OOC: Since the location changed from the Sickbay to the CMO’s Office, I updated the topic with the new location.

Mika paused in the doorway to the office. The office was rather plain, and fairly small. Only the bare essentials sat on the desk, which faced towards the door. The walls were empty. There was a small sofa in the room, a leftover from the previous CMO. The rest of the office was currently empty. She hadn’t had a chance to do anything with it yet. Though, if she had, she had no idea what she would’ve done with it. She still saw it as Lieutenant Tija’s office, and quite honestly, to change it felt almost wrong, like she’d get in trouble. She missed having the more experienced doctor around, and often felt way too inexperienced for the position.

But she was also proud. Proud she’d done well enough to be able to call it her office. Proud that she was now in the position to be on the other side of the big desk, even if that prospect made her quite nervous. She’d make her old mentor proud of her, she knew she would. And with that thought, she headed into the office, picking one of the two chairs on the near side of the desk, and sat down, gesturing for Cadet Fayth to take the other.

“So.” She said, and then another long pause followed, as Mika decided how to begin. Nervousness made it hard to think. Caused her mind to wander. She wondered if she seemed very… chief officer-y. She guessed probably not. Refocusing her mind once again, she returned her attention to Fayth. “What made you choose Starfleet? What made you want to do medicine on a ship?” She said finally, deciding that was the best way to get their conversation started. She hoped future interviews went smoother.

Sharah liked that the office was empty. She was curious to see how the Lt would decorate the office to reflect her personality. She also liked that the office had been emptied from the previous CMO. She thought that meant that Lt. Mika wanted to be her own officer not shadowed by her predecessor. She sat down in the chair Mika offered. “Oh, well I guess Star Fleet was an after though to medicine. I have always enjoyed helping people. I have always been fascinated by how the body systems were designed to work together so flawlessly. I was 5 when I realized that we all didn’t come from the same place, but yet we are very similar in basic makeup and design and I wanted to know if other species bodies worked the same way mine did. I drove the doctors and nurses crazy with questions.” Sharah smiled remembering buzzing the nurses and doctors constantly with questions. Once she had been allowed out of her room she started bugging the patients too. “That led me to Star Fleet eventually. Where else can I learn about all the species that make up our existence? My real passion is natural medicine though. I mean, how did our ancestors do it without our technology? I feel like their methods are still valid, because they worked, back then, and so they must work now too. Most people look at me like I’m crazy, but if an away team is stuck somewhere, or a new colony doesn’t have the supplies they need, they eat something native that is poisonous, you have to know about natural remedies to be able to figure out what the natural predator for that animal, or plant, or virus would be. Most away teams don’t even take a medic with them unless they already know there are injured on the planet. So what do they do without a med kit? They have to know how to use what is around them.” Sharah was starting to ramble on about examples of different ways doctors or colonists had to find ways to take care of medical emergencies their technology (or lack of) wasn’t the solution. It was obvious she could go on for hours about the topic.

OOC: So, I think it’s time for a snip. Basically, we make the thread shorter by removing the oldest posts, and only leaving 2 or so of each person’s replies. It just keeps the thread more organized and easier to read when you’re on mobile. I’ll do it now to this post. This time, I cut it a little short, I think, but I thought it was a good idea to clip out the med bay stuff that’s not quite as relevant now. On that note, if you want to go back and read those, just click on an older post before this and they’ll still be there. :)

Mika listened closely, nodding occasionally. Though Fayth did ramble just a tad, Mika was actually enjoying listening to her, and felt no need to stop her. “I see. And I agree, it is quite important to know how to treat people without a full sickbay or hospital. So, with that in mind, what were you planning on specializing in? Any ideas?” She asked, leaning back in her chair. She still had yet to figure out just how to do these interviews, but so far she was pretty pleased with how it was going.

Sharah thought, “I haven’t actually thought about that. I would really like to experiment with chemical compositions of raw materials found on different planets to look at more organic medicines and techniques. To help develop a reference to help those in extreme or survival situations, though if they are without technology a reference might be very difficult. The Academy should really offer a course like that in survival training. I mean we have a basic first aid course for all medical personnel, but not something that everyone is required to take. It really could help so many people if they are having to wait for medical assistance or rescue. Of course I am really interested in exobiology but that subject is so examined over and over again I’m not sure I would provide anything new to the field.” And without thinking about what she said next her next thought just tumbled out. “I definitely don’t want to specialize in surgery.”
