“Something a little… quieter would be nice. Not like, classical, but like, I dunno pop-y or R&B or something,” Mika suggested, though once she heard Kastyi’s suggestion, she said, “Well, that might be okay, too.” She was still quite shaken up from her… conversation with Trenton.

Winston hopped from his seat and meandered over to the jukebox. “Let’s see what we’ve got here…” He said as he inspected the available songs.

~Cadet Winston Greiss, Engineer

The jukebox offered only an abbreviated selection of tracks: a Sinatra song titled You’ll Never Know, Open Your Eyes, They, All Around You and a blues track named Wake Up Everybody.

Meanwhile, on the steps outside, Aili was preparing to re-enter the bar. She was still embarassed by how slow she had moved with Mika, having seen what she just had, and dreading having her fear confirmed; that being the bond she had been forming with the other cadet having been swept aside by Trenton’s more efficient advances. Bringing herself to her feet, she quickly desended the steps and crouched before a puddle. With no regard for the supposed dirtiness of the holographic water, she splashed a little on her face. She then turned, jogged back up the stairs while patting her face dry on her sleeve, and pushed through the door.

Greiss groaned as he saw the available songs. “Typical…” He muttered. It was something that always bugged him about Starfleet computers and facilities. They never had music past the 1950’s already loaded in. A fascination shared between all Starfleet system programmers? Who knows? The stuck up admirals probably ate this stuff up. No space for fun or high energy music when you’re grumpily giving orders, he mused. But… Sinatra was Sinatra, and rock certainly wouldn’t alleviate any stress with Mika, so he’d have to settle. He pressed in on the button adjacent to the plaque labeled ‘You’ll Never Know’, and intently watched as the holographic imitation of machinery whirred about, and moved a record into place.

Hayley wandered over to the bar and climbed onto an available stool. “I’d like a ginger ale please,” She requested when the bartender looked her way. She glanced over toward the jukebox as the music started. She knew she’d seen the cadet standing there around the ship but couldn’t yet put a name to the face. So far she really hadn’t had many opportunities to meet anyone other then her CO.

Cadet Marshall, Doctor

“Sinatra, huh?” Mika asked as Greiss put the record on. “I can respect that.” She was definitely winding down, and she finally ordered herself a soda to drink. And then she noticed Aili at the door, and she turned so quickly, she immediately knocked the soda over, spilling the contents of the glass all over her own lap and all over Hayley’s. The glass rolled off the counter, smashing on the floor. The bar table had gotten a good dousing, too. “Crap! Sorry! I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to knock that over…” she said to Hayley, snatching napkins out of a napkin holder on the counter. She began trying to blot up the table, ignoring the wetness of her own clothes in a hurried attempt to make sure no more of the sticky liquid dripped onto Hayley’s clothes. She glanced briefly at Aili, but then she looked away, her face flushing a bright red. She’d made an absolute fool of herself, and she felt like she’d never live this down.

Hayley startled and let out an undignified squeak as the cold soda hit her lap, then grabbed a few napkins herself and started to help clean up, “Oh, don’t worry about it at all, at home I was always getting splashed with paint or linseed oil, this will at least be easy to clean up.” She looked up and noticed the expression on Mika’s face, “Is everything alright?”

Cadet Marshall, Doctor

Not exactly music he could dance to, Kast decided. Ah well, it wasn’t his party. He killed his root beer, then drummed his hands lightly on the bartop, debating what to do next. He was forever being told to socialize, so maybe there was someone here to have a chat with.

Cadet Satyol, Scientist

Mika hesitated a long moment, silently blotting up more of the mess she’d caused, and then she glanced over at Aili again. “It’s- nothing. It’s stupid.” She told Hayley. She was confused. She felt like she’d upset Aili somehow, which was absolutely not what she wanted to do. She really hoped she’d get a chance to talk to Aili, to iron everything out. She forced back on her usual, cheerful expression. “I’ll be okay! You’re.. Marshall, aren’t you? The new Medical Cadet?”

~ Cadet Tandra Mika, Doctor

Just then, the bartender came hurtling towards Mika and Satyol with a towel pressed across the bartop. He didn’t slow as he passed the two cadets, the towel more sweeping away the wetness than drying it. The man then walked back along the bar in the opposite direction, allowing the towel to properly absorb the spilled drink, his gaze never leaving Mika’s eyes while he did so.

Sharah had seen the notice that there was as social gathering in the holodeck for new cadets. She was the newest one to come aboard, and really she just wanted to go to bed, but she wanted to meet the people she would be working with. Despite her ‘medical condition’ Sharah loved to be around people, or she had at home on Betazed. It was different at the Academy. She always had to be careful and controlled. If she slipped it made people too nervous, and if she didn’t she was ‘too stiff’ to be fun. She seriously thought about just going back to her quarters and reading a book. She LOVED books. She often ended up with her eyes burning for all the reading she did. And REAL books too. Not on a PaDD. There was nothing like the smell of a new book, or better yet, an old book.

With a deep breath she walked through the door. It wasn’t as crowded as she feared, but she would have to be extra careful. She saw a table almost in shadow and started to head that way, but she was supposed to be meeting her crew mates. Instead she opted for a table with a view of the room and well lit so it didn’t seem she was hiding. It also had enough distance to allow her some mental breathing room. She ordered a drink from the bar tender and then sat down.

Cadet McMorran re-entered the space just in time to see Mika slap a glass into oblivion with the back of her hand, or so she thought; she had no suspicious that she was in fact the cause of Mika’s spasm. Aili scanned the section of the room she could see from the door, intent on thanking Rainns. Wherever he had gotten to after reentering, she couldn’t see him from where she stood, so Aili began slowly making her way back to the front of the bar. Some new figures had appeared since she had left. Although she didn’t recognize them, from their behavior she was fairly sure both women were members of the crew, not holograms. The first who’s path she crossed after rounding the bar was Fayth. She took a deep breath before introducing herself. “Hello! I’m Aili”. With that, she found herself bending slightly forwards and her hand extending politely towards the woman.

Sharah looked up at the Cadet. She took a deep breath and smiled, “Hi Aili. I’m Sharah.” She shook Aili’s hand. “Would you like to join me?” She indicated the other chair at the table. She noticed that Aili’s face was slightly damp. She had splashed water on her face enough times to understand the need to ‘brace’ yourself for whatever it was you had to do, but would rather not. Sharah was pretty sure most of the cadets felt that way right now. They all wanted to make a good impression, or, she assumed so since they had all spent 4 years at the Academy and showed up to the ship as ordered.

Rainns had spent the last few minutes silently walking about the holographic, observing the newcomers and enjoying the music that had just been turned on, if he were being honest, Sinatra was the only thing keeping him in the bar at this point. He noticed when McMoran reentered and Mika’s subsequent reaction of spilling the drink. He smiled. What shocked him, however, was that instead of going toward Mika, McMoran seemed to drift away. ‘Still needs a nudge’ he thought. Rainns made his way over to the table at which McMoran and and another cadet who had just entered were sitting and took the last open chair at the table. He introduced himself to the woman he did not know “Joseph Rainns”, he said, nodding at her.

Cadet Joseph Rainns- Security

Sharah glanced up as the young officer approached. His stride indicated he was focused on something, he had a purpose. Suddenly the ‘background’ noise became louder roaring in. *No Zharah. Stop it. To us and breath. These people are your crewmates but they are strangers. You can’t screw up. Sharah nodded and smiled. “Sharah Fayth. Nice to meet you Joseph.” Sharah got the impression that he was comfortable enough with himself to be at ease any where. She wished she was. But how many times had she been told the same thing about herself? Well this was a new start and she would be that way.

Winston sauntered over to the same table holding his drink. He noticed an unfamiliar cadet , and opened his mouth to speak, but stopped, seemingly noticing something. He stared puzzled, looking directly into Shara’s eyes for a good few seconds, his brow furrowing as thoughts and questions danced across his mind. After an uncomfortable silence, his eyes widened, lighting up. “Betazoid! That’s what was off. I can’t believe I forgot about the pure black irises.”

Whatever words Aili had been preparing for ejection from her mind to her mouth were blown aside by the arrival of the two men. She looked on with visible surprise as each introduced himself. She didn’t know why she had apparently been the vanguard of a social assault on poor Sharah but she wasn’t feeling up to milling among a group of that size. “I’m… going to grab another drink”, she said as her head swivelled to look each of the other three cadets in the eyes. She nodded gently at Sharah. “Nice to meet you Sharah”. As she turned away, she placed a hand on Rainns’ shoulder and whispered simply: “Thank you”.

Returning to where her evening had begun, Aili saw the three cadets sitting there but primarily she saw Tandra. Taking a deep breath, she decided on her next move. Approaching the bar, she pulled out the stool next to Aili and sat herself down. She chose not to announce her presence, instead looking to the bartender for a fresh drink. When she realised he was rather busy brushing up broken glass, she elected to wait until he was finished. She swivelled to face the other cadets and leaned on the bar, wearing a friendly smile and listening in to their conversation.

Sharah gazed back at the unknown cadet. He was puzzled by her and she wasn’t sure why. When the look of recognition crossed his face she felt a stab of fear and then a rush of adrenaline. Surely this cadet hadn’t recognized her from the rumors that followed her around. Of course the rumors were restricted mostly to the medical field, or so she hoped. When he piped up about her Betazoid eyes, she smiled brightly and relaxed. She had forgotten how different her eyes were, no one ever seemed to notice that about her once they got to ‘know’ her. “Yes, I’ve always been fascinated by what evolutionary factors have caused us on Betazed to have all black eyes. I’m Sharah Fayth.” She held out her hand to the cadet.

As Aili got up, Sharah smiled. “It was nice to meet you Aili. ” Sharah hoped the fact she was Betazoid hadn’t scared her off. She knew most people didn’t blink an eye about telepaths, but she wasn’t most telepaths. She fought back the thoughts swirling around the room. She didn’t want to know everyone’s personal thoughts.
