Having completed the dreary task of her physical evaluation, it was time for Emmy to complete the mental aspect of the evaluation process. She soon found herself standing before Commander Korczak’s door and she immediately pressed the door chime. This would present an excellent opportunity to check multiple boxes off on her task list: the required evaluation as well as the perfunctory, but requisite introduction to a member of her new crew.

An oddly accented voice sounded out form inside and “Please come in.” and the door slid open and revealed a space unlike any other on the ship.

The office was lit in a more subdued manner than the rest of the ship; with the light coming from wall lamps rather than the typical overhead lighting and giving a less harsh, much warmer glow. Multiple bookcases with glass enclosed shelves lined one wall, filled with copies and originals of many texts on many different subjects, and a quick glance would show multiple languages as well. The desk was set at an angle against the opposite wall to the door in the corner, allowing for a large open space in the middle. Here there was a couch and a few chairs, one of which sat in front of and facing away from the desk. Pictures hung on the walls, some were even old photographs. Each depicted either places, individuals, or groups of people, and many were in black and white.

Seated at the desk was a plain looking human male with brown hair and brown eyes. He average looking; the kind of person that would be lost in a crowd of more than four or five people. He wore the blue uniform of the Science and Medical Sections, and Lieutenant Commander pips showed on his collar. There was one distinguishing feature about the man, however. Actual glasses were perched on his nose. He looked up, and a very odd accent issued forth, as if multiple accents were vying for control. “Hello, Captain. How may I help you?”

As the door slid open, Emmy briskly stepped through it and then frowned slightly as her eyes took time to adjust to the dimmer lighting inside the counselor’s office. Whatever would possess someone to not take advantage of the excellent visibility provided by the standard shipboard overhead lighting? Her frown deepened further as she noted the old-fashioned glasses on his nose and she let out an annoyed puff of air. Of course, she would have to end up with a counselor who clearly did not appreciate the advances of modern technology. She noticed the photographs and books, but quickly discarded them as needless memorabilia that she need not consider further.

Without entering much further, she balled her hands at her sides, focusing briefly on the slight dig of her nails into her palms. “My visit has two purposes,” she began, curtly. “First, I am endeavoring to meet each member of my senior staff. Second, I must complete the required evaluation upon change of station. ” She paused and then, with short, quick strides, made her way closer to Korczak’s desk. Holding out a small hand, she continued, “I am Captain Davis, the new commanding officer of the Challenger.” Her voice took on a slightly robotic tone, as though she was repeating something that she had been coached to say.

Appearance-wise, Emmy was not particularly notable: attractive, but not gorgeous. Slightly smaller than average, she stood formally, with perfect, stiff posture. Her blonde hair was cut plainly and uniformly to her chin, not one piece out of place or daring to fall into her face. Her face was expressionless now that her initial distaste had passed; her brown eyes met Korczak’s steadily. The red-trimmed uniform fell neatly on her figure, again, nothing daring to be out of place.
