It was at times like this where Varik wished he had grown up on Vulcan instead of on Earth. Surely he would have had an easier time repressing his emotions then. Now he stood on the main engineering deck, his calm Facade hiding his turbulent emotions. Finally a superior officer found time to see him.

“Cadet Varik reporting for duty, sir.”

A six-foot tall blue-skinned Andorian in an gold-trimmed operations uniform turned around to face Cadet Varik. He had a lieutenant’s rank insignia on his uniform, and was holding some type of damaged object in his hand.

“Cadet Varik? I’m Lieutenant Keval Vras, the chief engineer. Here, hold this,” Keval said, handing over the damaged object and placing it in Varik’s unsuspecting hands. Upon closer inspection, Varik would probably recognize it as a storage section of a plasma canister. It gave off a hissing spark as Varik looked at the object he was now holding.

Keval turned on a holo-projector he had been holding in his other hand, which appeared to now display a high-resolution scan of the interior of the damaged canister Varik was now holding. He continued to talk while studying the scans. “So cadet, did you just arrive on board Challenger?” The damaged canister chose to spark again, this time with a loader hiss, as if it was answering the chief engineer instead of the cadet.
