It was only when she had already pressed the chime that it occurred to Tija that she probably should have called the Captain first to see if she was actually in her ready room and more importantly had time to meet her just now. Oh well, it’s too late now, Tija thought annoyed with herself and mental kicking herself for her thoughtlessness and impulsiveness. All she could do now was wait and see and hope that the Captain wouldn’t be annoyed or the like by the unexpected visit.

“Enter!” called a firm voice from within and the door slid open to reveal Emmy behind her desk, intent on something on the screen in front of her. As Tija entered her ready room, her eyes flicked over to her and waited expectantly to find out what the CMO wanted.

Davis, CO

Once the door opened in front of her, Tija walked just far enough into the room that she’d be out of reach of the sensor and the door would close again. With her hands behind her straight back, she looked at the Captain and said, “I’m sorry for my unannounced visit. I have a brief … question, but if now isn’t a good time I’ll come back later.”

Emmy nodded once, curtly, and extended her hand to indicate the visitor’s chair across from her desk. Without waiting for Tija to make herself comfortable, she enquired, “what is your question?”

Davis, CO

While slipping onto the proffered chair, Tija said, “I’ve been thinking that it would be a good experience for the medical and science cadets and other members of those two departments to hold symposiums on the Challenger on a regular basis. But of course we would need a space that would work for that purpose. I know I could always book some holodeck time. But I was wondering if we could use one of the meeting rooms on Deck Three? As long as we aren’t on a diplomatic mission and need them of course.” For a moment she’d been on the verge of mentioning that that idea had come from her session with the Counsellor. But somehow she felt … uncomfortable, maybe even anxious mentioning that. So she kept it to herself.

While Emmy may be a bit short verbally, her focus remained diligently on Tija’s words, carefully listening to her request. “That’s acceptable,” she replied as Tija wrapped up her request. She paused for a moment, realizing this was a situation where she should likely have more to say than to simply approve it, but nothing was coming to her to ask about. Finally, after what seemed like quite the awkward silence, she offered, “do be sure to let the entire ship know of the symposium schedule. There may be personnel beyond those two departments who have an interest to attend.”

Davis, CO

“Thank you, Captain,” replied Tija. “And I will.” Then it was her turn to fall silent, making this moment a little more awkward than it already was. She felt like this might be a good opportunity to talk some more with Davis in general. But not being the most sociably skilled person, she didn’t quite know what to say. Eventually she asked, “While I’m already here, is there anything else we should talk about? Anything you’d like me to know with regard to my new position as Chief Medical Officer and part of your senior staff?”

If the moment was awkward, Emmy seemed to be completely oblivious to this fact as she stared over Tija’s right shoulder, expecting her to leave now that she had received her answer. Her follow up question took the woman by surprise and her eyes snapped to Tija’s face for the briefest moment. “Is there something you feel we should discuss?” she replied, turning the questions back around on the CMO.

Davis, CO

“I’m not sure,” Tija replied truthfully while a small frown formed on her face. “I guess I’m wondering what your expectations are and if there is anything elese you fele I should know?” She wasn’t entirely sure why, but she started to feel nervous. As a result she subconsciously dug her right thumbnail into the skin on the inside of her left forearm; her hands still resting in her lap.
