The last thing James wanted to do was join Starfleet, but now it is to late to go back home. All he thought he had to do is look out a window, run a few scans and follow orders; he now knows this is not all there is to being a scientist on a starship. James hesitantly gets up, composing himself for this interview whispering the name “Garth” over and over trying to remember it, knowing he’ll forget it anyway. “Lets get this over with” he says to himself as he chimes the door standing in front of the door preparing for the worst.

The doors to the Challenger’s main science lab hissed open automatically as Cadet Douglas pressed the chime, apparently requiring no permission to enter.

Although it was located on deck one, the flagship science lab was starkly different from the other areas of the ship’s premiere deck. Whereas the bridge, observation lounge, and captain’s ready room were kept neat and tidy, Garth’s workspace was a scrapyard of miscellaneous metal parts, half-constructed analysis equipment, and seemingly unattended bubbling test tubes and beakers. Walking through the space would require some careful maneuvering as to not knock anything from their precarious perches at the edges of the long, low tables that lined the room.

Lieutenant Junior Grade Garth was hunched over a lab station at the back of the room. The sound of the door opening behind him made Garth jump, and he instinctively dropped the beaker he had been holding. With a CLASH it shattered on the metal floor, spilling some unknown chemical concoction across the deck. Garth stared at the pool for a second in horror, his eyes hidden behind a pair of large black goggles. Then, the chemical burst into flames.

“Grab that Class B fire extinguisher!” Garth yelped as he hobbled back from the flames that had trapped him in the corner of the lab. Garth didn’t give any indication of where the extinguisher was… Douglas would have to find it amidst the clutter.

OOC: Welcome aboard Scott! I’m looking forward to writing with you! Great first post, you’re a natural! I have two things to mention real quick:

1.) After each post on STF, we “sign off” with a character signature like the one I did at the end of the IC section of my post above. This makes it easier to keep track of where one person’s writing ends and another begins. It includes your rank, character name, and department. So Douglas’ might look like:

2.) If you go to the “Profile” tab, you will be able to add a background/backstory for your character. This is a great place to put in a detailed physical description, general personality traits, and medical/psychological information for the CMO and CNS (head doctor and ship’s councilor) to draw from in your threads with them. These pages can help someone get a feel for your character. Cadets also sometimes includes things such as “got great grades at the Academy” (or the opposite) to give their DH some background into the cadet’s resume, if you will.
