USS Challenger
Main Sim - Bridge

SnipEmmy stood and turned to focus on each cadet in turn as they provided her the information she requested. She’d never liked how the bridge was positioned so that her back was to the crew; it made it difficult to hear them. “Thank you, cadets,” she responded, her tone sincere. “Cadet Taurean, let’s see what we can do to make contact as we’re en route. Cadet Rainns, contact the mining company for a status update from their end as well as the personnel jackets for those assigned to the mine.”

Taking advantage of the downtime between missions, Max had been doing his rounds checking in on the different departments. Finally taking a break, he had made his way back to the bridge to see if they had heard anything from command yet.
The turbolift doors opened right as the Captain was giving her orders.
“What did I miss Captain?”
Cmdr. Harkness - XO
“Aye, Captain.” Anders responded to his orders with a low affirmation, his hands jumping to work at the con before the words left his mouth. He kept his head down when the Challenger’s first officer came aboard, working on a transmission.
Assuming the EM storms would cause subspace interference to dead-stop the attempted communication, the cadet tried several different versions of the same message. First a general comm was sent, bearing the ship name and location, requesting to re-establish transmission and for more information. Then Anders transferred that message’s vital information into morse code and sent out a comm in that fashion as well.
“First messages sent, Captain. Awaiting a response now,” He announced not a minute later.
Still uncertain of response probability, Anders began preliminary work to translate both of his messages into an EM pulse via waveguides. This would draw some power from the deflector array, but might stand a better chance of cutting through EM storms on the moon’s surface. It could take the miners a little while to decipher the messages, but even that could save time from brute-forcing regular subspace transmissions through those same storms. All the cadet could do now was wait, briefly, for a response. Anders’ knuckles began turning white from the pressure of gripping the sides of his con, now playing the waiting game as calculations ran regarding the feasibility of his idea. In doing so, he drafted how to request permission from Captain Davis to try such a thing, nervous to please, and to do well.
The waiting and the uncertainty were enough to drive the anxious Taurean mad.

Since she was still turned around looking at the cadets at the various consoles, Emmy could watch as Harkness made his way from the turbo lift onto the bridge. She nodded in greeting and then quickly gave him a rundown of what they knew so far, ending with they were waiting to see if Taurean’s attempts to contact the colony were successful. She added another question to her previous list, “how far out are we?”

Nodding wordlessly at the Captain’s orders, Rainns sent an automated inquiry as to the status of the mining facility and faculty. After finishing he leaned back slightly and anxiously waited for a response.

In no particular order the results were:
In distance, the Challenger was around 5 light years away from the destination. At warp 8 they should arrive in a little under two days.
The flurry of communications soon overwhelmed the queue as it were but first was the report from the mining company. The moon was a mineral rich hunk of ice, habitable but barely. The local administrator was an Andorian femal by the name of Charl Oeuss. Charl had been with the company for many year and had a proven record of being level headed and pragmatic. She was not known to be one prone to panic or trip emergency systems without cause.
Her next in command was also an Andorian. His name was Ressis Th’shiarhen. Known to be a relatively austere man little was available on his personal life but he, too, had multiple commendations for productivity and behavior.
The bookkeeper/quartermaster at the station was a Ferengi named Lobac. Male, and, well, Ferengi. Part of the mining company had been purchased by Ferengi investors and, in addition to ensuring that the profits from the minerals were properly accounted for, was there to ensure that Charl didn’t stray too far from established productivity quotas.
The chief of security at the station was Zesen Borefar, a Bolian. Known to be the most affable of the bunch, she was none the less dependable and had a good record. There were a few blemishes, however, from when she looked the otherway and let some of the other miners sneak contraband into the bunks that was discovered during a routine inspection.
The remaining 8 members at the station were miners of various levels of experience and of various ethnic background. The majority were Denebian likely recruited from the surrounding system.
From the tape, it was clear that Ressis had been the one who sent the initial distress signal, but when the message made its way back from the station, it was Charl who spoke. “Greetings,” she responded with a weak attempt at a smile through the static of the poor signal. “I am … someone was .... attention.”

Even though it was simply a voice link (OOC: I think?), Emmy turned quickly and centered herself in front of the view screen out of habit. She had never been good at concentrating on voices to begin with and the static-filled message was posing a particular challenge. Her eyes closed as she concentrated and then spoke slowly in response, “this is Captain Davis of the USS Challenger. We received a distress signal from your station. What is your status?”
