Standing before Cadet Douglas was a very unhappy Lieutenant Garth. The tellarite man stood with his fists clenched at his sides, covered in a white foam that slowly fizzled against his skin and clothes as the bubbles popped, leaving him soaking wet. The stout, rotund man moved his goggles to sit along his receding hairline, which was made more obvious by the scraggly wet strands of grey that were glued against his wrinkled forehead. Garth closed his eyes and took a couple deep breaths to calm himself, his brittle tusks pushing into his upper lip as he ground his teeth together.
“I’m fine, Cadet,” Garth half-growled as he slowly opened his eyes and removed his latex gloves before wiping a hand across his face. See the heat of the moment had affected Douglas as well, Garth regarded the cadet curiously. “You can relax, Cadet. Chemical fires are an unfortunately common hazard of our field.” Garth glanced behind him to take stock of the equipment Douglas had knocked over in his wild dash to get the fire extinguisher. He sighed.
Garth hobbled across the room to a cabinet, which he opened to retrieve a clean towel. He began drying himself as he spoke over his shoulder to Douglas. “You’re Cadet Douglas, yes? Despite our unfortunate introduction, I’ve been looking forward to meeting you.” Garth said that as if it were uncommon for him to actively look forward to meeting new cadets.
OOC: I know we talked about it before, just a reminder about past-tense!
(Lt. Garth, CSO)
Douglas after he placed the fire extinguisher he checked his arms for burn injuries while listening to Garth speak.
After Garth stopped speaking Douglas remained silent letting the tension rise. 30 seconds passed before James spoke “Nice to meet you aswell, I hope this doesn’t happen in my field, I’m an astronomer not a chemist.” After he said this he continued to check for burn marks. He said happily “no burn marks, hope that doesn’t again, shall we begin the meeting.” He said as he walked towards a seat. After sitting down he rested his arms, hands flat on the table trying to find a spot to put them. “Sorry about dropping your stuff” He said apologetically, almost disdainful of the mess he was trying to ingore.
OOC: Sorry about the last post. Mention what else I got wrong, I’m not sure.
(Cadet. Douglas. Science)
Garth raised a bushy eyebrow. “I’m an astrophysicist myself. But being a science officer in Starfleet means you must be prepared to take on the skills of a variety of disciplines. You never know what the mission might require. The last major mission the Challenger completed, I had to be a chemist, a botanist, and a psychiatrist all at once. Do you think you’re capable of expanding your competencies?”
James gave a cocky smile. “I’ll do what is necessary and learn, with assistance. So yes, I’ll be able to adapt. My question is, are you alright? sure you don’t need to visit sickbay?”
Garth waved a hand dismissively. “I’m fine,” he huffed. “It’s a hazard of the job. Although being this wet might give me a cold, and then I most certainly will be asking Dr. Tija for decongestants.”
The stout tellarite bent over with some difficulty to pick up a couple pieces of scattered equipment, placing them back on the cluttered tables. After struggling to bend over a second time, Garth uttered a “bah” before plopping down on a stool opposite of Douglas. “You already answered my first question, which was the declaration of your specialty. I saw you got exceptionally high marks at the Academy as well. Up until now, your achievement has relied on your ability to be independent. But now, you’re part of a crew. How are your teamwork skills?” Garth’s beady eyes narrowed at Douglas, inspecting him closer.
OOC: Here, I have posed two questions in two separate paragraphs. You can type between these paragraphs so that your character answers one question before the other and keeps the continuity of the thread while also allowing it to move forward more quickly. To do this, delete the “(response)” I typed above, including the > symbol next to it, and type whatever your response is! Then, respond as normal under this to the second topic of conversation. I hope that makes sense, but don’t worry if it takes a couple tries to get it!
(Lt. Garth, CSO)
Douglas exhaled dramatically before he exclaimed. “I’m sure you read the rest of my file, but I will probably not get along with a team, I’ll try and I apologise for anything the occurs. But if I can work with a team that has the capability of organising and being efficient I’ll be alright.” James said this as he was trying to ignore the mess. He leaned of the table and said “I really need this, no other organisation has accepted me and starfleet was my best bet, I just want to make something of my life and explore and study the stars.” After saying he leans back again trying to relax but really he was tense in every muscle.
OCC: Did the fit the requirements? tell me if I messed up.
(Cadet. Douglas. Science)
Garth eyed the cadet in front of him up and down, crossing his arms so that they rested atop his potbelly. “I’m not particularly fond of working with others either, Cadet Douglas. But in Starfleet, we must find a way to collaborate with not only other scientists, but officers from other departments as well. It takes a multidisciplinary team to keep this ship running and able to fulfill its duties to the citizens of the Federation. Exploring the stars is impossible to do alone.”
Douglas tried to look relaxed and gave a short exhale. “Yeah I know, and I’ll try everything to fit in.” Douglas sat back waiting for the next reply.
“Relax, Cadet.” Garth released a single chuckle. “You already passed all the exams, passed all the assessments, and made it aboard. I’ve never had a cadet fail after getting this far, and I can tell you won’t be the first. You’re a part of a real crew now. The Challenger may be an academy ship, but the missions we accept are very real, and have considerable stakes and even danger. You don’t need to impress anyone, you just need to do the job that you’ve been trained to do.”
OOC: I fixed up the formatting so you can see an example! It’s a tough thing to get right, so just keep practicing!
(Lt. Garth, CSO)
“And I’ll do it sir.” Douglas tried again to relax. “It’s a miracle that I passed in the first place, I made every teacher hate me in first week of me getting. I’ll do what I’ve been trained to do sir of course but I just hope the rest of the crew can accept me.” Douglas stood up still looking uncomfortable. “May I use your replicator?”
Garth raised an eyebrow. “I’m curious as to why your previous professors had such a distaste for you. I think you will find that on a Starfleet ship, the level of tolerance is much higher. After all, there are peoples of all cultures. My own, for instance. Humans tend to be off-put by tellarites due to our bluntness and combativeness. Of course I do my part to compromise as well, but there must be an understanding that everyone is different. Ultimately, we’re all here for the same reason.”
Garth motioned toward the industrial replicator inlaid with one of the walls. “Go ahead. Although if you’re about to order food or drink, don’t. This is a science lab, not a cafeteria.”
OOC: Next lesson! The thread is getting a bit long, which makes it rather annoying to scroll through, especially on mobile. To help with this, we do “snipping”. Snipping is where you delete some of the less recent posts in the reply. To do this, you’ll delete the lines of your response post with the most arrows ( > ) next to them, including the “posted by” line at the top. I have snipped your first post in the thread as an example, and written (snip) under it to indicate that there is more to the thread if someone wants to go back further to see its entirety. Give it a shot, see if you can snip my first post in the thread off in your reply.
(Lt. Garth, CSO)
As Douglas was walking towards the industrial replicator. “My professor’s distaste came from my apparent ‘relentless need to be right’ although I disagree with that statement.” James hit the button on the replicator and requested. “Long range Refractor telescope, I prefer looking at the stars, not just scanning them.”
(Cadet. Douglas. Science)
Garth grunted. “There’s nothing wrong with a need to be right, as long as you are willing to put in the work to ensure that you actually are, rather than blinded by devotion to some falsehood.”
Garth’s eyebrows raised in surprise. “We seem to have that interest in common, cadet. I have been working on a prototype portable interstellar telescope of my own design. Meant for observing and recording stellar phenomenon in immaculate detail. Have you tinkered with any modifications to that long range refractor telescope yourself?”
OOC: Go ahead and try snipping again in your reply! I snipped down another post as an example.
