Garth steepled his thick fingers in contemplation. “That’s the beauty of science, Counselor. My contributions to our understanding of the universe will inform other scientists, and by contributing to the continuation of that knowledge, my legacy will be immortal. Even if it is eventually only a minuscule building block that supports a more advanced understanding.”

Korczak nodded once again and then asked “And what is your biggest concern with dealing with Cadets on what is seen as, but may is not always so, a simple learning cruise prior to going to the main fleet?”

“I’m not a particularly big fan of hand-holding,” Garth grumbled, “so I hope that my cadets will be competent enough to act as if this is their first placement, rather than some simulation in a holodeck. There are real stakes here, we have real missions to accomplish. Reasonable assistance is fine, but if I find myself teaching basics… that would be frustrating.”

“Understandably so, I believe.” Korczak replied. He paused for a moment, simply looking at the Scientist with a blank expression on his face. Finally he spoke up and said “So what do you believe is your biggest personal obstacle as both a scientist and an instructor?”

Garth sighed. “All this talk of weaknesses is tiring. I wish you would take a strengths-based approach to your evaluation, counselor. But I suppose if I must reflect to identify yet another shortcoming, I do have the tendency to get “tunnel vision”. I focus intently on projects and ways of thinking that I have determined to be important and effective. I have little patience for self-doubt when a course of action has already been decided upon.”

Korczak peered at the Tellerite for some time before saying “I am not here to assess your strengths. Thats has been done by others prior to your being assigned here. My priority is trying to find out your weaknesses, whether or not those weaknesses are of a detriment to the ship and her crew, and to understand whether you are self-aware enough to realize that you do indeed have such weaknesses.” and he paused for a moment before continuing. “We have doen the frst to my satisfaction, the second is likely not significant, and lastly you seem to be. I will recommend that you make sure all of your section is versed in Tellarite custom and mannerisms, just to avoid any unnecessary conflict. Other than that, I believe we are done here Lieutenant Junior Grade. Unless you have any questions for me?”

Garth shook his head as he rocked forward to use the momentum to rise from the chair. “I believe we understand each other, counselor. I appreciate you meeting with me on such short notice. I should see to the lab, and make sure nothing drastic has occurred in my absence.” With that, Garth pivoted in space and shuffled toward the door.
