Joining Starfleet was never something that the Cadet aspired to do. That aspiration was to be joined but even after the lengthy and stressful process of passing through the symbiosis program Kyneln’s rewards was to be added to a waiting list.
So he had time to kill and a graduation from Starfleet would look good on any future applications to scientific institutions and anyway, it would be nice to have something to fall back on if he ever changed his mind. These thoughts tumbled through the Cadets mind after boarding while he headed to meet the Chief Science Officer. He walked upright with his boots gleaming and a light smile on his face. He portrayed confidence but on the inside Kyneln felt quite anxious. Starfleet mightn’t have been what he desired above all else, but he was committed to the belief that if you were going to do something, do it right.
After the short walk from the shuttlebay the Cadet found himself in the science area, and outside the door of his boss, at least for the next few months that would be.
“Okay, I’m ready. Let’s make a good impression” he muttered to himself as he tapped the door chime.
- Cadet Kyneln Ril, Science
The doors to the Challenger’s main science lab hissed open automatically as Cadet Ril pressed the chime, apparently requiring no permission to enter.
Although it was located on deck one, the flagship science lab was starkly different from the other areas of the ship’s premiere deck. Whereas the bridge, observation lounge, and captain’s ready room were kept neat and tidy, Garth’s workspace was a scrapyard of miscellaneous metal parts, half-constructed analysis equipment, and seemingly unattended bubbling test tubes and beakers. Walking through the space would require some careful maneuvering as to not knock anything from their precarious perches at the edges of the long, low tables that lined the room.
Garth was hunched over a small contraption in the corner of the congested room. As Cadet Ril entered, Garth snapped his head around to look over his shoulder, revealing the furrowed brow of an aging tellarite man. Garth’s eyes were obscured by thick black goggles that pushed into the wide bridge of his swine-like snout.
“Grab that particle stabilizer and bring it here, quickly!” Garth barked as he turned back to his work, leaving no indication of where the tool he was referring to was located among the mess.

OOC: Welcome aboard Liam! So happy to have you with us! Great first post, and it looks like you’re picking things up quickly with your thread title and use of a character signature! I sent you an email with some additional information, so please let me know if it has not gotten to you! I’m looking forward to writing with you!

The Cadet would enter to find the lab in quite a state. This was nothing like at the academy; there, it was always neat and tidy with academics and students working and testing but always cleaning up after themselves. Kyneln couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow at the messy tellarite man who had barked his request without proper introduction.
“Ah, yes sir…” the cadet replied quickly scanning the room. Hypos no, decoupler no, strange purple liquid no… Kyneln maneuvered carefully around the bench that seemed to hold the biggest assortment of tools and equipment. “Got it” he announced as he picked up the stabiliser out of a small pool of a sticky substance. Wiping it on a nearby cloth he hurried to hand it to Garth.
OOC: Love this paragraph! (Ben)
“Kyneln Ril, Cadet, reporting as ordered Sir” he said introducing himself as he passed on the implement.
Cadet Kyneln Ril, Science
OOC: Thanks man, glad to be here!
Garth turned and swiped the handheld tool from Kyneln’s grasp with a gloved, meaty hand. The scientist paused as if considering returning to his work immediately, but then adjusted himself to squarely face the cadet. The magnifying goggles on his face whirred slightly as the lenses dilated, zooming in on Cadet Ril’s face as Garth stared up at him intently for a few long seconds.
“Ah yes,” Garth grumbled, “Cadet Ril. I read your file this morning. Whoever wrote it included some interesting notes in your psychological profile. I hope those judgements were made at the beginning of your time in San Francisco, not at the end.”
Garth tugged off his gloves and stuffed them into the inside pocket of the black lab coat he wore over his uniform. Both hands reached up to slide the goggles off his nose and up onto his wrinkled forehead, pushing up the tufts of white hair that remained on his balding scalp. Two small, squinting eyes held Cadet Ril’s gaze as Garth extended a hand. “Lieutenant Garth,” he said in way of greeting. If accepted, Garth’s grip would be rather strong, perhaps even uncomfortably so.
