As if to punctuate his statement, the door to Davis’ quarters slid open, revealing the interior to the collection of officers on the other side. The furnishings were fairly standard with little regard for personalization or unnecessary objects. Everything seemed to have a place. Well, except for the sofa and coffee table, which had been pushed to one side of the living space to make room for the larger table with enough seats for the senior staff and anyone else who cared to join the game.

A few seconds after the door opened, Emmy appeared beside it. She was dressed very casually in a pair of light gray pants and a maroon sweatshirt with the logo of Starfleet Academy on it. Her blonde hair was pulled back into a slight ponytail, quite different from her characteristic on-duty style of wearing it loose around her face. Perhaps most notable were the fluffy slippers encasing her feet; they appeared to be somewhat in the shape of tribbles.

She studied the group and then finally stated, “come in.” The words seemed unnecessary by virtue of her invitation and the door opening, but it seemed like people always required that confirmation that their entrance was permitted. Without waiting to see if that was satisfactory, she turned on her heel and made her way to the table. She indicated the pushed aside coffee table with a hand. “You may place your food there…” she instructed and then remembered the necessary politeness. “Please.” It befuddled her why the crew thought they needed to bring something when she had a perfectly good replicator. “Help yourself to any beverages or food that you require and then make your way to the table where I will explain the rules.”

She punctuated her instruction with assuming her own seat at one side. She calmly opened the deck of playing cards and methodically shuffled them as she waited for the other players to take their seats. “We will be playing Texas hold ‘em, which is a style of the old Earth game poker,” she began. She continued through her explanation of the rules of the game, providing a succinct summary. “The dealer button will begin with Commander Harkness. The player to his left will post the small blind, which is $5. The player to the left of that player will post the big blind, which is $10. Are there any questions before we begin? I will deal the cards for each hand.”

Garth grunted in surprise at the captain’s laid-back appearance, then subconsciously glanced down at his blue sciences uniform and the black lab coat he was wearing on top of it, which smelled faintly of chemicals from the day’s experiments. “Hmph,” he huffed, apparently displeased that he had not been explicitly informed of the informality of the event.

After dumping his sack of produce unceremoniously on the coffee table, Garth hobbled over to the seat to the left of Harkness, which Davis had labeled as the “small blind” position. He plopped down with a groan and leaned his cane against the table. “I can’t say that I’ve participated in much… ‘Texas hold them’ in my time. On Tellar Prime, the most popular card game is most similar to the human game of… Pit, that’s right.”

“But, he said with a snort, “I consider myself to be a quick study.”

As she entered the Captain’s quarters, Aizala was grateful that she had opted for something to wear that was at least semi-casual. She was wearing a pair of tights that matched her skin colour and simple navy blue ballerina slippers. The dress she wore was navy blue as well. It had short, semi-see-through sleeves. The top fitted snugly, nicely accentuating her slender body, with a neckline just below her collarbones. The skirt was wide and ended just below her knees. Her hair was - for once - open and fell in soft waives down her back. Only the right side of her hair was pinned back with a bow that matched her dress, leaving her Bajoran earring clearly visible.

After placing the plate she had brought carefully on the table, Aizala helped herself to a glass of water from the replicator and then sat down to the left of the Captain. Not because she thought she deserved that place, but if she wasn’t mistaken it would leave her to be the ast one to play and hopefully by then she had at least a vague idea how this game worked. Taking a sip of her water she waited silently for everyone else to take their seat. She knew that she probably should say something, but she didn’t know what, so instead she merely observed.

“Thanks Captain,” Max said as he walked in. He made his way over to the replicator. “One glass tumbler with ice.”

Taking the glass he pulled out his seat at the table. Setting the glass on one of the coasters, he poured himself a glass out of his bottle. “If anyone else would like a drink before we get started, I have a nice aged Tennessee whisky for those who would be interested.”

Cmdr. Harkness - XO

The door chime sounded at that time. Waiting outside was Keval. He was still dressed in his uniform, but with the tunic open to show the green shirt underneath

“Hello everyone,” the Andorian said in greeting. “I’m reporting for the social engagement as ordered. Apologies for being late, but you can never be too careful leaving unattended cadets next to a matter-antimatter warp core. Who knows what they will get up to?”

“I did manage to replicate some extra food - two dishes actually,” nodding to what he was carrying. “An Andorian specialty call imbrak - it’s very sweet, but you should avoid swallowing the seeds. And an ancient Earth snack food called chewing gum.”

“Quite an amazing snack food,” Keval said, as he picked up a stick gum and started chewing it. “It has no nutritional value whatsoever - you chew it to obtain the flavour it has been infused with, but never actually swallow the gum itself. It then serves as adhesive, whether you want it to or not. Fascinating. I researched human flavours for snack foods, and have infused these with salt and vinegar. Very interesting.”

Emmy watched silently as the members of her senior staff filed into her quarters, collected beverages for themselves, and settled at the table. Without a word, she got to her feet and made her way to her replicator, repeating Harkness’ order. Returning to the table, she set the glass in front of her place and then slid it to him with a nod to express her interest in sharing the beverage with him. She had once been told that it would inspire camaraderie. Hopefully it was at least a palatable whiskey, or else this would be a very long evening.

Once everyone had situated themselves, she turned to the Tellarite. “You must place the small blind,” she repeated to him, indicating her interest in beginning the game. Her attention quickly shifted to the COS. “And you, the big blind. Once you have placed those, I will deal the cards.” Beside her sat the CE, then the CNS, and finally the CMO. The positions came to her much faster than the names, despite the casual environment, and so she didn’t force herself to recall them for now.

She paused for a moment to allow the two officers to follow her instructions before reaching firmly for the deck of cards in front of her to deal two face down to each officer.

XO (DEALER): Ten of Diamonds, Ace of Spades (Remaining: $1,000)
CSO: Queen of Clubs, Four of Spades (Remaining: $995)
COS: Two of Hearts, King of Hearts (Remaining: $990)
CE: Four of Diamonds, Seven of Spades (Remaining: $1,000)
CNS: Ten of Clubs, King of Diamonds (Remaining: $1,000)
CMO: Nine of Clubs, Queen of Diamonds (Remaining: $1,000)

POT: $15

Her smooth dealing complete, Emmy carefully positioned the remainder of the deck in front of her. “You each have $1,000 in chips in front of you in various denominations.” She then turned her attention to the CE, who was first up for this round of betting. “You may fold, where you pay nothing, or you may call, where you meet the big blind amount of $20, or you may raise by doubling amount of the big blind. Begin.”

OOC: I’m going to try to keep this moving every few days, feel free to jump in with your character’s reactions, etc. :)

Nijix twisted her glass on the table. The coke, a timeless earth classic, jingled the rounded ice cubes about. She had placed her snack chips with the rest of the food assortment as indicated by the CO. Her mind lingered on the forced and rehearsed speech pattern for a bit. She felt the woman wasn’t having much fun which led her to believe this was formality rather than social. It bugged Nijix, but she pushed it away. It would ruin the fun if she didn’t.

She placed the bet as she was told when her turn came around. Her eyes shifted to to study everyone. Raji decided to remain quiet in her head. From his history, unless it was a job, he preferred to avoid gambling games. A history of addiction discouraged her imagination from summoning him forth. So she was on her own for now.

(OOC: I’m guessing the $20 was a typo :P Big blind was $10.)

“Hmm....,” said Keval, studying his two cards. From what he understood, they were not good cards, but it would be fun to stay in for the first round. He placed two $5 chips “I believe I will call.” (OOC: My pot is now $990).
