OOC: This is a continuation of something that started in Aili’s physical pre-sim. I’ll likely start up the ‘next day’ sim once we’ve finished this one, where all would be welcome to join! :)

“Of course not!” Mika replied, pulling herself up onto the tall rock as well. She reached near the top, clinging to the rock, her foot resting in a small indent in the rock. “Look how far we can see now!” She said, looking over from the mountain. “The view up here is fantastic!” They could see where they started at, and from here, had an even better view of the lake.

Aili reached the top at about the same time as Tandra. Clambering up, she brushed shoulders with the other girl as she found her balance on the narrow surface. “Yes! That’s the idea.” Lightly panting, Aili extended her hand for a competitors’ handshake. “You’re quite the sprinter!”, she complimented, and she meant it. Tandra was far more athletic than Aili would have predicted. “I like to think that I’m reasonably fit, I mean I came straight from my regular run around the decks, but look at you go! You must have some seriously strong legs on you!”. She may have sounded like she was dishing out compliments unduly, but she truly was just speaking her mind as she collected herself. Once she had recovered her wits she realised the extent of her blabbing, promptly shutting herself up and smiling tentatively at Tandra.

Tandra shook her hand, blushing slightly. All the praise made her feel shy. “I did track in high school. And I… well, I have my hobbies,” She said, smiling mischievously. “If you wouldn’t mind, maybe I could join you when you run sometimes? I haven’t been practicing much of anything since I came aboard the ship.” She asked, hoping Aili said ‘Yes’. It would be another time for them to hang out, too, so to Tandra, it was very much all around ‘win’s.

“Hobbies eh?”, Aili retorted with an eyebrow raised. “Of course you can! I would say we make a good team, but we might work better as competitors.” She laughed. “Besides, your company would be nice. Company! Company would be nice!”. Aili promptly turned her head away and looked out at the loch rolling out beneath them, literally biting her tongue to contain the more obvious bodily cringe threatening to overtake her. Gods, the voice in her head hissed, can you be a bit less akward for one day? Either be cool or go for it. Or both!

Tandra laughed at Aili’s awkwardness, a friendly laugh rather than a mean one. “Then that’s that! Next time you run, come find me, if I’m not on duty. And we’ll compete!”

“Would you like, em”, she stammered, “would you maybe like to, em. Would you like to…”, she cleared her throat as her vague confidence abandoned her, “…check in and see where the rest of them have gotten to?”

As Aili stammered her sentence, Tandra grew nervous. Is she gonna ask… that question? And then she said, “check in…” and Tandra was left somewhat confused. How was that a question to make Aili so nervous? “Oh- uh, yeah, I guess we should, huh? What if they’re, um, back on the hill, looking for us?” She said, almost disappointed. You probably just misread things, Tandra, you’re good at that. she thought, also turning to look at the lake.

Reaching into a slim pocket in her trousers, Aili produced a near flat, circular device. Holding it in her left palm, she pressed its singular visible button, prompting a holographic display to emerge above it. Swiping and scrolling, she eventually reached a list of names. Looking through them, her face fell into a frown. “I… don’t understand”, she said in a bemused tone. “Huh. Something, well the system, well probably I, have messed things up… Only half of the the cadets were invited for today, and the rest for tomorrow. Oops…” Turning to Mika, Aili sported an apologetic expression which was somewhat insincere but partly genuine, leading into an apology which would act as a proxy for her asking forgiveness for misleading the other cadet. “I’m sorry, it looks like everyone else who was invited for today is on duty…” She gritted her teeth, worried that Tandra would be angry for having her time wasted. Everyone was always busy here. Time was precious.

Tandra got the hint that she had been misled, but she did not find herself overly angry. “You did that on purpose, didn’t you?” She asked. She wanted to be angry, she really did, but at the same time, she knew that was exactly the sort of crap she herself would pull, and she couldn’t bring herself to be upset. Tandra didn’t at all consider it time wasted, she had really enjoyed it, and it was quite relaxing, which was nice. So, she decided to let it go. Everyone did questionable things once in a while, right?

Aili’s consciousness hit a wall in that moment. “I…”

“Just, next time, it might be easier on everyone if you just ask me, okay?” She said. It was a genuine piece of advice, but she wore a goofy grin. “I promise I don’t bite. And I might even say ‘yes’.”

“I mean…”. Aili’s head was spinning. How did she? Was it that obvious?, she questioned. Her dazed state wasn’t congruous with her keeping her balance and as such, she soon lost all control of it. Beginning to tip sideways, suddenly realising what was happening, Aili shot her arms forwards in an attempt to grab at the one thing in reach, Mika, to no avail. Within moments she was plummeting the several metres down the steeper side of the rocky peak to the ground below, her arms still outstretched. She landed roughly with a smack, a sharp pain running up her left arm. “Ghaaa!”, she shrieked through gritted teeth.
