OOC: Just a little character development post, feel free to interact if you want but no pressure either way.

Lt. JG. Joseph Rainns was a practical and pragmatic young man. He always valued logic over emotions and facts over fiction. All that being said, he was born with and had maintained a creative spark inside him throughout his life. He didn’t like to channel it very often, as he preferred to be known for being a thinker not feeler. In most cases, he would itch his creative scratches in private through fiction writing and other literary means. Even though he respected visual art, a paint brush or any other artistic utensil was as foreign to him as a hand phaser was to a pakled scavenger. Another way he exercised his creative “wild” side was through expression, and even though the office was small and space was limited, he simply refused to work in a room bereft of character. He wanted the room to introduce himself to whoever was coming in. With all this in mind, Rainns had a small container which he was unloading, carefully placing items which he felt best optimized the limited space and portrayed an element of who he was. On his desk he placed an old 20th century antique globe of the planet Earth to showcase his fascination with old Earth history. Behind his desk he had placed a painted portrait of a lighthouse on the shore of a coastline, with its light shining brightly through the backdrop of a dark and tumultuous storm. The painting spoke to him in many ways. and he had always related himself to the lighthouse in some way. Additionally, he pulled out a pack of paper and pen and began and placed it on his desk, he preferred to write the old fashioned way whenever he could. After unloading almost of the boxes, contents, Rainns pondered whether he should assemble a small book case to place some of his favorite works of literature or to simply leave those in his quarters.

Cadet McMorran made haste as she left the turbolift and ventured down an unfamiliar corridor. No matter, they all looked the same, and she knew the layout of the ship well, in theory, by this point. She was due on duty in ten minutes but had a self-imposed appointment she had to attend to first. Arriving at her destination, she pressed the control which sounded the door chime. Rainns heard the alert just as he was considering the inclusion of bookcases in his interior design plans.

“Come in” Rainns responded to the chime, looking over his belongings.

The office doors parted and McMorran emerged through their parting. She gently flicked her red hair from where it was intruding on her eye, her composure having been shaken up during her speed walk. A faint gleam of sweat had grown across her features. “Lieutenant. I wanted to come down and give you my congratulations on your new position personally.” Aili examined the space and the decorations which were just beginning to fill it with interest. Within moments her attention had become transfixed on the painting behind his desk, her gaze lingering in a stare rather than politely returning it to Rainns as she had intended.

“Thank you Cadet.” Rainns smiled as Aili was distracted by the painting behind his desk. “Yep, it’s a pretty great piece of art. I like to think it relfects who I am as a person.”

“Oh really?” McMorran grinned, her attention returning to the security chief. Having met him when he was still a cadet and having had personal conversations with him, as brief as they may have been, Aili felt she had some access to be more personal with him than she would with other superior officers. “So you see yourself as the light in the darkess?” she asked with a sly and teasing grin. Pushing into a dramatic tone, she continued. “The one man standing tall against the coming storm!”

Rainns smile grew into a grin as he placed his box on the desk, “Both actually Ms. McMoran, it depends on the day. Sometimes I feel like I have to be to guide others through the darkness of fear and indecisiveness and other days I feel like I must stand alone against forces that are strong and benevolent, I value both roles equally, but I prefer the second.”
