Adinah lips twitched a bit at the Lieutenant’s last comment, “I have found it to come in handy on occasion.” Her own comment caused a brief flash of memory to run before Adinah’s eyes, but she was able to push it away easy enough.

“Emergency medicine is a difficult field,” Adinah stated instead, her voice conveying that she meant much more than academic rigor. Her own experience as an emergency medic had been harsh. “Do you find that your knowledge in alternative medicine comes in use often? I’ll admit to not knowing much of it myself.”

Leaning back ever so slightly, Tija considered the question for a brief moment. “It depends on the reason why somebody walks into sickbay. Lets say if somebody broke a bone, the osteoregenerator is the tool of choice. But there are other things were it’s my opinion we don’t always need to take pills or the like right away. For example, I saved a number of herbal teas in the replicator that my mentor on Bajor taught me. There is one that has a calming effect and another that settles your stomach very effectively. So in cases like that I prefer to try alternative medicine first before prescribing sleeping pills for example.”

“Do you ever teach anything on alternative medicines or try and make sure the doctors under your command know some of it? I imagine it could be helpful or at least prevent mix ups like when an alternative medicine might make a more standard one dangerous or less effective?” Adinah asked, curiosity growing. Alternative medicine to her had always been something of simply a softer form of medicine, effective but perhaps unrefined. After all medicine generally came from plants and the like in the first place, but because she’d always considered modern medicine to be more refined she hadn’t bothered to learn too much.

Tija nodded and then answered, “I always make sure to take precise notes of any treatment and when it comes to herbal medication I will add a note to it if they could cause side effects with other medications. But it is very rare that that would be the case. As for teaching: So far I haven’t. At least not on a mandatory basis. Yet I’m definitely open and happy to teach anyone who wants to learn more about it. Even though I’m currently the acting Chief Medical Officer, I’m only the assistant and thus can’t make changes to the curriculum on my own. But I will bring it up to the CMO once they have fully recovered.” With a small smile she added, “Thank you for your interest and initiative, Cadet.”
