Tandra had been sitting not far from the other cadets, finishing her new soda. Yawning, she said, “Right, well, I’m really tired, so I’m gonna head out. Take a nap or something. Gotta report for duty in the morning.” And with that, she stood, smiled at Aili, waved at everyone else, and headed out of the holodeck.

As the holodeck door closed behind Mika, Greiss made a warm grin. “You know, she’s gotta be one of the kindest medical officers I’ve met.” Winston’s eyes darted about nervously as he surveyed for onlookers and other cadets that would interfere with his secretive disclosure. “I listened in on a conversation some higher ranking medical officers were having. From what I can tell, they’re considering her for promotion!” He tried to mask his exclamation through his whisper. “Seems like all of her good work is paying off in a big way.”

“She is.” Aili displayed child-like bemusement as her gaze lingered on the position of the doors for several second after they faded away, before snapping out of it and clocking the remainder of Winston’s words. “She is?!?! Does that mean she’ll be transferring soon?” She felt the warmth her hope for a future with Mika had generated slipping away by the moment.

“Could be,” Rainns commented, “I would image she doesn’t want to spend her whole career on a cadet ship.”

In that moment, Aili made the decision to put what she had just learned aside and to enjoy the time she could have with Tandra. No point in wasting what time we might have together fretting over it ending, she reckoned. Visible calm overcame her. She was proud, very proud, of her own maturity in that moment and ready to move forward with her fresh mindset. “So how do you guys spend your free time on the ship?”

Cadet McMorran - Science

“I’ve been working on retooling the electrical relays to run analog technology” Greiss showed off his calloused hands. “I know it’s a cadet ship, and that I won’t be staying long, but I thought, maybe the next cadet that uses my quarters might appreciate the convenience if they happen to share my specific affinity for clunky antiques.”
