The NE’s body thrashed and groaned as he, it, struggled against the restraints. Whatever humanity was left in the creature had long since gone, his eyes cold and dead not really focused on either the scientist or the councilor.Eventually the hand came off from the sawing. It flapped around for a little bit before it died wherever it was placed, but the stump is what was perhaps the most interesting as inky black tendrils, no bigger than a hair, writhed and wriggled in the muscle tissue.

Korczak stepped forward and said “Back away Lieutenant. Now.” and the =/\= Computer. Activate Isolation protocols for all of Sickbay. Authorization Korczak Alpha Indigo Gamma Five-Seven-Seven =/\= He then turned back to Garth and said in his still flat and un-flustered manner “Who else did he touch, or who touched him?”
Korczak, CNS
Garth yanked the dismembered hand grasping his forearm free and huffed as he shambled over to a nearby medical cart, tossing the writhing appendage onto a surgical tray. Refocusing his goggles on the tendrils sprouting from the former ensign’s wrist, Garth snatched a scalpel from beside the tray and sliced through the small tendrils so they fell to the sterile metal beneath them. Then Garth used a pair of tweezers to swiftly pluck each of them up and place them in a series of petri dishes he procured from the medical cart.
As he did all this, Garth spoke to Korczak without turning to face him, instead focusing on his work. “Oh calm yourself, Commander. I and the surgical technicians are wearing protective aprons, gloves, and face masks. Lieutenant Torrirs and Ensign Osten are infected, but currently sedated and restrained. All other crew members that had contact with Richards, or sickbay for that matter, are currently onboard the Potterfield.”
“As for the hostile,” Garth snorted, “it’s also restrained. Although I hope it doesn’t find a way to break free, because your isolation protocols just locked out the security team I called to help handle such a possibility.”

Garth picked up one of the petri dishes and placed it in his large palm as he wobbled over to a medical scanner. “Computer, analyze,” Garth barked as he slid the sample of the Potterfield lifeform’s tendril into the chamber. He was hoping the machine might be able to provide suggestions for treatment now that he had isolated an appendage of the infection.

OOC: Geoff had to take a LOA for a couple of days, but thank you for keeping active!

The computer took a little bit to respond. When it did it reported that the sample looked like it was a basic nerve series. The way they were jutting out of the arm would lead Garth to surmise that these tendrils had hijacked the nervous system of the host, rendering the body of the deceased, for a lack of a better term, a meat puppet.

Garth huffed as he squinted at the readouts. “Groundbreaking results, tellar-primeshattering really” he grumbled with sarcasm. Turning to the sickbay staff hovering nearby, Garth growled, “we know what we’re looking at, now we just have to find a way to kill it.”
Garth scrolled through his PaDD for a moment, eyes scanning the screen rapidly as he supplemented what limited medical knowledge he had. Throwing open a medical supply locker, Garth rummaged through it rather roughly, sending vials and hyposprays clattering to their sides on the shelves.
“It’s acting like a subcutaneous mycosis,” Garth said to no one in particular as he scavenged, “so it should be susceptible to steroid alcohol organic molecule inhibition. If we can target ergosterol (maybe through the disruption of squalene epoxidase) in the cell membranes of the parasite, we should be able to poison it while leaving the crew largely unharmed since their cells rely primarily on cholesterol instead…” He paused to think, then continued his search. “Or, we could hinder the creation of glucan in the fungal cell wall by inhibiting the 1,3-Beta-glucan synthase…” Garth might not know much about medicine, but he sure knew a lot about biology and chemistry.
Garth eventually pulled out three hyposprays of pharmaceutical fungicide, one containing a polyene-based solution, another with an allylamine treatment, and the last with echinocandins. Returning to the remaining petri dishes with the parasite’s severed nerves inside, Garth administered a different antifungal to each, then hunched down to stare eagerly and watch for any reaction through his magnification goggles.

Korczak’s activation of the isolation protocols immediately sent an alert to the bridge. As the cadet reported in on it, Emmy let out a perturbed huff. “I’m going down there to see what’s going on,” she commented, her voice a clear staccato as she made her way to the turbolift. Within moments, she found herself standing outside of Sickbay’s doors.
=/\= Davis to Sickbay. Report. =/\=

Garth glanced up at the sound of the captain’s voice, then over his shoulder at Korczak. “You want to get that, Commander? I think it’s for you.”

The startling silence from inside Sickbay had Emmy slapping her hand against her comm badge again in no time.
=/\= Davis to Tija. Report to Sickbay. =/\=
Given the CMO was incapacitated, it was likely she would be needed there anyway.
