Schweitzer had expected this question and he gave the answer he had been giving since he started college at 11. “My 15 times great grandfather, for whom I am named, was a famous missionary physician on Earth who traveled to then unexplored Africa to open a hospital to help the native population there. Deep space is the current frontier of humanity. I joined Starfleet to use my medical training to cure the diseases of humanity and the other species we encounter there.” He sat up a little straighter in his chair and leaned forward because the discussion was on a comfortable footing for him. He waited for Lt. Tija to address him again.

For a couple of moments Tija mustered Schweitzer closely, her head ever so slightly tilted to the right. Eventually she asked, “So you became a doctor and a Starfleet officer to step into your fifteen times great-grandfather’s footsteps?” There was no judgement in her voice. She was simply curious to understand his motivation. For as long as their motivation didn’t get into people’s way of fulfilling their duty, there was no right or wrong reasons to chose this path.

Cadet Schweitzer replied, “My family has a legacy of service. I am just continuing it.” Schweitzer wondered if this line of questioning would lead back to the work. However, he knew better than to ask a question of a superior before being asked for one.
