Korczak leaned back in his chair slightly and looked up at the Commanding Officer. After an appraising look, he said “Please, Captain. Have a seat.” and he indicated the seating area in front of the desk. Pushing the glasses up on his nose in a seemingly unconscious manner, he then said “As I am sure you have many things on your plate, as they say, I won’t trouble you with small talk. So if you will ask me your questions, I will endeavor to answer them and then we can do your assessment, if you like. My time is yours, Captain.” and he stood and came around the desk to be seated after her.

Emmy found herself momentarily distracted by Korczak’s unconscious adjustment to his glasses and she found it made her even more irate about the unnecessary accessory. If they were to pose a distraction to the wearer or to the observer, that made them even less optimal. She let out a little huff of air again and took the indicated seat, sitting formally on the front portion of the chair. She rested her hands, palm down, on her thighs as she studied the counselor briefly. “I appreciate your efficiency,” she responded, her tone slightly more sincere than it had been thus far. “I do not have any questions that cannot be addressed by your personnel file at this time.”

Korczak sat and, unlike any other Counselor in this sitaution, he simply looked at the Captain. He was a nondescript man, seemingly every bit of average in appearance and build. What set him apart here, other than the glasses, was the fact that he had no PaDD; no means of note taking of any kind. He simpky sat and looked at Davis, a blank expression on his face. “I see. I will say that my file will provide little in the way of an introduction, but so be it. So to your assessment.” and he shifted slightly in his chair, his eyes never leaving her face.

“What brought you to this particular duty station, Captain? And by that I mean, was it your choice to be here? And if so, why choose this posting?”

Korczak, CNS

Emmy pondered briefly if she should have a reaction to his statement. It didn’t seem like an efficient use of time to argue the counselor’s point, although she had not encountered a situation yet where a personnel file did not give her the introductory information necessary to accomplish a task with a particular individual. Dismissing that train of thought as her peripheral vision caught Korczak’s slight movement, she spent a moment formulating an answer to his question. She easily returned his steady gaze, her face devoid of any reaction or response to the encounter so far.

“I was assigned by Starfleet as I have experience in salvage operations,” she responded, simply. She didn’t need to add that the Challenger had recently been assigned to a mission to salvage the Potterfield and thus it was an excellent fit for her skillset.

Davis, CO

“A background in salvage operations does not seem quite the qualification for assignment to a teaching vessel. As I am sure you can agree, salvage operations are rarely done by a vessel such as this. So outside of your experience with such matters, why do you think you were assigned here? This is, after all, a far cry from Command Operations, which is your specialty, if I am not mistaken.” The last part of his statement was not phrased as a question; but delivered as a statement of fact.
