Korczak’s demeanor didn’t change, nor did his expression. He simply asked “And why do you think they believed that to be?”

Emmy’s confusion slowly became evident in her previously neutral expression. Her brows furrowed as she studied Korczak. “I already said that I have experience with salvage operations and that is the mission to which the Challenger was assigned.”

IC: Korczak’s head tilted slightly and he said “And I already said that those missions are not common for an Academy ship, so salvage expertise would not seem to be priority qualification for the posting. So again I ask… why do you believe Star Fleet chose you for this role?”

Emmy shifted slightly in her chair, the only sign of the discomfort that Korczak’s question had placed upon her. “The Challenger was being assigned to a salvage mission, so those qualifications did make sense for that,” she pointed out. “But perhaps Starfleet believed that it would be a good fit for me. Perhaps they had no one else.” Her tone took a slightly flustered edge by the end of her response. It was clear that she was not used to questioning the motives of Starfleet Command.

To our wonderful new cadets, a “bump” is a gentle reminder that a player may have missed responding to a post. Since the default view shows posts from the last week, it can be helpful to either send the player a link to the missed post via Discord or post like this to bring it back onto the default view. I usually prefer to reach out via Discord (if I know who the person is on there), but I wanted to take this opportunity to provide an explanation. :)

Korczak’s blank face looked at her, again waiting a few heartbeats after she had finished speaking, before he said “I see.” And his eyes seemed as if they were searching for something in her own, but he was not finding what he sought. “And if I said there were multiple candidates for the post, would your response change? And do you consider yourself to be… ‘a good fit’ for the Challenger?”

“I’m very organized?” Emmy offered, a hint of desperation sneaking into her tone as she sought for the words that Korczak wanted her to say so that she could get back to evaluating the various aspects of her new assignment. She took a deep breath, feeling the cool air rushing into her nose and the heated air escaping from between her slightly parted lips. “I have exemplary evaluations and I have been very successful navigating a variety of novel situations. Salvage operations sounds routine, but there are frequently many competing desires to handle. While I have not served in an Academy position in the past, there is significant overlap in the skill set required.” Her voice had returned to its more cool affection as she provided the assessment of Starfleet’s reasoning for placing her in the CO position. If this didn’t satisfy Korczak, she thought, her next recommendation would be that he speak to Starfleet directly.

Korczak nodded slightly, and said “Quite logical and sound reasoning, Captain. I would assume much of that same evidence was taken into consideration, as well. But to my last question. Do you consider this a good fit for you? I mean… are you happy being assigned here, Captain?”
