SnipDoctor Tija had just opened her mouth to reply to the Captain, when they heard Garth voice through the intercom. So instead of talking, she closed her mouth and listened carefully. His brief assessment of the situation matched her own from what she had read in the files a moment ago.
Turning towards the Captain the moment Garth stopped talking, she said, “I agree with Lieutenant Garth. As long as the infected crew members are restricted the danger for the rest of the crew should be minimal. Though in addition to security guards at the doors, I would suggest that everyone who enters sickbay should put on a minimal layer o protective gear. Meaning gloves, mask and glasses. That doesn’t eliminate all threats of infection, of course. Yet it gives more protection to the little bare skin Starfleet uniforms reveal.” After the briefest of pauses Tija conclued, “And to be of any real help, I have to get inside sickbay. So with the minimal risk to the crew at this point, overriding the security log sounds like the logical next step.”
Lt. Tija, Asst. CMO
OOC: Thanks for pushing this along, Ben.

Emmy listened carefully to first the CSO and then the ACMO. While she was certainly impatient to get the situation resolved, it wouldn’t make sense to rush the situation and make a suboptimal decision for the health of the crew. She found herself nodding in agreement as the ACMO spoke and as soon as she finished, she spoke:
=/\= Computer, override lockdown on Sickbay, authorization Davis-Delta-Four. =/\=
As the computer chirped its assent, the doors to Sickbay noticed that there were people milling around outside and slid open. In a rare dose of manners, Emmy gestured for Tija to enter the room first and managed to allow her several minutes to get her bearings before questioning, “where would I find the safety gear that you suggested?” It made her uncomfortable to admit, but she was completely unfamiliar with the layout of supplies in Sickbay.

The moment the doors swished open in front of them and she saw the Captain’s gesture, Tija walked briskly into sickbay. Yet she didn’t walk far in and instead stopped just to the right of the doors so she wouldn’t block them. Standing there she took note of where everybody was before walking to a cabinet close to the nearest biobed. In order to get whatever she was looking for, she had to turn her back towards the majority of the sickbay, something that made her incredibly uncomfortable. But the faster she found what she was looking for the faster she could turn around.
So when the Captain asked for the safety gear, Tija was already taking the few steps back towards her with everything in hand that the Captain would need. “Here they are,” she said as she handed a mask, glasses and a pair of gloves to the Captain. While putting on those things herself, she continued, “If anybody else comes in, you can find the glasses and masks on the top shelf of that cabinet and gloves in different shapes and sizes on the one below.” She gestured with her gloved right hand toward the cupboard she just rummaged through.
Without waiting for a reply from the Captain, the Doctor walked over towards Garth and if he wasn’t already wearing protective gear she would hand him the same things as the Captain. “Any recent changes since you added the newest data to the files?” she asked without preamble. While Tija was keen to examine the patients herself, she knew that getting the most recent update first would be beneficial and allow her to get a much better idea of the whole situation. Especially considering that she hadn’t been on Sickback since the away team returned and had instead treated people elsewhere on the ship.

Emmy couldn’t help but think that Tija was truly a woman after her own heart with the brisk efficiency that she presented. She eagerly reached for the protective gear but slowed down to carefully don it, ensuring that she was as protected as she could be. She glanced at the indicated locations to ensure that she knew where the gear was located for future reference and she was about to nod her affirmation, but before she could, Tija was already off speaking with the CSO. Her lips pressed together in a small smirk as she made her way over behind the two, careful not to interrupt their conversation, but instead listen in to Garth’s report.

Garth and the two medical NEs milling about the sickbay had already donned protective gear before they had attempted to perform surgery on the zombified Richards. As the newcomers approached, Garth stood from the stool at the lab station with some difficulty. “Lieutenant, Captain,” he said gruffly as a way of greeting.
The tellarite shrugged and motioned to the petri dishes displayed on the lab station. “Still waiting to see if samples of the parasite’s nerve tissue are susceptible to antifungal medication. But no reaction yet, so I’m skeptical about how effective they’ll be, even intravenously.” Garth’s eyes darted to two locations behind Tija and Davis. “Also please don’t be alarmed, but I had to dismember the former Ensign Richards’ hand when the parasite inside him tried to infect me. I don’t take desecrating a corpse lightly, but it was necessary to prevent the infection from spreading, and allowed me to gather the samples of the parasite’s tissues.”
(Lt. J.g. Garth, CSO)
The test results showed that the parasite didn’t react as well as had hoped to the antifungle treatment. While it did show some promise the tendrils still had some control over the lower nervous system of poor dismembered Richards. While not breathing, or having a heart rate any longer, the previous medic still showed some signs of life. The restraints, however kept him in check.
The biobed showed an increase in core body temp, likely a hold over from the fever, but Tija would know that if that temp increased to held steady for any length of time, the poor NE Richards would be more or less cooked.

Emmy eyed Richards’ body as it twitched and resisted the urge to visibly display her discomfort with that situation. She studied the restraints for a moment and used the knowledge that they secured the corpse well to ease her swelling anxiety about the situation. She gave Garth a curt nod in response to his concern regarding desecrating the corpse. It seemed as though he had considered the options and chosen an adequate one to keep the crew safe. Her gaze shifted to Tija as she waited to hear what the CMO had to say.

Moving her gaze from the severed hand, to Richard’s body and then back to Garth, Tija replied in a slightly detached voice, “It was necessary and I’m sure Richard would have understood. And while I won’t condone everything for the sake of science or medicine, there are times when critical situations call for drastic actions.” After a brief pause during which she studied the readouts from the antifungal treatment, she continued, “And lets be honest: This,” she gestured towards the Petri dishes, “gives us the safest way of trying out treatments. Unless necessary I don’t want anyone taking any risks by getting within reach of either of the infected crew members. And until we find a treatment I’m not sure who much we can do anyway.” Holding back a resigned sigh, she added, “And while the antifungal treatment you tried so far didn’t do much against the parasite within Richard’s body, it might still have an effect on Lieutenant Torrirs and Cadet Osten. It may buy us some time buy slowing down the growth of the organism.”
Tija then turned around so that she was looking directly at Richard’s and the readouts over his biobed. She was chewing on her lower lip, though nobody would be able to see that because of the mask she was wearing. She didn’t like at all what she was seeing and her imagination started to conjure up the most horrific scenarios. Eventually she said more to herself than anybody else, “Fungi generally grow exceptionally well in warm and moist environments … His body temperature is problematic as well …” While lost in thought, the doctor started to tap her right food on the ground. “So why not try something simple. It’s not like I have to worry about causing any long term damage to Richard’s body.”
With a soft sigh she walked briskly towards the nearest tray with hyposprays and loaded one with 3,000mg Ibuprofen. The dose was a lot higher than she would ever administer to a living human, but in this case she didn’t have to worry about kidney failure or giving him an over dose. Yet it might reduce his temperature. With the hypospray in hand, she walked over to his biobed. =/\=Computer, create a small opening in the force field surrounding Ensign Richard; large enough for my hand and where his shoulder is.=/\= Once there was an opening, she reached inside and quickly injected Richard before withdrawing her hand again right way. She then said, =/\=Computer, close the opening again. And then lower the humidity within the force filed to 0% and the temperature to 0°C. =/\=
