back. “Don’t worry about the escort, I would have sent another officer but I figured they would be on edge given everything thats happened. And I figured their anxiety might effect you.” Despite Fayth’s efforts, Joseph could tell she was uneasy about something, if by no other way than by how she was stammering to talk. “You weren’t thinking properly doc,” he responded after she had finished her litany. “You have a rare condition, so its not that unbelievable that you couldn’t distinguish a virus from your natural state.” In his mind, Joseph now understood why Fayth saw herself as such a threat to the ship now. Her condition certainly was a double-edged sword. “Your brother said the reason you may have been so fixated on the phaser range was because you were trying to find me.” Rainns said, “I’ll take that excuse, because,” He smiled in melancholic fashion, “that’s the only one that doesn’t make you sound like a psychopath.” As they approached her quarters Rainns added, “But if you ever want to fire a phaser, I’d be more than happy to show you up., if you are calling off the bet, which it sounds like you want too.”

He hadn’t wanted to come. He came to protect his officers. No he hadn’t said that, she had to stop she was putting her fear into his words and that wasn’t fair to either of them. She hated the fact she had scared the crew. She was fairly embarrassed about her brother’s conversation with Rainns. At the word psychopath Fayth visibly flinched. She would not act crazy she would not blubber. “By human standards I’m sure I am. My brother,” she paused for a moment, “He…he told me about his theory. I’m sorry he placed that on you. I believe he is probably correct. I would hope that shows rational action on my part under extreme stress to try and find help. I remember asking to use the phaser range, but not demanding a phaser. So I guess the scales don’t really tip back in my favor do they?”

“Oh…ummm well I am more than willing to take the challenge, Joseph? I shouldn’t have cheated that way, and if I hadn’t been sick I would have known that’s how it would work. Maybe I was trying to let you save yourself, let you get away from me,” it was a bad attempt at humor. “Unless you don’t,” better to just ask, “Unless you don’t want to be around me?” She rushed on, ” I understand. I told you once I could be considered a potential danger. But if you do I think it would be more fair, wouldn’t it? I can’t cheat at something I am so horrible at. I would really like to cancel that bet and start over. I’ll even concede victory and cook you dinner.” The idea that her subconscious considered Joseph a safe haven reminded her of the paper she was holding. She had finished before she had spoken to her brother. She wasn’t sure if she should show it to Rainns, no Joseph, she’d made this for him though she hadn’t realized it till she talked to her brother.

She stopped outside her door, “I wish I could share with you how I feel. I’m not supposed to use telepathy for a few more days, though how my doctors expect me to stop something I’ve never had complete control over is beyond me. Umm…so when I was in the hospital as a kid my doctors asked me to draw pictures of how I felt, at the time of the trauma. They suggested I do it again. Focusing on the exact moment. I…I drew this.” She handed him the paper she had been holding. She wasn’t sure if she should stay or go inside, indicision kept her in place.

Rainns unrolled the paper: It was a pencil sketch with detailed shadowing. A stormy sea full of lightening and giant waves. A single lighthouse took up most of the right side of the page. The storm seemed to stop before it reached the rocky shore where the lighthouse stood.

Rainns shook his head, “I’m not going to stop being your friend doc, don’t worry about. I’ll just need a contingency plan going forward that’s all.” He chuckled at his own joke, since he knew Fayth would not find that as funny. “And as for dinner, if you are offering, I’m never going to turn down a non-replicated meal.” He had expected Fayth to walk into her quarters, but when she hesitated and gave him the picture he smiled. “Looks like the painting I keep in my office. Thank you.” He looked up from the sketch. “There is something I suppose I should tell you, when I searched your quarters I went through a few of your private readings and writings, I hope you don’t mind, I promise I won’t make a habit out of it.”

Sharah chuckled just a bit, “You and your contingency plans.” It reminded her of dinner and that was one of the very few clear memories she had. “Well this time for dinner, no book, okay? I won’t stand you up.” She was tired and needed to sit down. She wasn’t sick, just hadn’t been up doing much yet. “Come inside.” She led the way in expecting him to follow. “The nice thing about you having been in here, I don’t have to worry if it impresses you. You’ve already seen it. ” She grinned and sat down. “As for searching my room,” She grabbed his hand and squeezed it, “I’m glad you did. If you hadn’t been searching for an answer I might still be sick, or worse. I’m sure going through your crew mates private things is not a pleasant job. You’re welcome to make a habit of searching mine as often as needed. If you think I’m not myself you have my permission. I’ll even show you where I keep my super secret journal where I write about how much I like you and how attractive you are.” She blushed really red. This was more her personality than before. Sharah loved to engage with people who could handle her quirkiness. She always wanted to joke with someone who understood her or at least tried to. “I did not just say that…did I?”

Rainns felt it would be rude to refuse the invite, so he stepped in, the familiarity of the room still made him feel guilty. As Sharah talked and held his hand he felt more and more comfortable. When she made the comment about her journal and started blushing he was slightly taken aback, she had never been straight forward with him like that before and he was caught off guard. Joseph like of social capabilities kicked in, as he had no idea how to respond to what Fayth had just said. “Uh I guess you did,” Joseph stammered, his usual calm and collected demeanor lieutenant falling to the wayside in exchange for an awkward and confused young man. “Not really sure what to say to that, ” he added.

Sharah just kind of looked at him at a loss for words. She was a very blunt person, due to simply reacting to what people really thought or felt, she was not great with social conventions and didn’t know what to do at that point. She had put them both on the spot. She knew what she wanted him to say, but only if he liked her too. She remembered Joseph had told her he was very introverted and not a very social person. She laughed just a little and ducked her head. She thought frantically for something to say, “Dinner. Yes I’m going to make you dinner. You have to tell me what your favorite meal is and I’ll make it.” She smiled and took a very deep breath. “I’ll cook it but if it is horrible you PROMISE to tell me and I’ll replicate something, okay?” She saw the items on her table, “Oh now that’s embarrassing.” She nodded to the table, she had wanted to get something for him, for his office, and couldn’t decide. He’d seen it and had to know they were for him. “Umm..” she stopped before she started rambling again, “you can say anything right now so I won’t start rambling again. Please.”
