Mika listened closely, nodding occasionally. Though Fayth did ramble just a tad, Mika was actually enjoying listening to her, and felt no need to stop her. “I see. And I agree, it is quite important to know how to treat people without a full sickbay or hospital. So, with that in mind, what were you planning on specializing in? Any ideas?” She asked, leaning back in her chair. She still had yet to figure out just how to do these interviews, but so far she was pretty pleased with how it was going.

Sharah thought, “I haven’t actually thought about that. I would really like to experiment with chemical compositions of raw materials found on different planets to look at more organic medicines and techniques. To help develop a reference to help those in extreme or survival situations, though if they are without technology a reference might be very difficult. The Academy should really offer a course like that in survival training. I mean we have a basic first aid course for all medical personnel, but not something that everyone is required to take. It really could help so many people if they are having to wait for medical assistance or rescue. Of course I am really interested in exobiology but that subject is so examined over and over again I’m not sure I would provide anything new to the field.” And without thinking about what she said next her next thought just tumbled out. “I definitely don’t want to specialize in surgery.”

Mika had been about to reply when Fayth blurted out her final thought, and then Mika chuckled. “Not a fan huh?” She said, grinning. Personally Mika didn’t mind surgery, though it was not her specialty. She had a double specialty in Emergency medicine and Internal Medicine, specifically Immunology. And, because of these specific specialties, she was also rather interested in Sharah’s topic of how to handle ill-equipped emergency situations. “It may be a good idea, but you can only take so many classes. Got to pick and choose. What they could do instead, perhaps, is a voluntary but recommended training course.” She said, after a moment of thought about the topic.

Lt Mika was her DH…”Actually I like surgery and I’m decent at it. Not the best by any means, but due to my…affliction it is very difficult for me. If the staff around me is too nervous or doubtful, unfocused it could cause me to make fatal mistakes. So I’ve tried to stay away from it as much as possible.” Looking rather ashamed she continued, “I’m sure my professors agree. There was…an incident at the Academy. No one was hurt, but thank goodness Dr. Varness was there. I’ve stayed away since.” If you look into her Academy files you will see her surgical procedures were spot on during all labs and simulations. Sharah had to step in for a severely injured classmate during a lab accident. She was simply the first responder, but her own nerves, fear, and those of everyone around her caused a ‘mental’ gray out where she was unable to perform. Her teachers and Academy counselor felt that the reaction was akin to any first year student being put in the situation, but she had felt the extreme stress of surgery was not an area that ethically she should engage in. “I wold love to research more about survival medicine/emergency medicine/ancient medicine whatever you would call it. I’m not sure what a good term would be.” Sharah felt proud of herself for telling Lt. Mika the truth, though she was still unsure of how others will react to her.

Cadet Fayth, Doctor

Mika nodded. “I see. Well, everyone’s got strengths, and weaknesses.” She said. “I would encourage you to do so. Always learning is always a good thing,” She continued. She was sure Sharah would do fine. The Cadet seemed quite determined, and her Academy teachers had nothing but praise for her in her file. “Any other questions or concerns or anything else you’d like to talk about?” She asked.

Sharah shook her head, “Honestly I just want to know when I can get to work. I am really excited to get experience.”
Cadet Fayth, Doctor

Mika nodded, smiling. “Well, I don’t think I’ve anything else for you right now, so on you go to your last evaluation. And Cadet Fayth? If you ever need anything, I’m always available to help you, alright?”

“Thanks Lt.” Sharah headed out to her next appt. The ship’s counselor. She was eager to meet him as she would probably be spending time there regularly.
