“Please? My quarters are away from EVERYONE. No ONE comes down there. Please can I just go back to my quarters? I won’t go anywhere.” Sharah begged the on-duty doctor. He shook his head; over all she had been very calm about being stuck here for so long. “You’ve been cleared Cadet Fayth. You can go back to your quarters. But you are on VERY light duty for the next week, and although we can’t restrict your off-duty activities, we all strongly feel you should limit any activity for awhile until you adjust. There are also messages from your doctors on Betazed waiting for you.” The NE doctor handed Fayth a PaDD with all her instructions. It was late so not many people would be up. There was one thing she wanted to take with her, and she grabbed it. Before she could get out the door NE doctor stopped her. “Cadet Fayth, you have to wait for NE Nurse. She’ll escort you back to your quarters.” Sharah groaned and rolled her eyes. She waited as patiently as possible so they could leave. Her wry sense of humor bubbled up. The only thing she needed now was an official security escort for everyone to know how weird she was. When NE nurse started towards her, Sharah was half way out the door.
=^= Rainns to Fayth, just so you are aware, your written statement is more than satisfactory for my report, don’t worry about a follow up interview. Also this is a professional call, so the bet is still on.=^=

NE Nurse looked over at Fayth and grinned. Fayth blushed 5 shades of red. =^=Thank you Lt. I understand.=^=
NE Nurse started laughing. “You like HIM, Cadet.” Sharah shushed her. “I…umm....I’ve been sick, leave me alone.”
NE Nurse felt like after two weeks Sharah was her friend. So she decided she could get off work a little early at her expense. =^= NE Nurse to Lt. Rainns. Cadet Fayth needs an escort back to her quarters. We just want to make sure she doesn’t wander off. Is there anyone who could do that?=^=
Sharah would have happily disappeared into a bulkhead.Cadet Fayth, Doctor
=^= I can handle that nurse, I’ll be there shortly=^= Rainns responded. After several minutes the Chief of Security stepped into the sickbay. “Alright,” he said, spotting Fayth, “let’s get you out of here.” He was glad to see the doctor was feeling and looking better, and in hindsight he was embarrassed that he had invaded her privacy by scavenging through her private quarters while she was sick.

When Joseph walked into sickbay Sharah just stared. A part of her was afraid she had imagined him in her parasitic stupor. But he wasn’t and she was immensely happy to see him. When she caught herself staring she began to blush, again. What is wrong with me? I don’t even know if he still likes me. Seriously I walk into security demanding a phaser and I’m crazy as a fruit bat? Nope…that does Not work in my favor. NE Nurse smirked and nudged her, “Get going Cadet,” and she laughed at Sharah’s discomfort on her way back to her station.Sharah walked out into the cooridor feeling rather silly having an escort. Did everyone see her as that dangerous? Was she? She didn’t think so, not now. Mostly certainly before. Oh no…was she going to the brig? Focusing on one person’s thoughts still really hurt and she’d be right back in sickbay if she even looked like she was going to sneeze, so she wouldn’t do that.
“Um…uh” she took a breath, she was so nervous. “Thank you Lt. For” another breath, “For my escort.” That was not what she wanted to say. She was wringing her hands around a rolled piece of paper. She stopped, she was going to mess it up. Then she just started talking not even stopping to breath. “So for the sake of my recovery I wanted to ask about this bet. I remember daring you to do it, and you’ve mentioned it several times, but for the life of me I’m not sure why I would do that. Because it’s not fair to you, I could and probably was cheating the whole time. It’s not like I can stay away from anyone, I hear everything. I’m sure I remember telling you that. And so it really wasn’t a challenge for me, and it wasn’t fair of me to cheat. I love a challenge but that just seems so not like me to dare someone to…well I’m not really sure what I dared you to do or not do, or dared myself” she looked puzzled thinking about it as she continued to ramble on. She was wringing her hands trying to hide her nervousness. “And of course I really have to apologize. It was very stupid of me to even consider target practice. I mean I’m horrible, I really really am. It drives my brother crazy. But I should not have done that. I guess because I was so ill I obviously wasn’t processing correctly, but to put people at risk like that. And to not KNOW I was sick. What kind of doctor am I, that I can’t tell my own symptoms. And of course I don’t really need phaser proficiency to graduate. I’ll graduate but I wanted my away team certification when I did. And I was missing a weapon proficiency. Medical staff don’t have to score as high as other away team members, but we have to have it. ” The four gods of Betazed help her. She couldn’t stop talking. She remembered the last time he walked her to her quarters he held her hand, but she had been sick. She’d liked holding his hand, but was the appropriate now? “I should have asked for a tutor. It won’t happen again. I’m just going to stick to sickbay.” And she was off her mouth running again.

Joseph walked with his hands behind his back. “Don’t worry about the escort, I would have sent another officer but I figured they would be on edge given everything thats happened. And I figured their anxiety might effect you.” Despite Fayth’s efforts, Joseph could tell she was uneasy about something, if by no other way than by how she was stammering to talk. “You weren’t thinking properly doc,” he responded after she had finished her litany. “You have a rare condition, so its not that unbelievable that you couldn’t distinguish a virus from your natural state.” In his mind, Joseph now understood why Fayth saw herself as such a threat to the ship now. Her condition certainly was a double-edged sword. “Your brother said the reason you may have been so fixated on the phaser range was because you were trying to find me.” Rainns said, “I’ll take that excuse, because,” He smiled in melancholic fashion, “that’s the only one that doesn’t make you sound like a psychopath.” As they approached her quarters Rainns added, “But if you ever want to fire a phaser, I’d be more than happy to show you up., if you are calling off the bet, which it sounds like you want too.”

He hadn’t wanted to come. He came to protect his officers. No he hadn’t said that, she had to stop she was putting her fear into his words and that wasn’t fair to either of them. She hated the fact she had scared the crew. She was fairly embarrassed about her brother’s conversation with Rainns. At the word psychopath Fayth visibly flinched. She would not act crazy she would not blubber. “By human standards I’m sure I am. My brother,” she paused for a moment, “He…he told me about his theory. I’m sorry he placed that on you. I believe he is probably correct. I would hope that shows rational action on my part under extreme stress to try and find help. I remember asking to use the phaser range, but not demanding a phaser. So I guess the scales don’t really tip back in my favor do they?”
“Oh…ummm well I am more than willing to take the challenge, Joseph? I shouldn’t have cheated that way, and if I hadn’t been sick I would have known that’s how it would work. Maybe I was trying to let you save yourself, let you get away from me,” it was a bad attempt at humor. “Unless you don’t,” better to just ask, “Unless you don’t want to be around me?” She rushed on, ” I understand. I told you once I could be considered a potential danger. But if you do I think it would be more fair, wouldn’t it? I can’t cheat at something I am so horrible at. I would really like to cancel that bet and start over. I’ll even concede victory and cook you dinner.” The idea that her subconscious considered Joseph a safe haven reminded her of the paper she was holding. She had finished before she had spoken to her brother. She wasn’t sure if she should show it to Rainns, no Joseph, she’d made this for him though she hadn’t realized it till she talked to her brother.
She stopped outside her door, “I wish I could share with you how I feel. I’m not supposed to use telepathy for a few more days, though how my doctors expect me to stop something I’ve never had complete control over is beyond me. Umm…so when I was in the hospital as a kid my doctors asked me to draw pictures of how I felt, at the time of the trauma. They suggested I do it again. Focusing on the exact moment. I…I drew this.” She handed him the paper she had been holding. She wasn’t sure if she should stay or go inside, indicision kept her in place.
Rainns unrolled the paper: It was a pencil sketch with detailed shadowing. A stormy sea full of lightening and giant waves. A single lighthouse took up most of the right side of the page. The storm seemed to stop before it reached the rocky shore where the lighthouse stood.
