Douglas after stopping saw Lieutenant Tija, asked, “Are you also another passenger?”

(Cadet. Douglas. Science)

Nijix had spotted Cadet Rainns heading to the shuttle room earlier. She was subtly impressed and glad he had the initiative to act in the best interest of the mission. Her fingers pressed on her com badge as she spoke into it. It would take more than two security officers to assist in the physical labor and securing the site.

Her figure stepped into the room just in time to hear a cadet question if someone was a passenger. She ignored the question as she moved toward Rainns.

“It’s nice to see you’re quick on your toes. Now, help me load up these type 3 phasers into the shuttle. We’ll need them if we’re going to try to cut through rock. On the count of three, we’ll lift it.” Nijix pointed at the current crate she stood beside. She leaned down to grip the edges and lift when the Cadet said three.

OOC: I’m showing the following members of the away team: Tavium (COS), Vras (CE), Tija (CMO), Rainns (Sec), Taurean (Sci), Douglas (Sci), Collins (Sec), and Christianson (Sec). Did I miss anyone?
OOC: Added Silke’s character to the list above.

While everyone else in the shuttle bay seemed to be busy with one thing or another, the CMO was rooted to the spot. She was pale as a sheet and her breathing was shallow. Something seemed to be wrong and considering that she hadn’t answered the Cadet’s question, it would be a safe bet to say that she was only physically present. But the question was: where was the usually so present and focused doctor mentally right now? And maybe more pressingly: Could someone snap her out of it?

~Lt. Tija, CMO
Schweitzer was surprised with Lt. Tija summoned him to go on the away mission. He grabbed his med-kit and his inoculations and hurried to the shuttlebay. He assumed he was needed because no one to his knowledge knew the medical status of the miners precisely and contagion on the surface was a possibility. He opened the shuttlebay doors just as the other cadets were talking about what might be a rough trip to the colony. His stomach immediately turned. This was the part of joining Starfleet that scared him the most. He did not want to die in some shuttle accident on some far off planet. He joined to help bring his medical acumen to the galaxy and to cure diseases so beings throughout the galaxy could lead healthier, peaceful lives. But risk was the price he had to pay to do that. He held out his supplies and addressed the group weakly, “Where would you like me to store these?”

It seemed that it didn’t even register with the CMO that she had been asked a question as she neither replied nor reacted in anyway. Instead she just stood there, pale and with unfocused eyes, her breathing shallow.

After carrying the field generator aboard the runabout, Rainns assisted his commanding officer with hauling aboard the crate of phaser rifles. Once the crate was placed on board he let out a sigh of breath from the slight strain on his body. He felt that strain was more of stress than exertion though, since he had lifted much heavier objects in the past and this was, after all, his away mission. Taking a seat he breathed in again and awaited the runabout’s takeoff.

Douglas looked at Cadet Flysalot questioningly. “I’m I still up front?”

(Cadet. Douglas. Science)

“Have you finished loading those communication relays, cadet?” Keval asked Cadet Douglas. “Helping to make sure we can all stay in communication through the EM storms will be part of your work on the mission. Make sure they are properly stowed and join us on board.”

Keval could tell the science cadet was eager for the away mission, but the Andorian knew that Captain Davis would want a post-mission review of the cadets, including how well they followed through on their orders and assignments while still showing initiative. Plus, Kevel thought, grinning to himself, following orders would keep ‘eager’ cadets out of too much trouble…

As Nijix finished up and others began to board, her eyes caught Lt. Tija locked in place. It looked like an internal panic attack. This made Nijix frown in concern as she approached the department head. She didn’t touch the woman at first.

She looked at the Science Cadet.

“I’ll help her, you get into the shuttle and get ready for the trip. It won’t take long.” Nijix’s voice was gentle, but firm. A hint for him not to argue with her.

She turned her attention back to Tija then gently touched her shoulder. The CoS braced for the worst, but expected the mildest reaction.

The moment Tavium touched her shoulder, Tija flinched and stumbled backwards. Her eyes were wide, pupils dilated, and she stared at the other woman like a deer in headlights.

“What’s the matter? You look like you’re having a panic attack on the inside.” Her voice was a soft, reassuring whisper.

-Lt. Nijix Tavium, CoS

It took Tija a couple of moments, but eventually she managed to say in a barely audible whisper, “I … I can’t … I can’t get on board. N-not if … if we really … if we really have to go into … into free fall.” She was starting to feel dizzy and now that she was aware of herself and her surroundings again, she knew why: She was almost hyperventilating. Closing her eyes, she tried to force herself to take deeper breaths.

“Don’t worry about what anyone said about us falling down or the inertial dampeners failing while we are on thrusters,” Keval said, as he got on board the runabout himself. He continued, jovially, “The inertial dampeners are one of the most secured systems. We’ll be vaporized by a warp core breach, or asphyxiated from life support failure long before the inertial dampeners ever failed.”

-Lt. Keval Vras, CE

Schweitzer stored his gear with Lt. Tija’s gear and found a seat in the now nearly full shuttle. He tried to not think about the comment about being vaporized or asphyxiated, without success. He sat down nervously and strapped himself in tightly. Even though the shuttle was kept at a constant temperature, Schweitzer felt sure he was starting to sweat.

Opening her eyes again, Tija looked at Vras. She wanted to believe him, but images of that horrible day kept flashing in front of her mind’s eye and she couldn’t bring herself to move even a step closer towards the runabout.
