Devon paused outside the open doorway to Sickbay. How many times had he been poked and prodded as he made his path to Starfleet? It doesn’t matter. He knew he wasn’t as athletic as some, but he wasn’t completely hopeless either. All those hours playing volleyball made quite a difference, though he was relegated to forever being on the back row, thanks to his average height. Steeling himself for one more doctor’s visit, he enters sickbay, and glances around, hoping to see the doctor. Spotting the short Bajoran doctor, Devon catches her eye, and walks over, extending his hand with a small smile. “Hello Doctor, I’m Cadet Devon Collins, reporting for my onboarding physical. It’s nice to meet you!”

OOC: Welcome aboard, Doug! That is really good first post! There are just a few tiny things to keep in mind. Here at STF we write in the past tense and we also sign our posts. The letter is important in threads with multiple people so that - even several posts in - you can still easily tell who wrote what. And we try not to make assumptions about other people’s characters. I don’t mind as it was such a small thing in this case. And yet it’s good to keep that in mind for the future. Any way, I hope you’ll enjoy being here :) Oh and don’t mind my CMO, she can be a bit curt at times.

IC:
“Hello Cadet Collins and welcome aboard,” Tija replied with a nod and the hint of a smile. As usual her ginger hair was tied back in a neat ponytail, leaving not only her Bajoran earring, but also the white scar that ran along her hairline on the right side of her face from her temple to ear, clearly visible. Instead of taking his proffered hand, she gestured towards the nearest biobed and continued, “Please have a seat.” That said she went to grab a PaDD and tricorder before walking towards the biobed herself.

Collins quickly pulled his hand back, hoping that the awkward moment wasn’t noticable. “Thank you Doctor.” He moved to the biobed, and sat down on the edge of it in a formal pose, though with a little comfort slipped in as well. As he glanced around the Sickbay, he tried to remember all the small details, just in case he would ever need to visit here again in the line of duty. He pulled his collar a little away from his neck, and his smile returned, as he sat patiently, waiting to see what would be required of him. His thoughts wandered back to his assuming all personnel would react as his friends and neighbors had back on earth, when he really had no experience whatsoever with greetings among the many races of Starfleet. He prayed he wouldn’t seem like such a small town, earthbound hick again!

If Tija found the moment awkward, she didn’t show it at all. Pulling up Collins’ medical file on the PaDD she asked, “Is there anything I should be aware of that might not be on your file? Any visits to non-Federation worlds in the past six months? Any illnesses or injures or changes in your sleeping or eating habits?” While she wasn’t unfriendly, she certainly was distant and professional, yet polite.

Holding in a small sigh of relief, Devon slipped comfortably into professional mode. “No Doctor, nothing out of the ordinary. In fact, this is really the first time I’ve been off Earth. As far as illnesses and the like, no changes. Really, the only difference is the stress involved in moving to a new posting, and probably with this being my first, that adds on to it. But really, that is a very manageable stress, so no problems there.”
