OOC: Welcome aboard Liam! So happy to have you with us! Great first post, and it looks like you’re picking things up quickly with your thread title and use of a character signature! I sent you an email with some additional information, so please let me know if it has not gotten to you! I’m looking forward to writing with you!

The Cadet would enter to find the lab in quite a state. This was nothing like at the academy; there, it was always neat and tidy with academics and students working and testing but always cleaning up after themselves. Kyneln couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow at the messy tellarite man who had barked his request without proper introduction.

“Ah, yes sir…” the cadet replied quickly scanning the room. Hypos no, decoupler no, strange purple liquid no… Kyneln maneuvered carefully around the bench that seemed to hold the biggest assortment of tools and equipment. “Got it” he announced as he picked up the stabiliser out of a small pool of a sticky substance. Wiping it on a nearby cloth he hurried to hand it to Garth.

OOC: Love this paragraph! (Ben)

“Kyneln Ril, Cadet, reporting as ordered Sir” he said introducing himself as he passed on the implement.

OOC: Thanks man, glad to be here!

Garth turned and swiped the handheld tool from Kyneln’s grasp with a gloved, meaty hand. The scientist paused as if considering returning to his work immediately, but then adjusted himself to squarely face the cadet. The magnifying goggles on his face whirred slightly as the lenses dilated, zooming in on Cadet Ril’s face as Garth stared up at him intently for a few long seconds.

“Ah yes,” Garth grumbled, “Cadet Ril. I read your file this morning. Whoever wrote it included some interesting notes in your psychological profile. I hope those judgements were made at the beginning of your time in San Francisco, not at the end.”

The cadet was slightly taken aback with the brashness of his commanding officers greeting, he felt sentenced without a trial. “Well Sir, I try to never read those things. The worst thing you can do to yourself is read an analysis about your problems and weaknesses.”

Garth tugged off his gloves and stuffed them into the inside pocket of the black lab coat he wore over his uniform. Both hands reached up to slide the goggles off his nose and up onto his wrinkled forehead, pushing up the tufts of white hair that remained on his balding scalp. Two small, squinting eyes held Cadet Ril’s gaze as Garth extended a hand. “Lieutenant Garth,” he said in way of greeting. If accepted, Garth’s grip would be rather strong, perhaps even uncomfortably so.

Ril accepted the outstretched hand preparing himself for a strong grip that he knew would be coming and he took the squeeze in his stride and shook. “It is good to meet you Lieutenant, I have been looking forward to my first posting for several months now and have been preparing for this day for a while now.”

“So if I can ask, what are you working on?”

Cadet Kynelin Ril, Science

The chief science officer turned back to his work suddenly, remembering why he had requested the particle stabilizer in such earnest. A small flame had erupted from a piece of the partially-constructed mechanical tube. He cursed under his breath and fused the wires with the implement. “It’s a portable interstellar telescope. Primarily for use on long-term away missions that don’t have the direct support of a vessel but whose party members want to observe stellar phenomenon from a planet’s surface.”

Garth grunted as he returned to his work, sliding his goggles down to cover his eyes once again with some difficulty. “Computer, execute Lieutenant Junior Grade Garth personal protocol C-1076.”

From overhead, the computer’s much more soothing voice responded, “Activating ‘Appropriate Cadet Greeting’ program.”

From the same speaker as the computer’s voice had come, Garth’s baritone rumbling emerged. “Greetings, cadet. Congratulations, you have arrived on the Challenger for your cadet cruise prior to graduating from Starfleet Academy.” His voice was deadpan and unnatural, having obviously read off of a script for this recording. Garth himself was concentrating on the project in front of him with his back to the cadet as his past-self continued.

“The Challenger is a Discovery-class vessel outfitted with a plethora of specialized labs, including areas designated for the study of astrometrics, geophysics, stellar cartography, biochemisty, bioscience, genetics, microbiology, and botany. The lab you are currently standing in is my lab, do not touch anything unless instructed.” Garth pointed up at the ceiling without looking away from his work as if to emphasize that point from his disembodied voice.

“As a member of the Challenger’s crew, you will be expected to perform the duties of a standard Starfleet officer. This includes assisting with ship-wide crises, collaborating with an interdisciplinary team including medical, engineering, and security officers, and contributing to the mission of the Challenger as stated by its captain.”

An audible sigh echoed from the recording. “And this is the part where I am supposed to remind myself to talk to new cadets specifically about their personal project.” The recording cleared its throat before saying in a more nasally tone, “Using tachyon beams on class B itinerant pulsars is doomed to failure because of instability in their inner cores and the unpredictability of subspace particle exchange.”

Garth looked up and scoffed, startled out of his work by the apparently ludicrous statement. “That’s absur- ah. Urm, yes.” He turned to look at the cadet, tearing himself away from his project. “You will become very well acquainted with one of those labs mentioned earlier during your time here, as you will be required to complete a personal experiment aboard the Challenger under my supervision. Let’s hear your ideas.” Garth crossed his arms and stared expectantly, expression mostly masked by his goggles.

OOC: Because of this post, the thread would become rather long, causing a LOT of scrolling on our part! I have “snipped” the thread, where I have removed the less recent posts that are not directly important to the current action to reduce the clutter of the thread on our screen. You can note that I put a (SNIP) note at the top of the thread. Try snipping the next latest post in this thread when you respond to this post! Also, great job interjecting speak into the breaks between my paragraphs, I was going to suggest that but you beat me to it!
