The runabout successfully launched, Emmy settled into her chair on the bridge, staring at the view screen in front of her despite the lack of information on it.
“Try to maintain a communications signal with the runabout,” she instructed. “I want to know if we lose comms.” She knew the science and engineering departments had been working to see what they could do about maintaining them with the storms, but she wasn’t sure if they had come up with a definitive solution and the idea of sending her crew members into the mining station without being able to speak with them bothered her more than she was willing to let on.

Cadet McMorran acknowledged the instruction: “Aye, Captain”. She felt a flutter in her stomach. That was her first time saying that outside of the simulators. Aili opened a simple connecting channel to the shuttle and carefully tracked its progress, preparing to counter the interference that would inevitably come when the shuttle entered the turbulent atmosphere, her hands shaking slightly with the pressure of her responsibility.

“Lieutenant. This sounds like a horrible idea that I’m probably inadvertently volunteering for. But would our chances of communicating improve if we put something a big larger then a probe into orbit? Say another runabout?”

Max didn’t like the idea, but he probably just volunteered to fly the second runabout.

“And use it as a relay beacon?”

Emmy’s head tilted to the side at Harkness’ suggestion. It was logical and he would, of course, be the likely choice to pilot such a vessel.

Max looked over at the Captain and saw the head tilt. Yup, that was all the confirmation he needed. It was time to dust off the old flight suit.
