As they began to talk Rainns was taking notes furiously on the padd, almost knocking it out of his hand as he typed. After he finished he smiled at the two, “Other than tell stories, did Dr. Fayth do anything else to “take” the anger away?” Rainns asked Jill, he felt sure that somehow Fayth had taken the little girls emotion on her herself, but he could not figure if this an a conscious of subconscious act.

Jill scrunched up her little face and thought, “She told me it was going to be okay, and that she understood why I was mad. She said, ‘I get mad too, and it’s hard because it feels like you can’t do anything about it, so you have to let it go, and if I let it go right now I won’t have to feel it anymore.’ Then she told me about her brother, and when I got scared because she got this really big machine she told me that knowing all about it would make me feel better. She let me hold it and ask all kinds of questions.” Jane stopped her sister, “Even when she wasn’t talking to Jill, she was still talking, just under her breath. I thought it was because she was trying to remember everything, nerves from being a Cadet, ya know? Do you think she did something else to my sister?” Jane pulled Jill into a hug. Something wasn’t right if the Chief of Security was investigating the doctor.

“When you said she was talking, did hear what she was saying at all?” Rainns asked, first rule of questioning was to never answer a question yourself, he couldn’t confirm or deny anything the doctor had done, so he simply chose to continue with his line of questions.

Jane shook her head, “It sounded like little platitudes to keep Jill calm.” Jill giggles and shook her head, “She was silly. ‘No anger, no mad, all happy, no sad.’ ‘I’m angry at you it’s not fair!’ She sounded like she was using voices to tell a story and all the people were mad and then they learned not to be.”
Jill was rather proud of herself for remembering all of that.

“Thank you,” Rainns said, finishing typing on the PaDD. He looked up at Jane. “ I don’t believe the doctor has done anything wrong here ma’am. This is simply an inquiry which you have both been very helpful in my completion of, Thank you very much.” Rainns made sure to keep a record of both their names in his log should he need to meet with them again. After talking with the two, he decided to see if Fayth was conscious.

Sharah wasn’t totally awake, the sedative keeping her really unaware, but it was starting to wear off. She opened her eyes a little and then closed them, everything was fuzzy. She was trying to remember where she was and why. She could feel Joseph somewhere near by and he seemed angry, and that made her very uneasy, he didn’t get angry. She shook her head creating a wave of dizziness....no not angry…serious? Very serious. ‘What’s wrong? What happened?’ where last night her voice, though slow to form was clear and her thoughts focused. Today she was erratic and instead of slow to form from the sedative she had to fight for each thought.
Cadet Fayth, Doctor

Joseph walked up to where Fayth lay, and saw she had still not fully recuperated from her treatments. ‘You scared us’, he replied, ‘You had what I can only describe as a complete mental breakdown, your dam completely broke open.’ He paused for a moment, and continued, ‘I have to launch an inquiry to determine what happened, because you came into the security officer asking for a phaser, I just interviewed the patients you treated just before you left sickbay, but I need to hear from you what happened when you treated a little girl named Jane.’

L.T. J.G. Joseph Rainns- COS

‘Dams?....’ She struggled to pull the information from her head, ‘phaser…tar’ she disappears for a moment. Her mind not nearly as clear as it should be. After the treatment and rest she should be better. ‘Rage…so much’ you get an image of the phaser range, Sharah trying to shoot the targets, then the image and her voice faded again. ‘Jane…leg?’ You can only feel her need to help her, ‘so scared.’ The pieces fit together finally after several more minutes. She opens her eyes to try and look at Rainns. ‘Her…rage..like mine…wanted to focus…’ it was too hard to keep talking, she stopped for awhile. “Just wanted…target practice.’ she had to pull the words slowly, Rainns realized she had become clammy and her heart race had increased.

Cadet Fayth, Doctor

“Nurse?” Rainns called out, “Is this a good thing?” he pointed to the monitor that displayed Fayth’s heartbeat. “Cause it looks like her heart rate is increasing.” It was clear to Rainns that Fayth was in no condition to answer any questions, he simply stepped away from the bio bed to let the nurse come over and check on Sharah. He decided the best approach would be to investigate other avenues at the present moment, such as the possibility that this was not an accident.

NE nurse comes running over. “No, that shouldn’t be happening. She’s also spiking a fever.” She called another doctor over who gave Sharah another sedative to lower her heart rate and something for the fever, “We need Dr Mika.” The doctor looked right at Rainns. “Lt. can you go check her quarters? Anything can help, where she’s been, what she ate, who’s she been around. We all need to be here. We can’t go. We need to find out what’s going on. I’m sure Lt. Mika would ask you, she’s been researching, NE Nurse went to get her. I’ll let you know if we find anything.”
‘Joseph?’ she had one moment of clarity. She was scared but knew something was terribly wrong with herself. Then she fell unconscious again.

“I was just heading that way, if you excuse me ,” Rainns began heading towards the exit when he heard Sharah’s call, ‘yes?’ he asked, but when all heard was silence he frowned and continued exiting the room, “Keep me updated nurse” he called back as he left the sickbay. Walking down the corridor he had an idea, he held his padd up and accessed the ship’s internal sensors from the previous, seeing if the internal sensors picked anything unusual up around the time of the incident. The Lieutenant reviewed the records as he entered a turbolift. “Deck 9” he ordered, and the doors closed with a swish.

The sensors did not register anything unusual at the time of Sharah’s collapse.
Cadet Sharah, Doctor

Arriving at Sharah’s quarters, Rainns used his command codes to override the lockout on the Door and entered her quarters. As diligently and carefully as he could, he began looking around for anything that seemed not belong or be out of place in the room.

Upon entering Sharah’s quarters Rainns noticed that it is very net. It appears sparse and undecorated at first glance, but he realizes that everything has a place. A reflection of how she wishes her inner life was. There was music playing, instrumental but very complex. Multiple melodies and tempos. Oddly soothing but with an underlying edge to it.
On her desk are several PaDDs. Investigating them shows an array of research. Some PaDDs contain notes on exobiology and medical history of those cultures, another has a compilation of historical cures that are still viable. The last contains a file named “Cure.” The last PaDD is a collection of life histories and memoirs of several seemingly normal Betazoids, except for one thing. They all were extreme telepaths like Sharah. She had marked details in each and then on another page had a list of what she had marked. On her view screen was a large map of Betazoid. The last thing she wrote on the PaDD was “HOME??”, a word she had marked several times in the memoirs. On her comm screen was a letter waiting to be read, from an Andrew Fayth. ‘Sharah, two weeks, and no word from you. This isn’t funny. You said you were having a hard time. You’d better be dying for scaring me like this, little sister. If I don’t hear from you soon, I’m contacting your department head while I’m on the way to your ship. Do you understand me? Please call me. Love, Andrew.” He’s chief of security of an outpost in sector 5.
Moving on Rainns found no food containers but downloaded what she had requested from the replicator. The matter recycler was empty as well. There were several items on the coffee table. A beautifully carved chess set, copies of the newest who-done-it holonovels, a copy of Sun Tzu’s Art of War, and paper copy of 1984. There was a single empty gift box with a note, “Thank you for letting me be me, for accepting my differences. Here is something for you to enjoy while being yourself. -Sharah’
Her bedroom was like the rest of her quarters, neat, sparse, free of clutter. She had several books on her bedside table all with bookmarks, none of them finished. The alpha wave stimulator lay on the bed side table as well. Dr. Mika would be able to tell if Sharah had used it recently. Also next to her bed was her schedule.
0645 breakfast in mess hall. Less people, easier to adjust
0730 Mok’Bara class in the gymnasium filter the static during meditation.
0900 meet Ashlyn for practice. Dams need adjustment.
1130 lunch, too crowded in mess hall still, eat in my quarters.
1230 to 1900 duty shift.
2200 meditation. Empty the dams
There were also notes about how she was sleeping, if she used any medicines or extra help. It appeared she had been keeping those notes since she started at the academy. The last two days had notations indicating she was having trouble sleeping, with a note to talk to Lt. Mika. Older notes from the Academy are very detailed, but without the focus on controlling her gift, that seems to have started on her way to Challenger. About two days into her trip she began to record more instances of lack of sleep, dizziness, and confusion.

Cadet Fayth, Doctor

Rainns felt intense sympathy upon coming across all of the belongings Fayth kept in her quarters, the more he looked over her notes and schedules however, the more convinced he was that there was no outside interference here, that this was strictly an issue with Fayth herself. He looked on her schedule “Ashlyn for practice,” he read out loud to nobody, the pieces in his head began to take shape. Her lack of sleep appeared to have coincided with this “dam” approach she had been using to contain all of here telepathic abilities it seemed. He began studying the Doctor’s annotations that she had made referring to other Betazoids, in particular looking to see if she had copied some form of treatment that one of them had used.

L.T. J.G. Joseph Rainns- COS

As Joseph continued to examine the notes, he saw something amiss. Her notes from the academy, her routines were impressive, detailed, impressively detailed. After about two days on the transport her notes became short, vague and lacking compared to before. It didn’t matter what the notes were on. Anything dated prior to departure reflected a very brilliant mind, full of passion and dedication. Her notes dated afterwards were, well sad and disappointing. Sharah had thousands of terabytes of data on trying to find a cure for herself, but it would take days to examine it all. While he was looking through it Sharah’s notes her comm panel began to flash. It was an incoming message from her brother, Andrew Fayth.
