Joseph heaved a breath of doubt, under normal circumstances we wouldn’t dare answer somebody else’s comm signal, but, her brother might be able to give him some clues as to what happened before and after. He sat down at her desk and answered the message, introducing himself before Andrew could speak. “Hello, I’m Chief of Security Joseph Rainns of the USS Challenger, your sister is in sickbay, she appears to have suffered a mental breakdown, I am currently conducting an inquiry into the event, I apologize for answering but I feel you should be made aware of the situation.” After saying this Rainns realized his mouth was dry and his palms were slightly sweaty.L.T. A betazoid man, about 5 years older than Sharah appears on the screen, “Sharah it’s about time, what is up with you? Do you have any idea…” Andrew stops realizing first that Rainns is NOT his sister, and second Rainns had quite a bit to say. “A mental break down? Sharah? Are you sure?” Andrew looks like his legs were knocked out from under him. “Do you know from what? Was her paracortex over stimulated, did she suffer some kind of psychic trauma?” Andrew rubs his face with both hands. “She’s…she’s been strange the last two weeks. We talk every or write every day. She’s been cutting conversations short, her letters have been vague. At first I thought it was nothing. She can do that when she’s really focused on a research project, but,” he pauses to ask again, “What happened when she had her break down, right at that moment?”
Lt Cmdr. Andrew Fayth, COS Outpost 59Rainns shook his head, ” I have no clue at the moment, but the doctors in sickbay are tending to it right now, hopefully they can give diagnosis soon. As to what she did when she broke down? She just mumbled some incoherent words and then went down. ” Rainns paused for a second, “Doesn’t her research project has something to do with folk medicine? Maybe that has something to do with it.” In his head another piece fit into place, he just hoped the puzzle he was assembling was going to form the correct picture.

Andrew shook his head and raised a single eyebrow, “Really you have no idea? Lt Rainns you don’t lie well and you aren’t tell me what you know. Before you take offense, as COS I’m sure you’d ask the same thing if you were in my shoes. Where was she when she was found, what was she attempting to do? Surely you know at least where she was and someone had to have seen her. I want to help, but you have to tell me. It will take me 5 days to get out there if I can find the right transport, and she could be much worse by then. If you tell me, perhaps, I can give some insight into what she was doing. What has she been doing over the last several days? How has she been acting. I know she is new on board so there is no norm, but I know Sharah’s norm. Yes she researches folk medicine. It is possible she took something, but there would be records. Search her things. Sharah is very scientific, she wouldn’t take anything randomly and not record it to determine the effects. Anything she might have taken would show up on a medical scan.
Lt Cmdr. Andrew Fayth, COS Outpost 59
Rainns took a deep breath, ” Lt. Cmdr. Fayth, I can promise you I do not know what is wrong with her, if I did, I would absolutely tell you, but I don’t. She was in one of the security offices deck 7 when she collapsed, she wanted to go to a phaser range apparently, and was looking to get clearance, I’ve been going through her journals and it mentions some sort of mediation she seemed to be trying. I honestly don’t know anymore than that, but if I had to guess, I’d say whatever mental gymnastics she was attempting to do didn’t work the way she wanted.”

“A phaser?” Andrew pinched the bridge of his nose. “As one security chief to another, that would scare the life out of me. The idea of my sister erratic and a phaser in her hand, would scare anyone. What you have to understand, though, is we drilled her in contingency plans. If one emotion were to overwhelm her so she couldn’t think, we worked with her to have a safe outlet. If she was looking for a phaser and target practice, I would wager she was feeling anger/rage she was looking for a safe outlet. A phaser wouldn’t be my first choice, but she may not have been aware of other options on the ship.” Here he stops and looks at Joseph, “I know about you, Joseph Rainns. Sharah told me.” Andrew let’s that sit for a minute. “I don’t want to influence your judgement, but Sharah’s mind works fast and her subconcious is crazy brilliant too. It’s equally likely that her brain came up with a reason to find you. She was in severe distress and needed someone she trusted, and that person was you.” Andrew sighed, “Of course it’s all speculation until she wakes up.”
“Mental gymnastics? That sounds erratic for Sharah. You have to understand, she was at Academy a year and a half before we had a hint that it was too much for her. Sharah’s doctor contacted me to come visit her. She was in an awful state. She was totally overwhelmed, but no where near a mental breakdown. She hadn’t told anyone how bad it was and she managed to cope with it ALONE for a year and half. She, well let’s say there were a lot more people at the Academy than on your ship. The number of people on your ship should not overload her like that. Everyone back home kept telling her she couldn’t do it, and Sharah’s stubborn. It doesn’t seem like it because she always seems to have her mind elsewhere. She appears flighty, but it’s just all the input. She is really smart and figured she could do it alone. She’s also really strong. She may have been nervous about her first assignment, but to go off and change her strategy plan without talking to anyone, I doubt that. I check in with her every day since then. There were people in her class that didn’t like her. Made a pariah out of her, but she didn’t stop. She didn’t give up and she certainly didn’t go off doing mental gymnastics and asking for phasers. I knew something was wrong when she didn’t write or answer my calls, but I just was hoping she was enjoying her first tour of duty. There are illnesses that affect Betazoid telepathy, it’s also possible you have a rogue telepath on board who would rather Sharah not know what they are up to. There is no way to know before she wakes up.”
Lt Cmdr Andrew Fayth, COS Outpost 59Rainns let all that Fayth had said sink in before he responded, “I doubt we have some rogue agent running aboard the ship, I already reviewed the internal sensor data and there’s nothing there to suggest this was deliberate. The only two things I have to work with right now is this new meditation Sharah was using and the patients whom she saw minutes before she became disorientated. I believe somehow she absorbed some of their emotions, or swapped their moods in someway, based on what the child who she treated just told me, and I checked them both to see if either patient who saw Sharah had a telepathic background, they do not.”
L.T. J.G. Joseph Rainns- COS
Andrew thought long before he answered. “I doubt too there is a rogue agent on your ship. There isn’t much they would gain from Cadets. A new meditation practice wouldn’t necessarily cause this, but what caused her to need to change her practice? She’s been using the same techniques since she was 15. What suddenly changed?
What if a change in her meditation routine is a symptom, not a cause?” Andrew drummed his fingers on his desk. “A child? That’s something Sharah would do, protect a child from the hurt she felt. I don’t know how she does it, it doesn’t make sense to me how she calms and soothes her patients. Sharah went through a lot of trauma as a small child, she wouldn’t have handled knowing another child hurt like she did. But one child sending her over the edge? Maybe, if the child was hurt enough or the child’s life was in danger. Again what if that is a symptom and not a cause, or maybe it is. Is there anyone on board who could try to get through to her? Try and get her to answer some questions? I’m sorry I haven’t helped a whole lot have I. “
Lt Cmdr Andrew Fayth, COS“If they are just symptoms of a larger problem,” Rainns responded, “than it is the problem that started two weeks ago when she first came onboard, that is when her notes get less and less detailed and her issues started becoming more and more difficult for her to handle.”

Andrew sits up straight in his chair and starts going through something on a PaDD. “20 days ago Sharah was on the transport ship. She was supposed to call me, but I got a letter instead. She said she wasn’t feeling well. Dizzy, nauseated and she didn’t seem to find a cause. She though perhaps it was because she hadn’t been in deep space for awhile. She said she was having trouble concentrating and sleeping because she felt so sick.” Andrew looked back at Rainns with another raised eyebrow. “I never asked her about it again.”
Lt Cmdr Andrew Fayth, COS“Well she seems to be getting sick quite a bit these days.” Rainns replied, “In almost all of our…” He paused to find the right word. “Interactions, she has ended the night in a state of discomfort. I’m nearly positive that’s connected in some way.”
L.T. J.G. Joseph Rainns- COS
“Sharah’s gifts are all or nothing, she needs a LOT of recharge time. She might be exhausted but not usually sick. She confided in me that she found,” he searched for the right vague term to use, “a ‘friend’ who could share thoughts with her. She was worried about that person that the prolonged activity might cause damage to them. Has anyone been found with a fried brain recently?” Andrew sighs, “Lt. Raines, I don’t want to put you on the spot, but does it get worse the more she engages in telepathy? And for her or this ‘friend?’ Because if it’s her we can assume that there is some outside cause to her illness. If it was her mind finally cracking from the strain, as so many like her have had happen, this friend, would already be dead.”
Lt Cmdr Andrew Fayth, COS“Well, he’s not dead,” Rainns replied. What had begun as a very serious conversation had somehow been transformed into an awkward conversation that bordered on satirical if the situation were not so grim. “I’m not ruling out outside interference, but if there is any, I can’t prove it right now, there are no other telepaths aboard that I am aware of at this time.”
L.T. J.G. Joseph Rainns- COS
Andrew wasn’t too thrilled about discussing his sister’s personal life, but for her he would do anything, “Not all outside influences are people. There are illnesses that affect Betazoid telepathy. Has anyone checked? I’m sorry you’re not a doctor and I’m sure your doctor has. I’m just worried. “
Joseph’s nerves/distress/awkward situation must have penetrated Sharah’s fog because she was suddenly awake, very feverish, but aware something was going on and aware she was in sickbay. ‘Joseph? How did I get here?’
Cadet Fayth, Doctor“I’ll contact you if anything else comes up Cmdr. Fayth, but for now the best thing for me to do is to simply go back to investigating the area.” Rainns said, so deep in thought he almost Sharah’s voice. ‘You had some sort of mental collapse last night, we brought you in to sickbay to recover.’
L.T. J.G. Joseph Rainns- COS
Andrew nodded, “Thank you Lt Rainns. Oh and if you really want to know if she’s okay, or just want to mess with her sometime, tell her I’m coming to the ship.” Andrew signed off.
Sharah processed the information, ‘You were here earlier, asking me questions. It’s hard to talk this way. Like heavy clay.’ There was nothing for a moment and perhaps she had fallen asleep again, ‘am…am I drugged?’
Cadet Fayth, Doctor“Will do,” Rainns signed off. ‘There is a sedative in your system yes, I’ve been going through your quarters to figure out whats happening to you.’ Rainns began to get up and make his way back to sickbay.
L.T. J.G. Joseph Rainns- COS
Sharah seemed to accept that and became quiet again. When Rainns returned to sick bay she was not okay. She seemed to be scratching at her head, clawing was more the word. Her heart rate was elevated again as well as her respiration. The doctor and nurse were arguing over what to give her. “I can’t give her more. Any more and it could cause serious damage,” the NE doctor snapped at NE nurse. Obviously Sharah had woken up before she was supposed to. “Lt. Rainns, did you find anything?” She gave Sharah another dose of something.
