Moving her gaze from the severed hand, to Richard’s body and then back to Garth, Tija replied in a slightly detached voice, “It was necessary and I’m sure Richard would have understood. And while I won’t condone everything for the sake of science or medicine, there are times when critical situations call for drastic actions.” After a brief pause during which she studied the readouts from the antifungal treatment, she continued, “And lets be honest: This,” she gestured towards the Petri dishes, “gives us the safest way of trying out treatments. Unless necessary I don’t want anyone taking any risks by getting within reach of either of the infected crew members. And until we find a treatment I’m not sure who much we can do anyway.” Holding back a resigned sigh, she added, “And while the antifungal treatment you tried so far didn’t do much against the parasite within Richard’s body, it might still have an effect on Lieutenant Torrirs and Cadet Osten. It may buy us some time buy slowing down the growth of the organism.”
Garth puffed up his chest a little at Tija’s praise. “I’m glad you approve, Lieutenant. But medicine isn’t my specialty, so I’m happy to let you lead further attempts at a cure. I’ll support you in any way you need, of course.”
Tija then turned around so that she was looking directly at Richard’s and the readouts over his biobed. She was chewing on her lower lip, though nobody would be able to see that because of the mask she was wearing. She didn’t like at all what she was seeing and her imagination started to conjure up the most horrific scenarios. Eventually she said more to herself than anybody else, “Fungi generally grow exceptionally well in warm and moist environments … His body temperature is problematic as well …” While lost in thought, the doctor started to tap her right food on the ground. “So why not try something simple. It’s not like I have to worry about causing any long term damage to Richard’s body.”
With a soft sigh she walked briskly towards the nearest tray with hyposprays and loaded one with 3,000mg Ibuprofen. The dose was a lot higher than she would ever administer to a living human, but in this case she didn’t have to worry about kidney failure or giving him an over dose. Yet it might reduce his temperature. With the hypospray in hand, she walked over to his biobed. =/\=Computer, create a small opening in the force field surrounding Ensign Richard; large enough for my hand and where his shoulder is.=/\= Once there was an opening, she reached inside and quickly injected Richard before withdrawing her hand again right way. She then said, =/\=Computer, close the opening again. And then lower the humidity within the force filed to 0% and the temperature to 0°C. =/\=

Garth’s mouth pulled downward in a thoughtful frown. “Brilliant, doctor. If we can expel the infection while only dehydrating the crewmates, that would definitely be preferable to pumping them full of chemicals.”

Emmy was carefully listening, trying to follow the conversation that was drastically out of her area of specialty. Garth summarized the decision tree perfectly, however, and she could understand that was certainly a superior choice if it would work. She nodded her agreement but otherwise remained silent and out of the way to allow them to work.
