“Evening! And thanks!” She said, and her smile widened. “I’ve been waiting… rather impatiently all day. I, ah, probably could’ve been more focused on duty today, but, oh well, right?” She said. She was still pretty nervous, but determined to act like her normal self. It’s not like we haven’t hung out before. Yeah, it’s a date this time but it’s really no different, right? she thought, trying to allow herself to relax. She still really wanted this date to go well, and she had to keep reminding herself, that the more nervous she was, the worse it would likely go. She noticed the music just then, and said, “I like the music choice, too.”

“Ah”, Aili glanced back at the device, “to be honest I only had two records with me. It was either this or 22nd century jazz and… bleugh.” She shook her head as if to shake off something horrible, her hair falling in her face as she did so. Elegant, Aili, she scolded herself. Brushing her locks out of her eyes, she gestured to the table. “Please! Sit.” She pulled the chair nearest to Tandra out from the table and swivelled it slightly in the other woman’s direction.

Tandra took her seat, pulling the chair into the table as she sat. “So. What’re we eating?” she asked, rather enthusiastically, as she looked up at Aili. “I hope it’s something good!” Even if it wasn’t, Tandra planned on pretending it was.

As Aili assisted in sliding her chair forward, Tandra could pick up a natural smelling piny scent on her. “Ah, it’s no fun if I tell in advance.” Now that Tandra was sat at the table, she could see a corner of the room she couldn’t from the door. A thin portable heating unit was placed on a worksurface, beside where a replicator was fixed in the wall, and various pots, pans and chopping boards were strewn across it. A variety of foody smells, particularly a fishy one, found their way to Tandra’s nostrels once the piny-ness of Aili had faded.

Rounding the table again, Aili sat at the other chair which was roughly a quarter of the arc of the circular table away. A flowry tablecloth covered the surface. In its centre, a thick wax candle burned in small circular metal dish in which wax melted was just beginning to collect. Behind it sat a tall glass bottle filled with a golden liquid. Aili lifted two fancy looking glasses from behind the bottle, glasses which bulged out towards their base, and placed one before each of them. Lifting the bottle and presenting it in both hands, she asked Tandra with a pert smile: “Whisky? Just a dram.”

“Absolutely. Just a bit though,” Mika said. “Something fishy?” She asked, catching a rather large whiff of fish.

“Perhaps…” Aili smirked and raised her eyebrows, before undoing the seal on the bottle. “I brought this with me from home. This is first non-sythehol I’ve had since coming on board, how about you?” Reaching forwards and lifting and tilting Tandra’s glass due to the fullness of the bottle, Aili gently allowed some of the drink to tip into it. Once the glass was filled up by an inch or so she retracted the bottle and slid the glass back to Tandra, before pouring some for herself.

“I didn’t think to bring any. Synthehol all the way, right? ..Oh, thanks,” Tandra said, adding the last part as Aili filled her glass part the way. She gave a small yawn, which she tried and failed to stop before it happened. “Sorry. I was on duty today. Long shift,” she said, not wanting Aili to think she was bored. She was most definitely not bored.

“Well”, Aili tilted her head, “you made it through the difficulty of my absence, enjoy the reward.” *Oh Aili that just sounds self-important.” Keen not to leave Tandra time to dwell on that turn of phrase, she thought up new words to sweep it away. “You’re welcome to have a lie down if needs must…” She raised her glass. “Sláinte! That means cheers!” A moment later she downed her drink, before bringing the glass back to the table with a smack.

Mika grinned. “The reward would be worth the longest, hardest shift of my career.” She said. And the she heard the next thing Aili had to say, and she jumped just a little. “What? No! No way! No need for that!” She said quickly, shaking her head and waving her hands in a no way fashion. Nice going, Mika, she thinks you’d rather sleep than be here. She thought, internally frowning. Raising her glass with Aili, she said, “Well then, cheers!” And she downed the drink, smacking the glass to the table a few seconds after Aili.
