As the office doors slid aside, Kyle entered the room, stepping forward with his hands behind his back in the formal manner of an officer standing to attention.

“Cadet Kyle Anders, reporting for duty sir.” He declared respectfully. Noticing the ice cubes on the desk, Kyle couldn’t help but feel as if he was melting himself.

Rainns tapped his pen on his clipboard, and motioned to the chair in front of the desk, “At ease Cadet, take a seat.” He watched the Cadet’s body language carefully to ascertain how the young man dealt with discomfort, thinking back to his first day when he was a spry young cadet walking in for his first check in.

Kyle relaxed slightly, “Thank you sir,” he said respectfully. He dropped into the chair, careful to remain alert as he awaited the first question.
