Cadet McMorran approached the door to the Counsellor’s office for her check in at a leisurely pace. At the academy, the formal requirements for appointments of this nature had been fairly minimal and Aili’s experiences with counsellors and the like hadn’t extended beyond that. This wasn’t to say that she was resistant, she recognised the role and importance of the officer she was about to meet, but she had to admit she was anticipating being slightly uncomfortable when faced with scrutiny going beyond the strictly professional. As she reached the door, the Cadet took a deep breath and sounded the door chime to make her presence know.

The doors slid open silently. The office on the other side of the door was unlike any area in the rest of the ship. It was lit in a more subdued manner than the rest of the ship, with the light coming from wall lamps rather than the typical overhead lighting. Multiple bookcases with glass enclosed shelves lined one wall, filled with copies and originals of many texts on many different subjects, and a quick glance would show multiple languages as well. The desk was set at an angle against the opposite wall to the door in the corner, allowing for a large open space in the middle. Here there was a couch and a few chairs, one of which sat in front of and facing away from the desk. Pictures hung on the walls, some were even old photographs. Each depicted either places, individuals, or groups of people, and many were in black and white.
The Counselor was wholly plain looking; in fact so nondescript that he almost blended in with the office. His voice, on the other hand, was distinctive. “Hello. I am Lieutenant Commander Korczak. How may I help you, Cadet?” The man had a most unusual accent, as if two wholly unrelated accents were vying for control. Even with that, his speech was clear and articulate; with crisp pronunciation and diction. The only other noticeable fact of the man were the glasses perched on his nose… actual glasses.

Aili’s first impressions of the councilor were positive. The decor was fairly typical of what she had expected but did seem to convey genuine character, history and interest, rather than a simple, clinically ‘comfortable’ environment. The man himself, after her experience with Lieutenant Garth, seemed perfectly ordinary to her in all but one respect. She took his words as an invitation and stepped through the doorway, before standing not far from said doorway with her hands behind her back: “Cadet Aili McMorran reporting for my boarding check-in, sir”.
She paused to await acknowledgement before interjecting: “Your glasses! I’ve never seen anyone but my dear grandpa… I’m sorry sir”, she recomposed herself, “I just didn’t expect to see ancient-style glasses worn on a starship.”
