(SNIP)Nijix helped the XO place the officer onto the biobed, her body sore from the trip. She was glad to release her burden as she pulled away. Her mind drifted to the desire to clean up but resisted. She suspected Nylaa’s obsession in her past about cleanliness had caused this. Nijix stood to wait for more instruction. Until the infection was identified or at least learned about how it was spread, any ideas of hers weren’t going to help.
-Lt. Nijix Tavium, CoS
OOC: Since the CMO is on LOA…
IC: The infection scans of Richards, bless his soul, showed it to be a fungus or parasite of some sort that was entering the body and spreading tendrils through out his insides in a way not unlike the Sacculina carcini or Crab Hacker Barnacle. As the infection spread the body was naturally revolting causing the fever and other normal body reactions to being invaded by a host that was slowly trying to take control of motor function and hormone production.

“Find anything out yet Cadet? I’m hoping that we’ve finally figured out what is causing this infection, so hopefully we can finally put this to rest.”
Cmdr. Harkness - XO
Olly glanced up from the tricorder, nodding to the XO. “Sir, I am coming up with some preliminary findings here. Unfortunately, the cadet seems to have some sort of fungal infection. I’m not sure of anything more specific right now, but I can tell you that fungal infections tend to be a lot trickier to treat than a bacteria or even most viral infections.”
He made his way next to Dr. Torrirs, “Doctor, I think we’ve got something. If you’ll hold still for just a moment I need to confirm my suspicions that the cadet has passed his infection onto you.”
He waved the small tricorder wand over the doctor, glancing over the results which he expected would most likely show signs of the same fungus like creature currently inhabiting the cadets. Satisfied with the findings, he closed the tricorder and reached for several hyposprays which he set to collect blood samples from each of the infected crew members.
“Commander, I’m going to try to isolate the organism here but I think I could really use some help from Science to make things move more quickly. Once we identify the makeup of this thing I can make some guesses on what agents we can try to treat it.”
Cadet Oliver Scott, Medical
“Done,” Max said as he tapped his commbadge.
=^= Harkness to Lt Garth. Please report to sickbay. =^=
“In the meantime Cadet, we also need a way to identify who has been infected. Because we need to make sure that those who have come in contact with the infected patients are still clear of the fungus.”
Cmdr. Harkness - XO
=/\= Garth to Harkness. I’m on my way. =/\=
A few moments later, Chief Science Officer Garth shambled into sickbay, shuffling forward with his black cane supporting his left side. The stout tellarite man pursed his lips, which were partially obscured by his spindly facial hair. “I assume I have been summoned because you’ve completed your medical analysis of the parasite? Science has performed experiments on the sample of plant matter retrieved by the away mission, the results of which I just reported to the captain. We should be putting another away team together shortly, provided that you have determined that the risk of exposure to this infection is not…” his small eyes darted to the unconscious cadets Osten and Richards on the sickbay beds, “fatal.”
(Lt. J.g. Garth, CSO)
Nijix listened and kept inside the sickbay. No point in adding more rick until she knew what it was and if it was treatable. She mentally groaned at learning it was a fungal infection. These were the worse because they are so difficult to become rid of, a risk of coming back even after treatment.
She looked toward the XO for farther direction.
-Lt. Nijix Tavium, CoS
“Can’t speak to the fatality of the infection. But perhaps you can give us the cliffnotes version of what you found from the samples we brought back Lieutenant,” Max said looking at Garth. “Some of us were not privy to your prior report.”
Cmdr. Harkness - XO
Garth offered a ‘humph’ before pulling out his PADD and thumbing through it for a moment, squinting his eyes at the small screen in his large hand. “It’s an aggressive dicot invasive species. To put it in layman’s terms, it’s a xenoflora cross between a moss and a broadleaf plant. We’ve found that it’s susceptible to synthetic auxins, at least if applied topically. But I wouldn’t recommend injecting acid into anyone’s veins as a medical treatment.”
Richards gave a sharp gasp and an exhale of his death rattle, his body no longer able to handle the burden that had been placed upon it.
And there he lay, motionless, not a single sign of his life registering on the biobed’s read out, but something was there. A little something on the edge causing an echo of life, and yet no heartbeat or pulse. Something… Electrical.

“Well that certainly complicates things,” Garth mumbled under his breath as he witnessed Richards’ death throes. He slapped his comm badge. =/\= Garth to Science Lab One. Begin synthesizing the chemical weapon, and collaborate with security to identify a projectile means of administration. The Potterfield threat has been determined to be lethal and malicious. =/\=
(Lt. J.g. Garth, CSO)
Nijix listened to Garth’s explanation. It was such an odd creation because it sounded simple, but created so much destruction in the body. She considered tapping into Nylaa’s memories for any additional information. Before she could, her ears caught Richard’s death rattle and her head snapped over to his direction. When his monitor flatline, her own regret, and fear edged into her mind. She stared at his corpse for a few uncomfortable moments. It wasn’t uncommon for officers to die under Starfleet service. In fact, some long term officers had learned to expect when rather than if. A hard, cold truth to all of them.
When she heard Garth speak about coordinating with security, she nodded her understanding.
“I think Anderson and I should help, but I don’t want to further infect the ship. We’ve been cleared once, but I had to help bring Richards back.”
-Lt. Nijix Tavium, CoS
“What about the ones isolated in their own sick bay?” one brave NE asked the COS and CSO. “Shouldn’t we do something about them?”
