It had been two days since his encounter with Cadet Fayth, and Rainns had decided to plan for dinner after her shift ended that day at 1900 hours. He had messaged her that morning before starting his shift, and had spent the day completing his tasks and distracting himself from thoughts about the upcoming evening. He had heavily considered simply leaving his uniform on, but decided against it. He walked into the mess hall exactly five minutes before the agreed upon time, wearing a collared shirt and khaki pants, nothing fancy, but comfortable and out of uniform. He found a table that was unoccupied and in the corner, and taking a seat there he pulled out a padd and began reading for a few minutes to await Fayth’s arrival. He was slightly anxious, but not really, ‘Its not a date’ he told himself, ‘don’t freak out’. This would be his first one on one dinner he had with a woman since his breakup a few months prior, but he refused to let that fact bother him. Pulling up the classic earth novel 1984, the cadet simply read and waited for his counterpart to arrive.

Sharah had been worrying over this for the last few days. She wasn’t sure how to take Joseph’s comment about her reading his mind. Had it upset him, did the ‘cool’ factor wear off. Surely not if he still wanted to have dinner? She didn’t want to be late, but this was a social meeting, not work. She didn’t think a uniform would be appropriate. She left sickbay quickly and then went back to her quarters to change. She choose a long sleeve blouse and a peasant skirt. What she was most comfortable in.

She entered the mess hall and looked around. She was nervous to be back in such a social area. But it was late, after her shift and not many people were there. She looked around and saw Joseph at a corner table and walked over. He was reading on a PaDD. Perhaps he thought she wouldn’t show up.
She loved to read, and was curious if it was work related or for fun. “Anything interesting?” she asked as she walked over.
Cadet Fayth, Doctor

Out of the corner of his, Joseph spotted Fayth enter the room, and he was silently relieved, as he had been worried that he might simply be reading all night alone. When she made her way to his table he looked up and took in her appearance, she looked quite lovely and he was glad he had changed out of his uniform. “It’s 1984,” he responded, turning the padd so that she could see it, “Classic earth novel about individuality, probably my favorite book.” He smiled, “Now that you are here though, I can get some food.” He stood up and motioned toward the replicators, “after you.”

Sharah looked, “I read it once. Many year ago. I remember being in awe of the cultural expectations expressed in the novel.” She walked over to the replicator and ordered Oskoid and Jestral Tea. Traditional Betazoid dishes. She was feeling a little nostalgic for home. She took her tray back over to the table and sat down. She took the time to notice that Joseph looked more relaxed in civilian clothing than he did in his uniform at the mixer. The color of the shirt suited him. She wasn’t sure what to say so she asked the first thing on her mind, “Why security?”

Cadet Fayth, Doctor

Joseph retrieved a plate of ravioli from the replicator and took a seat at the table. He took a bite of food and was about to ask a question when Fayth asked her own. Joseph finished his bite and replied. “Well, I want to help people, and I think the best way to do that is to keep them safe. I was raised to believe that evil is a real thing that exists in this world and some people are called to confront it so evil does not consume a group or society.” He paused briefly, “In security, I am tasked with protecting every single person’s life onboard this ship from harm and evil. It is a sacred responsibility that I feel I am best able to perform due to my skills and abilities. Not every life form we meet is going to shake our hand and smile, a few might frown and shoot at us, when that happens, I want to be there to protect my friends and crewmates.” Joseph took another bite and digested it. “How about you? what drew you to medicine?”
