Sharah is short, 5‘2”, with blue black hair that bounces with the slightest movement. It is the band of her daily routine. She entered sickbay, instinctively feeling the presence of those around her. She stepped into the main medical bay and walks over to the first available doctor. “Cadet Sharah Fayth reporting for onboarding medical exam.” She handed the PADD with her medical records to the doctor.OOC: Once again, welcome aboard! That’s a good first post, too! Just one little thing - remember to sign off your post as your character, so we know who’s talking. Like I’ve done at the end of this one! It doesn’t really matter how you do it, just so long as your character’s name is in it :)
IC:
NE Benson happened to be the doctor that Fayth caught the attention of. “Oh yes, of course. Let me get Doctor Mika. She’ll be handling your exam today,” said he, taking the PaDD when Cadet Fayth offered it. Then, he rushed off into the business that was the sickbay. And just a few moments later, a shorter woman of 5‘4’’ headed up to Fayth, smiling a friendly smile. Her hair, once cut into a pixie cut style, had grown out somewhat. Down to her ears, in fact, and it looked quite messy. She was also quite young - she could be a Cadet herself. Just a tad nervous, she carried with her a tricorder and the PaDD that Cadet Fayth had given to NE Benson. “Sorry, it’s been pretty busy around here lately,” she said, finally stopping a few paces away from Cadet Fayth.
“So. You must be Cadet Fayth, huh? Glad to meet you! I’m Ca- Lieutenant Mika, the Chief Medical Officer.” She said, and gave another friendly, if somewhat nervous, smile. Her uniform indicated that she was a Junior Lieutenant, so her newness was… probably to be expected. Okay, Tandra, she thought, giving herself an internal pep-talk, You’ve done this, like, fifty times. There’s always new Cadets aboard this ship. We can tackle the CMO stuff after this. “Why don’t we get started? And once I’ve finished your onboarding physical, we can head to my office for your check-in.”
~ Lt. JG Mika, CMO
Sharah liked this CMO. She felt very at ease and her rigid self control slipped just a bit and she caught the beginning of Lt. Mika’s thoughts to herself. She stopped that immediately and blushed slightly. Other species were so different from Betazoids. Catching thoughts/feelings of others was natural and just happened. It kept them honest and usually prevented strife. Though there were those that took advantage of that openness and twisted it into something ugly and took advantage of others. Her biggest fear was that her crew mates would see her that way. Sharah hopped onto the bio bed for her exam.
“I’m very glad to meet you as well Lt. I am very excited to be here. I’ve heard great things about the Challenger. I am also up to date on the current mission. I assume we will need to set up a triage here, or possibly a cargo bay? I haven’t heard how many people are trapped in the mines.” Sharah really wanted to make a good first impression with her first DH. Lt. Mika’s reviews and evaluations could make or break her career. She liked that she seemed almost as nervous as Sharah was. And they were pretty close in height. Most people towered over Sharah and she was glad to not have to arch her neck to look up at the Lt.

OOC: So, for future reference, this generally occurs before the main sim. However, this time, we’ll just work with it. XD On another note, I realize that last time I forgot to explain this, so if you don’t know, NE stands for Nameless Ensign, and it’s basically an NPC character used for mundane tasks, or like redshirts in the original series. :)
IC:
If Mika had known that Fayth could hear her thoughts, she’d be utterly embarrassed. However, she had convieniently forgotten that Betazoids had that particular ability.“Yes, the Challenger is a fantastic ship,” Mika said, nodding. “As for the miners… We don’t know yet. We’re planning on sending a team down. We can hope for the best.”
Tandra liked that Fayth seemed at ease. She remembered how stressful her own first day had been, and though the previous CMO, Lt. Tija, was short too, and a great teacher, she had been very… curt, and sometimes that made it hard to know whether you were doing well or not. Though Mika did very much look up to Lt. Tija, she wanted to handle things a little differently.
As Mika started into the usual evaluation stuff, she seemed to relax. “So. I’ve got your file here…” she said, reading through the file that was open on the PaDD. “Is there anything that wouldn’t be on here that I’d need to know? Any changes in sleeping habits or eating habits, or trips outside Federation space, or anything like that.”
~ Lt. JG Mika, CMO
Sharah became suddenly very tense and looked a little trapped. She took a deep breath and resigned herself to the truth, “Everything is in my file. No changes in sleeping habit or eating habits. I’ve not traveled anywhere but home since joining the academy.” Sharah laughed a little, more to ease her own tension. “You’re my DH so I you’ll find out sooner or later, I’ve been hospitialized when I was young. ” She rushed to add, “I haven’t had any problems in years. I work really hard at it. ” She stops realizing she hasn’t really said anything. She sighs sadly. She had been passed over due to her ‘condition,’ and she couldn’t blame the DHs for not wanting to add stress to already nervous cadets. “I’m overly gifted, as my parents would say. I work very hard to control it, though it requires extreme concentration. I’m lucky, most Betazoids like me can’t function in positions where they are around a lot of people. I promise I won’t cause problems.” Sharah figured her next step would be to get her bags from her un-yet used quarters and head home.
(OOC: Sharah is overly empathic and has been since birth, unlike most Betazoids that develop telepathy at adolescence. The over stimulation can cause mental break downs and require hospitalization. They usually have very little control and are constantly ‘hearing’ others’ thoughts and feelings. Refer to the Episode of TNG: Tin Man and Deanna Troi’s patient Tam Elbrum.)
IC: Sharah’s medical record showed 3 different instances of hospitalization due to trauma to her paracortex. Once when she was barely a year old, again at 5, and the last time when she was 15. Her records indicated that she had recovered and was considered extremely healthy despite those incidences. Her psychological files, was much longer and would require more than a brief overview. She had quite lengthy evaluations from her professors.
OOC: Thanks for the tip!
So, in my post, my CMO is going to be scanning your character, and since there isn’t a GM in threads like this you’ll get to tell me what the scanner says :)IC:
Mika smiled reassuringly, putting her hands up. “Alright, slow down there. You seem to be doing well, so it’s not a concern. If ever it becomes a problem we’ll reassess and try and help you, alright?” She read through the rest of the file, but, a large majority would be in Counselor Korczak’s arena, and Mika knew that the Cadet would have to speak to him before starting duty anyway. It’s a little odd that she can probably hear everything I’m- Oh! I hope she’s not hearing this! She thought, and then glanced away, embarrassed. “Um, anyway, everything else looks good.”
She shook her head, refocusing herself on her job. “Alright, last step. I’m just going to scan over you with my scanner, just to make sure everything looks okay,” she said, and then she took the little node piece from the tricorder, and began moving it slowly near Fayth’s body from her head all the way down to her toes. As she did so, she kept her eyes trained on the screen, watching what came up.

Sharah nodded and took a few deep breaths. Other than confirming what was already in her med file, physically she was in excellent health. “I’m sorry. I ramble on with half thoughts when I get nervous. I’m really excited to be here and I want to do a really good job. I’ve always wanted to serve in Star Fleet and … well I wasn’t sure it was going to happen.” Sharah noticed Lt. Mika glance away and ‘knew’ from previous experience she had already made someone uncomfortable. She didn’t have to be telepathic to see that. She would have done well as a negotiator because she was so observant, but it wasn’t her calling. She loved to heal people and care for them. It was all she ever wanted to do.

Mika stepped back, setting down the tricorder, all signs of uncomfortable-ness gone. “You’re all healthy! Definitely fit for duty!” She turned to Sharah, giving her an ever-so-rare serious look. “In my experience, besides lack of knowledge, the only thing that causes you to not do a good job, is to doubt yourself. Just assume you’ll do fine, and you will.” She did not believe that Sharah lacked the knowledge to be a good starship doctor, so she looked forward to seeing the Cadet gain the confidence to become a good doctor. And then, her normal, cheerful look returned, and she added, “If you come with me, we can finish your department check-in, too.”
~ Lt. JG Mika, CMO
Sharah nodded and followed Lt Mika out of the main area of sickbay. She dug her second PaDD out and passed over her transfer orders to the Lt. She forced herself to relax and to enjoy finally being assigned to a starship. She knew she was a good doctor and she had top marks in her classes. She would be okay if she just could remember to breath when her mind began to race.

OOC: Since the location changed from the Sickbay to the CMO’s Office, I updated the topic with the new location.
IC:
Mika paused in the doorway to the office. The office was rather plain, and fairly small. Only the bare essentials sat on the desk, which faced towards the door. The walls were empty. There was a small sofa in the room, a leftover from the previous CMO. The rest of the office was currently empty. She hadn’t had a chance to do anything with it yet. Though, if she had, she had no idea what she would’ve done with it. She still saw it as Lieutenant Tija’s office, and quite honestly, to change it felt almost wrong, like she’d get in trouble. She missed having the more experienced doctor around, and often felt way too inexperienced for the position. But she was also proud. Proud she’d done well enough to be able to call it her office. Proud that she was now in the position to be on the other side of the big desk, even if that prospect made her quite nervous. She’d make her old mentor proud of her, she knew she would. And with that thought, she headed into the office, picking one of the two chairs on the near side of the desk, and sat down, gesturing for Cadet Fayth to take the other.
“So.” She said, and then another long pause followed, as Mika decided how to begin. Nervousness made it hard to think. Caused her mind to wander. She wondered if she seemed very… chief officer-y. She guessed probably not. Refocusing her mind once again, she returned her attention to Fayth. “What made you choose Starfleet? What made you want to do medicine on a ship?” She said finally, deciding that was the best way to get their conversation started. She hoped future interviews went smoother.
~ Lt. JG Mika, CMO
Sharah liked that the office was empty. She was curious to see how the Lt would decorate the office to reflect her personality. She also liked that the office had been emptied from the previous CMO. She thought that meant that Lt. Mika wanted to be her own officer not shadowed by her predecessor. She sat down in the chair Mika offered. “Oh, well I guess Star Fleet was an after though to medicine. I have always enjoyed helping people. I have always been fascinated by how the body systems were designed to work together so flawlessly. I was 5 when I realized that we all didn’t come from the same place, but yet we are very similar in basic makeup and design and I wanted to know if other species bodies worked the same way mine did. I drove the doctors and nurses crazy with questions.” Sharah smiled remembering buzzing the nurses and doctors constantly with questions. Once she had been allowed out of her room she started bugging the patients too. “That led me to Star Fleet eventually. Where else can I learn about all the species that make up our existence? My real passion is natural medicine though. I mean, how did our ancestors do it without our technology? I feel like their methods are still valid, because they worked, back then, and so they must work now too. Most people look at me like I’m crazy, but if an away team is stuck somewhere, or a new colony doesn’t have the supplies they need, they eat something native that is poisonous, you have to know about natural remedies to be able to figure out what the natural predator for that animal, or plant, or virus would be. Most away teams don’t even take a medic with them unless they already know there are injured on the planet. So what do they do without a med kit? They have to know how to use what is around them.” Sharah was starting to ramble on about examples of different ways doctors or colonists had to find ways to take care of medical emergencies their technology (or lack of) wasn’t the solution. It was obvious she could go on for hours about the topic.
