Keval noticed the cadet pale a bit, so he put on a grin and continued. “But that’s unlikely to happen. So keep working on interpreting the diagnostics, and we can continue enjoying this learning moment without having to worry about temperature changes. Let me know at the end of your shift what you have come up with.”

With that, Keval went back to his brooding.

Cadet Grayson Paul strode through Main Engineering, carrying his tool kit as he prepared to head out to his various assignments throughout the course of his shift. His path brought him past the new Chief, the blue Andorian with the curious antenna, and, since Grayson had not yet introduced himself to Lt. Vras, he veered to the side and caught the last part of the exchange the Lieutenant had had with the Cadet.

“Lt. Vras?” Grayson stood at attention beside the Andorian, “I’d like to introduce myself. I’m Grayson Paul, it’s an honor to meet you, sir.”

“Cadet Paul! Excellent,” Keval said, as he looked over at the engineering cadet. Giving no time for further introductions, Keval continued. “Where are you heading off to?”

“Deck four, sir.” Grayson hefted his tool kit for the Chief to see, “The torpedo and phaser systems are due for their monthly inspection and quarterly maintenance. I’m sure I’ll be spending the next several days working on those systems with Ensign Grunhilde. Is there anything else you’d like me to do?”

“I’ll join you,” Keval said, picking up his tricorder and kit. “There’s probably a leadership manual in some policy office that says it’s a good idea for senior officers to review their junior officers work.”

Keval’s antennae curved upward to show how much - or how little? - he agreed with that approach.

“Written by someone who has probably never had to work as a starship’s actual engineering officer —” (that probably gave a much better clue over the Keval’s earlier expression, or at least what Keval wanted the cadet to think Keval thought about it) “— but since I recall how much I used to hate my supervisor looking over my shoulder, I think it’s a great way for you to meet your new Chief Engineer.”

Keval started walking towards the door from Engineering, clearly expecting Cadet Paul to follow. “Plus,” he called out, “this will probably help improve my mood.”
